Suspend is a very low power mode. On my IBM560X for example, it can sit in this
state for a week without significant power loss. Suspend is not to be confused
with "standby" which shuts down the disk and screen (if you are lucky) until
some process (like a cron job) comes along and wakes it up. Standby takes
lots of power. Overnight probably would wear the battery down.
Suspend to disk is called "Hibernation." It is slow and useless unless you
are swapping a battery or leaving for more than a week, and want a really
long term storage. You might as well shut the machine off as use Hibernation,
in my experience.
I'm passing this along because I was confused by it when I first encountered
these terms. And because many times these functions dont work even under windows,
adding to the confusion.
