Well I have a Thinkpad as well (390X) that has a Lucent winmodem
in to. I do not know if the 760 has a Lucent winmodem or some
other. I can get the winmodem in my laptop to work with linux
with the kernel module:

I am not using this modem at the moment as I have a real modem on
a Xircom Card Bus card that works just fine from me and I need the
card to connect to a ethernet. But I did try it out and it seemed
to work just fine.
