To throw in my two cents, I have a 360CE (notice the 'E' on the
end). It is a 50MHz 486, 20MB RAM, 500MB HD, so a bit more powerful than
yours, but not a whole lot. I guess the 'E' stands for elite.
Anway, I have Debian 2.2 (potato, frozen) on it with kernel
2.2.14, and running fvwm2 window manager, along with Xemacs, lyx, pine,
links, apache, and msql, all running at the same time and it moves along
acceptably. The more RAM you can jam into it the better. I use mine mainly
for taking notes, reading email, and keeping a few small databases (w/web
interfaces via PHP) up to date (time tracking mainly) while on the go.
Probably the best way to set the machine up is with a light window
manager (doesn't have to be fvwm2, there are others, like twm :), and a
careful selection of packages. Also, if that model has the same graphics
chipset mine has (Western Digital, wd90c30), I have a working XF86Config
for it. If you want it, send me a private email.
Only bad thing I can say about this series of machines is that the
IBM batteries don't last very long, and given how old they are, almost all
IBM batteries are well over their life time. I limped along with what I
could scrap up in terms of used batteries for nearly two years. Then, for
Christmas, I bought myself two new replacement batteries from Battery Tech
(www.batterytech.com) and have never looked back. Each gives me around
three hours of runtime under the above load. Even better than some modern
laptops with Li-Ion batteries. :)
Hope this is of some help to you. TTYL.
