If I were doing this (actually, I used to do this once in a while
until I figured it wasn't actually worth it with LIION batteries), I
would just boot from a floppy.  Use a MSDOS boot floppy or a single
floppy version of Linux (plenty to choose from), or maybe even the
first disk of an install set for some software.

If you have plenty of time on your hands, like if you're going to
start this and then go to bed, you have more options.  If your machine 
has a BIOS password prompt, just stop right there and let it run
itself down.  Since you have Linux, you could also just arrange to sit 
quietly at a LILO menu prompt forever.
