Hello fellow mobile penguins,

I'm new to the list, so if I haven't followed proper netiquette for
announcing software, please send the appropriate clue-by-four my way. :)

I have released a Linux utility to prepare hibernation partitons for use
with laptops and notebooks using Phoenix NoteBIOS. This utility isn't
needed to utilize the APM "Suspend-To-Disk" feature... if you already have
a valid hibernation partition, you should be able to use from any OS that
can handle APM suspends.

However, if one ever upgrades hard drive, memory, or repartitions their
hard drive, they discover that they either have to do without the
suspend-to-disk feature or boot to DOS and use the buggy PHDISK.EXE
program provided with their laptop or directly from Phoenix
Technologies. The problem with this is that PHDISK.EXE will only run under
DOS, and has a number of bugs that can turn useful data on the hard drive
into bit soup.

Now, Linux users are free from this restriction. lphdisk is a Linux
utility that properly prepares these partitions for use. Not only does
this eliminate having to boot to DOS, but my utility does not exhibit some
of the nastier bugs that its DOS counterpart has.

Because Phoenix would not return any email or phone calls, I had to figure
out the format and headers myself. I have tested this on all the laptops I
have access to, and I have begun to receive success stories of other Linux
laptop stories. Theoretically, this should work on any laptop using
Phoenix NoteBIOS. A list of laptops this has been successfully tested on
is available on lphdisk's web page. This list is small, but should expand
rapidly. (Hopefully.)

You may find out more about my utility as well as download it at:

Feedback would be wonderful, whether bad or good. Let me know if you find
this utility useful.

Regards,
Patrick
