I've been running several installations of linux (mklinux, linuxppc,
yellowdog as well as debian) on my macs, and they're all good. Sure they
have their specificities, but the main difference is only the install
method. Both YDL and linuxppc are RedHat based, unlike debian (of
course!) so it's easy to find documentation. I do not have very modern
hardware, though, so I probably won't be of great help if you plan on
installing it on a G4. I know that most problems have been addressed,
you should find a lot of answers in the linuxppc list archives <
http://lists.linuxppc.org/>.
What I strongly would advice you to do is *not* to try and make a linux
only system. It's a real hassle (although doable). Just keep a small mac
partition with just the minimal system (I have a normal one, and I use
MacOnLinux <http://www.ibrium.se/linux/mac_on_linux.html> if I need some
applications I have no equivalent of under Linux), this way you boot,
then choose which OS you'll use (this is using BootX, but you'll find OF
scripts that will let you triple-boot (OS9, OSX, linux) too. Grab the
linuxppc install guide (pdf format, available from their site
<http://www.linuxppc.com>). It's well done and will give you an idea of
what you'll up against when installing the system.
Some urls that you might find useful:
<http://linuxppc.org> (general info, plus links to faq, howtos)
<http://www.members.home.net/njolly/xppc/index.htm> (for instructions
about Xfree86 4)
<http://linuxcare.com.au/paulus/kernels.html> (to get the kernel)
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I might be able to
help (although it's not a promise, but I'll do my best!)
good luck
