Yes, BSD mtree :) I have used mtree on Linux many times. I recall there used to be an old OpenBSD-ported mtree available for SuSE Linux which I used. A few years back, I co-presented at a GSLUG meeting and discussed mtree on Linux (as a tripwire alternative). I just can't find either of these old sources as tarballs. NetBSD uses to host the portable mtree known as mtree-20040722. (I probably have it on one of my powered-down systems here.) The new code is not in a tarball. But you can see at: http://cvsweb.se.netbsd.org/cgi-bin/bsdweb.cgi/pkgsrc/pkgtools/mtree/files/ (notice it has a "configure") If you need a tarball of the portable mtree that is supported on Linux, let me know and I will make it happen.
