Thank you all for your helpful ideas, comments, and suggestions.
Hardware configuration details are at the end.
(from memory)
Installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on new hardware. Updated till system up
to date.
Using Synaptic Package Manager, installed the virtualbox-ose package.
I have since learned that the non OSE version of VirtualBox is reqiured
for USB support. This time around, I followed the directions on the
following page.
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
For USB support, one also needs to be a member of the vboxusers group.
$ sudo adduser $USER vboxusers
I then followed steps 1 through 9 (of section "This works for Karmic
9.10 Host and Windows XP Guest") of the following page.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox/USB
I had troubles actually getting a key to work until I learned that
Windows 7/XP need drivers for each USB device. For flash drives, that
means activating Windows 7/XP. Zemax provides a security key driver that
needs installation (this works even if Windows is not activated). I now
access a the USB key or flash drive by, with the guest running, going to
the VirtualBox Devices Menu > USB devices and selecting the device.
If I see you at the Bellevue Linux Group meeting tonight (downtown
Barnes and Nobles at 7PM), I can tell you more about my adventures.
