We're working to fill a systems engineering position at a top-flight Internet company in Seattle, building systems at massive scale. Summary: The Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, configuration, and administration of production systems in a multi-site production environment. He or she will provide 24x7x365 on-call support for the production Linux environment and related infrastructure such as storage, backup/restore, and software releases. The SE will be involved in high level cross team architectural design discussions, contribute to detailed company wide project planning, and provide leadership for junior members of the online operations staff. Responsibilities: * Designs, implements, and manages complex systems and configurations in a multi-site environment * Participates in the on-call rotation and responds to alerts 24 hours a day * Participates in troubleshooting efforts and implements effective remediation plans * Make a best effort to provide a secure system environment and improve performance * Analyze and report on day to day operations with metrics approved by management * System administration of Linux across test and production environments * Provide disaster recovery, security updates, and performance tuning expertise * Writes scripts for day to day operations * Analyze and recommend purchase of any required equipment * Build scripts to automate common server tasks * Maintain flexibility to assist with special projects, as needed Required Skills/Personal Requirements: * 3+ years of Linux administration * 1+ years of networking/storage experience * Familiarity with monitoring/alerting systems (Nagios/Cacti, Opsview, Zabbix, Sitescope, Openview, etc) * Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of people, such as engineers and non-technical coworkers * A solid understanding of operating system mechanics; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communications, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions), use of performance analysis to tune systems. * Ability to program in Perl, Python, Bash, or C * Self-starter with ability to balance many tasks with changing priorities * Able to analyze different options and make a clear recommendation * Proven ability to handle a wide variety of tasks and successfully prioritize work through multi-tasking * Knowledge of Linux, DNS, SMTP, cfengine * Experience working in a start-up environment preferred * College degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience If you are interested in this job, please submit your RESUME and SALARY requirements to beau[AT]open-source-staffing.com Thank you, Beau J.
