Ubuntu 10.04 ships with a video editor called "Pitivi", as a
competitor to i-Movie.
I am sorely disappointed in Pitivi. I haven't played with it very
much, because apparently you can't do simple things like add titles,
cross-fades, or any other basic transitions besides a hard cut. From
the forums I've read, Pitivi has a cool plug-in architecture for all
that stuff, but nobody's written the plug-ins yet.
I am also interested in video editing for Linux... but all my pro
friends use Final Cut Pro on the Mac.

Cinelerra is pretty powerful (so much so that I'm still figuring it out).
Comes in two versions, one from the company that created it, one from the
open source community; both are free.

If you try this, I'd be interested in hearing how it goes for you.
