I'm running SuSE 11.3 and having a problem with the video display,
specifically when using the digital interfaces (i.e. DVI or HDMI, but not
on the analog VGA).

I'm currently running dual-headed (1 VGA, 1 DVI), and most of the time the
display work fine. But repeatably I can get the monitor flickering /
blacking out, some odd pixelation artifacts, and general mis-behavior which
looks like the monitor is not sync-ing properly. I did see this bad
behavior when running single headed as well.

What is interesting is that this behavior seems to be triggered by what app
is being displayed on the screen at the time. When running Chrome browser
or Firefox, the display gets messed up when these programs display their
first screen (e.g. Chrome's "Apps, Most Visited, and Recently Closed"
screen), or if I maximize the Chrome browser, but only until I minimize the
window or click on a link to render a website in the main window.

I had the problem initially with the open source video driver that came
with SuSE, and the problem didn't go away when I switched to the
proprietary ATI fglrx driver. I've seen this behavior with 4 different
monitors. So it seems unlikely to be a driver, monitor, or cable issue.
Problem with the controller card itself, maybe?

The hardware is:

$ lspci | grep ATI
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD
4200]

Any ideas appreciated,
