Are you referring to a specific function like v4l2_imgbus_bytes_per_line
or to the whole v4l2-imagebus.c? The whole file and the
v4l2_imgbus_get_fmtdesc() function must be available to all drivers, not
just to soc-camera, if we want to use {enum,g,s,try}_imgbus_fmt API in
other drivers too, and we do want to use them, if we want to re-use client
drivers.

As for this specific function, it is not very generic yet, that's right.
But I expect it to become more generic as more users and use-cases appear.

Well, you mean there are many host-client pairs, that both have only one
setting and cannot be reused in other more generic combinations? Only for
such devices such a fixed format might make sense, yes. It might also be
useful for cases where we actually have no idea what format data is being
transferred over the bus. Is this what you mean? For such cases yes, we
might reserve one fixed format.

Ok.

It might well be not the best namespace choice. But just "bus" OTOH seems
way too generic to me. Maybe some (multi)mediabus? Or is even that too
generic? It certainly depends on the scope which we foresee for this API.

> Or is this just me?

So, here you propose image-bus to be used globally... Sorry, so, shall it
stay internal to soc-camera or shall it become global?

A few of them are, yes, some might not actually be used yes, but have been
added for completenes. We can have a better look at them and maybe throw a
couple of them away, yes.

Document - yes. But, please, under linux/Documentation/video4linux/.

Hm, not sure. Consider a simple scenario: user issues S_FMT. Host driver
cannot handle that pixel-format in a "special" way, so, it goes for
"pass-through," so it has to find an enum v4l2_imgbus_pixelcode value,
from which it can generate the requested pixel-format _and_ colorspace. To
do that it scans the internal pixel/data format translation table to look
for the specific pixel-format and colorspace value, and issues
s_imgbus_fmt to the client with the respective pixelcode.

Of course, this could ylso be done differently. In fact, I just do not
know what client drivers know about colorspaces. Are they fixed per data
format, and thus also uniquely defined by the latter? If so, no
client-visible struct needs it. If some pixelcodes can exist with
different colorspaces, then yes, we might want to pass the colorspace with
s_imgbus_fmt in struct v4l2_imgbus_framefmt instead of allocating separate
pixelcodes for them.

I know it is similar, but I would prefer to have a different struct to
avoid confusion and let the compiler do typechecking. I can well imagine,
if we re-use the same struct, some drivers will forget to convert between
pixel and data formats.

This can be done, yes. It would simplify the code by removing one line
from each affected function like

        struct v4l2_pix_format *pix = &f->fmt.pix;

but it would negatively affect uniformity with the user-facing API, IMHO.
In any case we want to eventually remove those *_fmt methods from subdev
and replace them with respective *_imgbus_fmt counterparts (renaming them
at the same time), don't we?

soc-camera has been using static format lists all the time and we haven't
seen a need for dynamic format lists yet. And no, I so far cannot imagine
a need for them. Even if some formats may or may not be available
depending on some run-time conditions, we can always just create a
complete list and add a "available" or "enabled" field to the format.
