RH5.0 ships with the old version of ncurses. My disk has v1.9.9e.
The failed dependency is telling you, it needs version 4.0 or newer.
You can get the RPMs from the redhat site or any of the mirrors.

Sam,
Thanks for your thoughts but the example print file was email printed from
Netscape's Communicator 4.5. The lines in question are only printed after
the print job finishes. I don't think they are part of the print job but
maybe some status info from ghostscript? The print job does not do a form
feed after the lines in question and that throws off the printer
alignment. That is why I don't think they are part of the original print
job/ postscript file.

Subject: PPP Kernel support
Hello,
I looked if I had support for PPP with # dmesg | less
And it turned out I didn't, som my manual (teach yourself linux in three
weeks..) said
I had to recompile the kernel. So I copied the files
kernel-source-2.0.36-07.i386.rpm
kernel-headers-2.0.36-07.i386.rpm
as well as
ncurses-devel-4.2-10.i386.rpm and
ncurses--4.2-10.i386.rpm
to the /usr/src/linux library.
But then when I tried to write # make mrproper, I got something like
bach command not found
The same when I tried #make menuconfig.
Would really appreciate any help with this! I'm a beginner with Linux,
and I would love to be able
to use it with the Internet. (I've worked a lot professionally with DOS
and Windows).
Thank you in advance,

a hardlink is simply a directory entry, i.e., a slot in a directory
with a filename and an inode number. this provides a mechanism to
translate user names (the filename) into something the kernel
filesystem understands (the inode). since very few hooks into the
inode system are exported by the kernel api, you are basically forced
into using the ascii filename system.
every file needs at least one hardlink to be accessible from
userspace. this what the hardlink is for - to provide access to a
file from a user program.
nothing prevents having multiple hardlinks (ie multiple slots in one
or more directories pointing to the same file/inode). ln is a tool to
add more directory entries to the same inode.
multiple hardlinks are common. look at a directory. it has a link
from its parent, one from itself (via .) and one from each of its
subdirectories (via ..). ls -l shows the number of links as one of
its fields.
the inode itself keeps track of the number of hardlink so that the
kernel/filesystem can garbage collect the formerly used diskspace when
nothing refers to it anymore. adding a link increments the reference
count. deleting (via rm(1) or unlink(2)) decrements the reference
count. the file is not reaped until the reference count reaches zero.

This works for me with Red Hat 5.2:
cd /etc/rc.d/rc3.d
ln -s ../init.d/dbora S99dbora
cd /etc/rc.d/rc6.d
ln -s ../init.d/dbora K10dbora
I also link K10dbora to dbora at run levels 0, 1,
and 2 to be on the safe side.
If you don't see "dbora stop" invoked at run level
6 (when you shutdown or reboot), take a look at
/etc/rc.d/rc.

giving yourself superuser rights in linuxconf only allows you to perform
superuser actions through linuxconf, it does not give you full superuser
priveleges.

the devices files all live in /dev/ the standard IDE devices are called
/dev/hdX, where X indicates which drive (a == primary master, b == primary
slave, c == secondary master, d == secondary slave, etc). referencing a
partition is done by adding a number. so the second partition on the
primary slave would be /dev/hdc2
so, find the device for your cdrom (often there's a symlink from /dev/cdrom
to the real device) and give the standard user group full read permission
to it with the command
chgrp users /dev/cdrom
chmod g+r /dev/cdrom
man chgrp, chmod for more info.

2.2.0pre4 == pre kernel == it's not the final 2.2.0 release. even after
2.2.0 proper is released there will probably be a few maintainence releases
2.2.of 2.2.X before work starts on 2.3 full swing.

Hi folks.
I recently installed communicator 4.5 on Solaris 2.5.1 and everything seems to
work ok apart from the fact that my delete button on the mail app is disabled.
I'm using IMAP. If I Edit my incoming mail server Properties through:
Edit->Preferences->Mail&Newsgroups->Mail Servers
And in the IMAP Tab select either:
Mark as deleted
or
Remove immediately
The delete button works and a red cross appears on the deleted email when it
gets deleted. When I choose to Compact the folder that the deleted messages
are in they promptly disappear.
However,
if I select the 'Move it to the Trash folder' option my delete button gets
disabled.
Any ideas what's causing this?
Additionally, I also installed the Linux version on my PC at home and
although networking works fine on my machine Netscape 4.5 is somehow unable
to resolv host names. I know that my machine is fine because I tried Netscape
4.0.5 and Lynx and they both work without any problems.
Thanks for any replies.

All,
Whewwww!
At last my Epson stylus 600 is now working with my
Linux Mandrake 5.2. A combination of ideas I gathered
from previous posts of these few good men - Bob Tennent,
Michael Saletnik and a very good page of Zack Williams
about uniprint drivers, all made it possibe. Now I can print
my printer at it's maximum resolution and the result is quite
impressive. Only that the print looks like a bit darker on jpg's.
Anyhow I'm trying to do some fine tunings, All hints would
be most welcome. Before I forget my sincerest thanks to these
gentlemen I have mentioned earlier.
Also another question? Why is it that if I use the graphical
login KDM or XDM I can't get an accurate info when I typed
the last command. However if I don't use it and instead just use
the normal console login, the information of who was last logged
in is properly recorded. Is this a bug on graphical logins? If not
is there a workaround on this?
I can only compare because at work I'm using HP-UX and it's
own implementation of XDM which is called Vuelogin (HPVUE)
and typing last -R would give me a correct output whereas
Linux's XDM or KDE's KDM would miss it and outputs only
reboot system boot
I have tried to connect a terminal to the serial port and last command
could see it but on the main machine even if i tried logging in on
another account still last is missing it. Any ideas?
TIA
Bud
