Sounds like a bad print command in the print form. Probably not using "%s".
Try something like "lpr %s".

Another option is to use the option umask=0 in mount:
like:
mount -t vfat -o umask=0 /dev/hda2 /C
or just put umask =0 in your fstab

Put the cdrom in /etc/fstab:
/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 ro,user,unhide
then: mkdir /cdrom
then all you have to do is:
'mount /cdrom' and 'umount /cdrom'
Nothing hard about that.
you can even write a little script for each one of these if that's
too much typing for you. Name 'em cdin and cdout or even ci and co
or just m and u.
then all you would have to do is type m to mount and u to umount.
That's less keystrokes than is needed to access the cdrom under dos.
Use your imagination.
>Most users probably agree that that's a whole bunch of extra effort.

It's not. There is just a larger learning curve for Linux, but once you get
the hang of it, it's a lot nicer to use than winnders.
You can do damned near anything you want in Linux, it's just a matter of
knowing the OS.

I'm running Fetchmail 4.3.9 on a Debian 2.0.2 system (2.0.36
kernel). I have it running in daemon mode polling every 15 minutes
(set daemon 900 in my .fetchmailrc file). It's started by root at
system startup time.
Fetchmail runs fine for a few days, and then stops. The fetchmail
process is still there, but it never fetches any more mail. It won't
fetch any more mail even if I wake it up by running 'fetchmail' on the
command line.
If I kill it (fetchmail --quit) and restart it, it will immediately
fetch a bunch of waiting mail. It will then continue to work for a few
more days and then stop working again.
Has anyone seen this problem? Is there a fix?

Hi
I am try to configure a laser printer (Canon LBP-8MarkIIIR) to work under
Redhat 5.1. I used Print Tool under XWindows to add the printer. It seems
to print plain text and graphics okay from my Windows 95 computers, however
when I print from Linux the text comes out in landscape orientation instead
of portrait. How do I change the orientation in Linux?
Also when I try to print a postscript document the printer beeps a number of
times and garbage gets printed out. The printer is not a postscript printer
but I thought that Linux could change postscript to normal printer language
so that it could be printed on a non postscript printer. How can I set it
up?

D'oh.
a) Probably you had a VAX (turned out to be right).
b) There were DEC Unices (i.e. modified and sold by DEC) but I never heard
about one that would go back to '79.
c) I was (and still am) curious on that point.

*Sure* you can. You couldn't run 3BSD (heck, 4.2BSD) on anything else,
IIRC.

If it was BSD it was *the* UNIX. AT&T line began its degradation about
that time. OK, it was before Missed'em'Five, indeed, but...

I use Shaw@Home. I am also using RedHat 5.2. You will need dhcpcd-0.70,
fortunately I think that RedHat 5.2 comes with this. Edit the file
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup and change the line
/sbin/dhcpcd -c /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdhcpc-done ${DEVICE}
to
/sbin/dhcpcd -h 'CRxxxxxx-A' -c /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdhcpc-done
${DEVICE}
You can then either reboot or type in the new line in an xterm. Everything
should work just fine then, mail, newsgroups, the @Home Site, the rest of the
internet.

Not sure what you are saying here. By the way, I didn't mean to imply that
the Unix BELONGED to DEC. Or even that they delivered the machine with Unix
installed. I can't say for sure but I think it was BSD. WTF, I was only a
freshman and it was the first 'puter I ever laid eyes on. Purdue retired the
last of those machines (11/780s) a few years back. And just because DEC

I'm a C/Unix programmer, and I need to learn SQL. It would also be good

intimidated
at the thought of being my own database administrator. What would you

As an alternative there's a small freeware called xpdf that's fine for browsing
pdf files(and converting to other formats like PostScript) avail. You could
set it up as a helper app. I think it's only about 300K for the browser. If you
use a search engine you should find it quite easilly(sorry not in Linux now so
I don't have the URL)

Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 17:56:48 -0800
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Greetings:
I am preparing to install linux on the second drive of my NT 4 system.
I'd like to clarify a few points before I proceed.
1) In several manuals I have read, I have come across advice to set up
indiv partitions and filesystems for seperate directories (i.e. one for
/ seperate one for /usr and maybe for /tmp....so on and so forth).
Little else is said. Can someone please either provide a more robust
explanation or point me to where to find more expanded info on this. How
much space should be allocated for the base OS itself? Which filesystems
should be seperated out? Why? (One guide said: "It'll make things easier
when you upgrade." Nothing more)
2) I've seen conflicting reports as to the best way to have Linux and NT
co-exist in terms of intial boot-up. Some say use LILO others say stick
with the NT boot-up system. Any advice from anyone who DOES have both
these systems in a config similar to what I am attempting? How should I
modify either LILO or NT to provide the correct boot options?
Your assistance is appreciated!
(PS: I am installing SuSe 5.3. Just today I came across info stating
that there may be a bug in Yast - English version when it comes to disk
partitioning. Anyone know anything more about this? Thanx!)

Quick question. It seems that so many programs now are using GTK+
1.1.x However, I know that GIMP won't run using the 1.1 libraries. Is
there any simple way to have both my gtk+-1.0.6-3 rpm file and the
latest gtk+-1.1.2 rpm installed? I already tried to install the
earliest gtk+1.1 and then GIMP wouldn't run. Can I simply do a "rpm

both installed?
Thanks.

I get when I run startx is either a graphic screen that is all jumbled
