It has not gone and changed its meaning when that meaning is taken from
the general English et al lexicon. However, writing frequently
encompasses more than pure English. To wit: suppose (in a contrived
yet nonetheless demonstrative example) that you wish to describe a
quandary which a man named "Ed" faced whilst using an editor program
called "ed".

So. You begin by writing, "Ed has a problem." But wait! Does Ed have
a problem, or does ed? Should we consult a psychiatrist, or a debugger?
Suddenly, you've lost information by way of initial capitalisation! The
reader (who may not be familiar with the subject) must now attempt to
discover your meaning through context. This is a Bad Thing.

This becomes especially obvious when one is writing, for instance, a
text (using a natural language) which discusses something (such as any
of a number of programming languages) which have a case-sensitive
lexicon.

How do I create a boot disk for installing and upgrading RedHat 5.2? The

Subject: Corrupt RPM?
Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 16:20:13 -0500

I've been tried to install the RPM for Window Maker 0.50.2. I got the
following message:

[root@riemann download]# rpm -Uvh WindowMaker-0.50.2-2.i386.rpm
failed dependencies:
        libungif.so.4 is needed by WindowMaker-0.50.2-2

So I installed the RPM for libungif-4.0-1, which includes
libungif.so.4, but I continued getting the same failed dependency
message when trying to install Window Maker. So I tried to "verify" the
RPM and got this:

[root@riemann download]# rpm -V libungif-4.0-1
.M...... /usr/lib/libungif.so.4

This, according to the rpm man page, indicates there is a problem with
the "mode" of the file, which includes permissions. The installed file
is actually a symbolic link and has the following permissions:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Jan 18 17:20
/usr/lib/libungif.so.4 -> libungif.so.4.0.0

Querying the RPM for the file's info gives

[root@riemann download]# rpm -ql --dump libungif-4.0-1
...
/usr/lib/libungif.so.4 17 913958298 0120644 root root 0 0 0
libungif.so.4.0.0

I've tried to play around with the file's permissions to see if the
error goes away, but nothing has worked so far. Anyone know how I can
fix this?

Thanks,
Thomas

Hallo,

wenn ich mein Tango 2000 unter Linux betreiben mchte, so spreche ich es wie

Ich setze unter KDE das Progi kppp ein.
Folgende Meldungen kommen dabei beim Einwhlen:

ATZ

ATDT xxxxxxxxx
CONNECT 64000/ISDN/HDLCP

dann nach einer Weile:

"MELDE AM NETZWERK AN..."

und nach ca. 15 sec.

"The pppd daemon died unexpectedly!"

Die Benutzerrechte sind auf root eingestellt! Und ich whle mich als root

Wenn jemand auch mit einem externen ISDN-Adapter sich ins Internet einwhlt,

Most likely hda2 is an extended partition, which contains
two logical partitions (hda5 and hda6).

Also - I believe the LILO limit is that the entire kernel
must be below cylinder 1024. You might want to see if you
can make hda3 / and hda5 /usr/local. (I know, it might mean
a lot of work, but it might mean that LILO will work...)

Good luck

Subject: What is insmod telling me here?
Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 10:27:03 -0600
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm trying to install the ppa driver for the Zip Drive on Linux 2.0.36;
I've done this a dozen times before in the past on this machine with
Slackware 3.3 and prior.

However, after a fresh install to Linux 2.0.35, and downloading the new
2.0.36 kernel, I can't get ppa to install. I don't understand what it's
telling me. Here's the output after I try to install the module:

# insmod ppa
/lib/modules/2.0.36/scsi/ppa.o: unresolved symbol
scsi_unregister_module_Rd913b8f0
/lib/modules/2.0.36/scsi/ppa.o: unresolved symbol
scsi_register_module_R8eff1010
/lib/modules/2.0.36/scsi/ppa.o: unresolved symbol scsi_register_R0f08cac5

Then I wondered if maybe I have something not set up right. So I tried
an experiment. I did a # lsmod it showed me that I had slip, ppp, and
one other module installed and working just fine. So, I decided I'd
remove a loaded module and reload it for just for kicks.

# rmmod ppp worked just great. # lsmod shows it's gone. Now the re-add:

# insmod ppp
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/ppp.o: unresolved symbol slhc_free_R3787e5b9
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/ppp.o: unresolved symbol slhc_remember_Rbc0f8a5e
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/ppp.o: unresolved symbol slhc_toss_R89ec95b6
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/ppp.o: unresolved symbol slhc_uncompress_Ra2ca7e04
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/ppp.o: unresolved symbol slhc_compress_R5d6838a9
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/ppp.o: unresolved symbol slhc_init_R20741a64

...and I'm stumped. So now I check to see how rc.modules does it. It
uses modprobe. Guess what, # /sbin/modprobe ppp works like a champ.
Where as # /sbin/modprobe ppa reports:
/lib/modules/2.0.36/misc/ppa.o: couldn't find the kernel version the module
was
compiled for

1) What's the difference between insmod and modprobe?
2) Why does insmod look in .../scsi and modprobe look in .../misc?
3) What's insmod and modprobe telling me I need to do? I'm running out
of ideas on different ways to rebuild the kernel.

-Walt Stoneburner, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Here's exactly how I followed the FAQ to get ppa support in the past, and
what I did this time that's causing the errors.

Configure the kernel:
     cd /usr/src/linux
     make menuconfig
     scsi support = Y
     scsi disk support = Y
Iomega zip support as a module
printer support also as a module
     save it and exit
     make dep
     make clean
     make zImage
     make modules
     make mdoules_install
...moved zImage to root, did the lilo.conf thing, ran lilo.
     ...rebooted, definately using new kernel.
(all of the above worked like it should)

Now to use the drive:
     load the module insmod ppa
build a mounting point. mkdir /zip
insert a preformatted windoze type disk into the drive.
mount the disk. mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /zip
use any standard file commands as in l /zip, ls /zip, df, cp,
when you are finished umount /zip

Emacs is actually very modular. Look at where all the functionality is

As have I, which is why I was quite glad to discover the shift-key
trick. Unfortunately, I am under the impression that this is as
seamless as it gets without code modifications.

| So I noticed. Strangely enough you still employ capital letters for
| the words "I" and "Emacs". Or rather Emacs does, I guess :-)

case is an important property of a word. randomly capitalizing words
just because they happen to start sentences destroys valuable information
about that word. I therefore maintain the case properties of a word
regardless of its position in the sentence.
