Actually, I finally figured out what was going wrong. If you just add
allow-changing-from to the feature-list: in the .pinerc in ~ it allows me to
do it also. You can't adjust that feature in the Config, it has to be done
manually in the .pinerc.

Hy,

if you can print with gs or from ghostview or some other programs, you have to
change the parameters and the connection of the generic printer in StarOffice, f.i.
to = lp -d lp.

Subject: Linux RedHat 5.2 or SuSE 5.3 ?
Date: 22 Jan 1999 09:58:21 GMT

I'm a novice with Linux and I'd like to install it on my PC.
I found SuSE 5.3 GPL on 1 CD for 2.75 euros and RedHat 5.2 GPL on 2 CD for 5.35
euros. (I've not enough money to buy an official version, but I suppose there i
s not significant differences between GPL and official version).

I have a Pentium 100 and my graphic card is a SiS 5597/8. I have heard that the
support for this graphic chip is not included in the RH version, but there is a
package to support it.
Moreover, I'd like to install it from my hard-disk (I have no CD-ROM drive, and
a friend can copy the CD-ROM on my hard disk in a FAT partition)

Which one is the best distribution to begin with Linux ?

Thanks

If you don't mind used equipment, I'd think that an HP DeskJet 1200CM (?)
wouldn't be too expensive. They're kinda bulky, though, and the print
quality isn't the absolute best you can get now, but it should still be
pretty decent (they were damn good 4 years ago :-) ).

If you're interested in new equipment, the Lexmark Optra Color 40 is selling
at buy.com for about $350 (the network-ready Optra Color 40N is about $590).
It does up to 8 ppm (black) and up to 600x600 dpi. Unlike Lexmark's Color
Jetprinter line (a bunch of Windows printers), this one groks PCL and
PostScript Level 2. It looks like it ought to be a pretty decent printer,
and it doesn't break the bank like the other PostScript-compatible inkjet
(or laser, for that matter) printers I've seen. (Manufacturer's info is at
http://www.lexmark.com/printers/OptraColor/OptraColor40.html.  No, I don't
work for either of these companies; it's just some info I found when I was
fooling around one day. I was kinda surprised just to find that Lexmark
actually makes inkjet printers that aren't WinPrinters. I was even more
surprised to find that they even went so far as to include PostScript
support.)

Dockable apps can be strange sometimes. I found that if one is giving me
similar problems I just have to kill it from the command line. Then, I
remove the app's icon from the dock.

Are there any benchmarks out there for using the patch? I applied the
patch and haven't seen a marked improvement - not that I was expecting a
huge increase.

Prepare yourself for an exciting journey as you explore DOSEMU.

> where in the heck can you put a DOS application so that you can run it in
> the emulator box ?

Well, you _could_ put them under your home directory. However, if you
already have a DOS drive out there, just use it under DOSEMU. Here is my
current configuration for DOSEMU:

[config.sys]
device=c:\emufs.sys /mnt/dos
device=c:\ems.sys
devicehigh=c:\cdrom.sys
devicehigh=c:\ansi.sys
dos=high,umb
shell=d:\4dos\4dos.com
[end config.sys]

Because of my use of emufs.sys I can simply type "D:" and am magically
transported to my DOS drive. Then, just start seeing what programs will
actually work. BTW, make sure you have /etc/dosemu.conf and
/etc/dosusers.conf setup properly.

On a related note, I still done't have my PS/2 mouse working under
DOSEMU. I keep getting the message "ERROR! Internal driver option not
set, enable internal driver in /etc/dosemu.conf." Now, the relavent
portions of my dosemu.conf that I have set are the following:

$_mouse = "ps2"
$_mouse_dev = "/dev/mouse"
$_mouse_flags = "emuate3buttons"
$_mouse_baud = (0)

What is emumouse.exe talking about? Also, if I attempt to use Logitech's
driver, it reports that it cannot find the mouse, even if I supply the
PS2 port setting. Any ideas anyone?

Subject: Re: sharing netscape 4.5 files between linux and nt4 - almost there,
Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 08:33:04 +0000

Well, I have now using the same mail folder between ns4.5 linux and nt. Instead of
linking my mail directory to the ns mail directory in nt:

cd ~/.netscape
mv mail mail.old
ln -s "/mnt/hda5/Program Files/Netscape/Users/jmsalvo/Mail" mail

I have to link each file:

cd ~/.netscape/mail
mv <folder> <folder>.old
ln -s "/mnt/hda5/Program Files/Netscape/Users/jmsalvo/Mail/<nsnt_folder>" <folder>

(where <folder> are Inbox, Trash, Templates, Drafts, .....)

I initially also linked each .<folder>.summary to its corresponding file in ns4.5
nt, but after running ns4.5 linux, ns deleted the link and recreated the file,
just like the .rc files for the newsgroup servers.

I did not have a link to the .snm file, as ns4.5 linux doesn't seem to use this.
ns linux interprets all files under your mail direcotory as mail folders (except
for hidden files of course like the .summary files).

Hmmm... So what happens when I run ns linux if a new message is placed on one
these folders, thereby not updating the .snm file? Since .snm files are indexes,
I guess ns would get confused and one of the files get corrupted. However, ns nt
still sees the entries as well.

Anyway, I guess nobody is interested and reading all of this, as no one has
replied to this thread.

I'd probably use CPIO to do the job, but close enough...

It would indeed prove necessary to have *some* "hackery" to deal with the
legacy filesystem. I would suggest that it's far less of a big deal to
handle "ext3fs is 2038 compliant, and ext2fs isn't" than it is to hack on
backdating things, which is something that will *never* leave you alone.

If you take the ext2fs data and move it to ext3fs, then the job is done, and
so long as you don't create any "old" fses, you never need worry again.

Having explicit hacks are forever...

>The Y2K debacle is the precedent for Y2038.

Nope.

The Y2K debacle is a clear example of how thoughtless system design gets
people in trouble in arbitrarily stupid ways.

That's *not* the case with the UNIX 2038 problem. It was anticipated long
ago, and there *are* remediation methods that aren't anywhere *near* as
horrible as what the Y2K folks are working with.

One of these days I'm gonna try it. In the meantime if anyone tries

Subject: Running Star Office under Redhat 5.1 with ViRGE
Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 08:23:08 GMT

  Just wanted to thank everyone who helped get this working, and I thought I'd
post what my final solution was.

1) Install glibc from RPMs off redhat's ftp. (Much easier then trying to
figure out how to get SO's stuff working)

2) From another computer (that doesn't use ViRGE) run an XServer and then log
into my machine and install SO50 on my machine.

3) Apply the patch from StarOffice's website for the ViRGE chip.

Now it runs perfectly!
