Saying something is 'part of the OS' and having it run at the kernel's CPU
privelage level are two very different things. Are you suggesting that
downloaded ActiveX components run at level 0 (most privelaged) rather than
level 3 (least privelaged)?

I'm still leaning towards this 'unique identifier' thing to be nothing new
at all, that the PIII merely brought the issue to the attention of the
public.

Subject: mgetty fax receive problem
Newsgroups: comp.os.linux.misc
Organization:
Summary:
Keywords:

Well, I've been messing around with mgetty+sendfax and I've got the fax
spooling working (it should be fairly easy to make an /etc/printcap
script -- something to work on later)..

However, I haven't been able to get the fax receive part working at
all. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated :).

System info:

Linux (Debian) kernel 2.2.2 on an i586
   mgetty: experimental test release 1.1.14-Apr02
Hayes Accura 33.6 (Class 2.0 compliant)

I'm able to dial into the modem line with another modem and connects to
a login prompt happily. But a fax connection never resolves.

The modem part of my /etc/inittab is:

   # Example how to put a getty on a modem line.
   #
   # T3:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -x0 -s 57600 ttyS0
   T3:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -x5 -C c2.0 -s 57600 ttyS0

The uncommented parts of my /etc/mgetty/mgetty.config are:

   debug 4
   fax-id
   speed 38400
   fax-owner root
   fax-group uucp
   fax-mode 0640
   port ttyS0
   speed 38400

My /etc/mgetty/dialin.config doesn't have anything uncommented (and so
should have the implicit allow all, if the documentation is right).

I've included the log file below.

Hello, dear computer witches!!!

I'm attending an English course and due to pass it I have to make a poll
(of nothing) and refer my "results" afterwards to the other students.

Because our English teacher is an American and I'm sure that he is quite
unaware about Linux operating system. I think that it will be my turn to
educate him a little bit. But I will need your help to make my poll
homework.

So let me know: what is annoying You mostly in Windows 95 or relative
operating _interface_?

Rate 1-10:

a) Linux
b) Dos
c) Win3.*
d) win95
o) win98

I have my class in 13.00 (CET) - eastern time zone in USA is about 8
hours ahead. So please do not participate to my poll after that.

I appreciate all the answers,

Jussi Makinen (directly [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Stephen Taylor has written a driver that runs the 5700 in bw only.
See http://www.ultranet.com/~setaylor/papers.htm

If this turns out to work for any other Lexmark printers, please let
me know or update http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi

For what definition of functional? For the moment, I'll assume
functional means that it doesn't prevent the program from running in a
normal manner. IMO, from the legal viewpoint, the clone library should
not need to implement all (or any) of the features of the GPL'd original.
It just needs to implement the API in such a way that the program
remains functional.

BTW, who (or what) decided that the library must be "functional" in
order for it to count as an alternative to the GPL'd library? I see
no mention of this in neither the GPL nor copyright law's definition of
"derivative work".

I still fail to see how the existence or non-existence of a third
party's library C determines whether or not product A is a derived work
of product B if A & B are linked dynamically (where lib B and lib C share
a common API).

Well I suspect you do not want your tmp directory getting all cluttered
up with junk.

Yur logs will eventually take up your whole / directory if you do not

You should. It is very handy. Try it. (Ie, when you want to find a file,
instead of
find / -name wormgear -ls
just do
locate wormgear.

Relative newbie here, but I'm betting it's because your /etc/printcap talks
about your network hp printer, but lpr expects to send output to printer 'lp' by
default. In your /etc/printcap, prepend 'lp|' to the beginning of the first line
for the entry of your target printer?

Something else occurs to me -- you should be able to do 'lpr -Php8000n
some.test.file' to actually route something to the printer to make sure you have
everything else correctly set up -- the '-P' option specifies that you want to
use a non-default printer queue.

Again, remember, I'm new at this, but this is what I seem to recall reading...

I would worry. Either a bad breakin or your disk is failing.

Have you applied the patches. HIGHLY advisable. HIGHLY.
( get them from redhat.com in updates. Lots of security updates.)

You misunderstand those of us who hate Microsoft. It is not just a case of I like
Linux, thus I dislike winblows. There is more to it than that. This is something
about a bully trying to control a market.

The good ole American dream is killed off when no matter how hard you work some
asshole is going to keep you from making it as good as you should because you happen
to go in something that they want to be the only ones in.
Borland, Digital Research, Sun, Netscape, the makers of the original Internet Explorer
to name a few.

The fact that winblows is a piece of shit is just icing on the cake in our flames.

I use this garbage to earn a living so I know what I'm talking about.

At home I use OS/2 and Linux.

I do not know of any way of accidentally "destroying your system" (Ie
destroying harware as well as installed software)
doing rm -f -r /
will do it, but that will just wipe all of your files. With a modicum of
care you are not even going to do that.

Yes, that is what fsck is all about. It checks the disk to find what got
corrupted and fixes it. Of course any stuff which was not actually
written to disk cannot be refound. Will fsck fix all problems? No. Can
you if you really try make the system hard to fix, yes. But you have to
try hard. (I would worry more about someone dropping a rock on your
computer)

Linux is far far safe than Windows. The users are limited in what damage
they can do by the permissions. On Windows any user can in general do
arbitrary damage.

>My decision will depend on the answers I get from you experts.

>Another way to put is: Is Linux ready for the consumer?

Depends on what the consumer wants. For what you want, yes. For all
consumers, no. It is not (although it can be made) a "turnkey" system.
But then neither is Win. Only there it is the computer shop that tears
out their hair.

I think I'll skip Distributor Certification.

I already have a Dr. GUI Tee Shirt and I'm working on a Linux Straight
Jacket. If you can get a clean compile and get 'something' ... anything ...
to run ... just visit a mental health clinic, get stamped 'certifiably
insane', and the corporate world will accept you with open arms. Trust me.

Don't compare apples with oranges. K6 is a Pentium equivalent,
K6-II is the PII/Celeron equivalent. K6-III is a PIII
equivalent. K6-II and K6-III are now clocking up to 450Mhz.
If AMD goes away you'll end up paying a hell of a lot of money
for the next processor. Do you really believe that's a good
thing?

Not a flame, I just thought the good folks out there would like
to hear other opinions as well. :-)
