Hi,
I tried to install Debian 2.0 on a compaq with a PS/2 keyboard. Installation
went perfect, but when I tried to boot from a boot disk. The keyboard wasn't
working _at all_ .
Are there special modules to install with a ps2 keyboard ??
The strange thing is that, when installing, the keyboard works fine. I suppose
the bootdisk created at install time contains the same kernel, not ?

Well, the original poster of the dollar price sent their article to
uk.comp.os.linux as well as all the others, so presumably they thought
their article was relevant to that newsgroup.
Followups set.

Subject: Problems booting 2.2.2 with loadlin
Date: 10 Mar 1999 14:31:41 GMT
Here are my symptoms:
1. I compile the kernel from the 2.2.2 source.
2. Copy the new kernel to /win98/linux/vmlinuz since i use loadlin in DOS
to boot my linux box...dont ask why...jus works better for me.
3. reboot my box and come up to the command prompt in dos.
4. change to the linux directory on c:\
5. type linux at the prompt to execute linux.bat
6. the screen goes blank then at the top says "Uncompressing kernel..Ok now
booting linux."
7. and it just sits there....nothing happens at all....i can boot my 2.0.36
with no problem using loadlin...
Any Ideas?

I gather there might be more than one board
called pc100 . The one I have works with Red
Hat 5.2. I am trying slackware now and have't
tried it with it yet,but with Red Hat it worked
fine if you had the "onboard sound chip"
enabled in bios and disabled the pnp. I am not sure that disableing the pnp is
needed but when I did it the audio adapters were listed at the begining of
boot up with IRQ's. Mine worked with DMA 01 DMA 05 and IRQ 05.
Also I did a search for the 577 mother board and found a site with a manual if
you dont have one. Just search for M577 pc100.

Subject: planning linux conversion
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 17:40:12 GMT
Our university has decided to search for a commercial administrive system to
replace our aging and faulty homegrown one. As an IS director trying
desperately to keep his finger on the ever changing pulse of the industry, I
have (for a number of reasons) decided to pursue a solution will run on
Linux. If I can't find one, I know there are several vendors that provide
Unix solutions. I doubt I will choose an NT solution, regardless of the
whizbang feature set of the package that requires it.
However, as a newbie who would like to join the Linux community, there are
some very basic things that I do not know. Does software that runs on Unix
also run on Linux? For instance, one of the vendors that we are looking at
has a system that runs on Oracle/Unix. From my uninformed viewpoint, it
would seem a very difficult proposition to port a complex software package
in its entirety from Unix to Linux. However I suppose in a client/server
environment (as opposed to application server) it might be a different story.
Then there is the question of which Linux pool to dive into. I understand
they are all fed from the same source, but choose I still must. And how does
this choice effect what I would install on a workstation? For instance, do I
increase the learning curve because I am trying to learn a flavor that is
better suited for the desktop at the same time I am learning a flavor that
is better suited as a server?
Thanks for your patience

This has probably been posted 1000's of times before, so apologies to
everyone :-).
Can Linux read/write to a NTFS partion? If so how do I set it up to
do so and do I need any other modules / patches to accomplish this.
I have RH5.0 with Kernal 2.036 (I think).
Sorry if I have wasted anyone / everyones time and thanks for any info

First you must have a properly edited isapnp.conf
file to get the awe32 initialized. There are many
copies floating around to show you what to do,
I can send you a copy if you don't have one.
Second you need to apply the patch to a clean kernel source code.
Do a "make mrproper" in your kernel source directory.
Then unpack the awe patch you got from the above url.
Then run the install script that comes with the patch.
It will find your kernel source code, and patch the sound
files. If it dosn't make sure you have a symbolic link @linux
pointing to your kernel source in /usr/src.
Next you need to recompile your kernel, with sound as
module, and enable low-level drivers for the awe.
You just do the standard kernel compilation.
make dep make clean make zImage make modules make modules_install
Don't forget to run lilo again to install your new kernel .
Then reboot.
To turn sound on "insmod sound"
To turn sound off "rmmod sound"
To check sound " cat /dev/sndstat"
If you want to use fancy soundfont banks, copy
the sfxload utility to somewhere in your path, like /usr/bin.
Then type "sfxload synthgm.sfx" ; which will load the
soundfont bank synthgm.sfx.
You can put this command in your boot.local file to
automatically turn sound on at boot time.
For example, in boot.local put:
insmod sound
sfxload synthgm.sfx

My statement above is a bit confusing. Comes from staying up all night

I have set up micro distributions for embedded controller boards and
hopefully I'll remember everything I included. My directory tree was
something like this:
\---+-- vmlinuz (stripped kernel with no modules)
|
+-- /bin --+
| +- login
| +- sh (symlink to bash, or ash if space is premium)
| +- bash
| +- hostname
| +- ls
| +- rm
| +- cp
| +- mv
+-- sbin --+- swapon
| +- update
+-- etc --+- inittab (you are going to have to write a custom one)
| +- passwd
| +- group
| +- fstab
| +- HOSTNAME
| +-- rc.d -- rc.? (custom files for runlevels in inittab)
+-- dev -- you will have to use MAKEDEV to create tty's and such
| (this is probably why you got the error you did,
| but I could be wrong)
+ -- var -- log (these are directories to serve as place holders
| +- lib pobably not neccessary but can be handy)
| +- lock
| +- lib
+-- root -- .bash_profile (custom for you prompt and such)
I think Thats everything we put in minus a custom application for data
logging, but I have problably forgotten something.

And chews abit of your CPU's resources. Which means that if your CPU
