Hi all,
I need linux to boot up without any user interaction t.i automatic login,
watchdog features with autoreset etc.Does anyone knows which config files to
edit to get this funtionality. Also after login which config file is used
to auto start applications/scripts?

I have RH5.2 installed with the 2.2.3 kernel.

Netscape in its wisdom impliments all of its own resolver and DNS
routines-- it does not use the operating systems subroutines. Thus one
can work and the other not.

Okay, I'll bite.......to have some set of processes run automatically is
one thing - but why would you need to have someone logged in?

Don't change the master and slave settings. If you simply want to change
the boot order, simply switch the order that each boot option appears in
/etc/lilo.conf.

ie.
image=/boot/vmlinuz-x.x.x
    label=linux
    etc...
other=/dev/hdb1
    label=dos
    etc...

to

other=/dev/hdb1
    label=dos
    etc...
image=/boot/vmlinuz-x.x.x
    label=linux
    etc...

All you're doing is changing the default boot option to linux so you can
simply press enter at the LILO: prompt or just wait for the time-out. It
has nothing to do with master/slave settings. That has to do with the
jumper placement on both hard drives. If you're not changing anything
physically, that's all you have to do.

/dev/hda7      /WinNT      ntfs      ro  1    0

Change partition and mount directory to suit yourself,
and don't forget to compile ntfs support into your
kernel (2.2.x). There's also read/write support
available, with warnings.

Perhaps the problem is I know too much. If I knew less about
NT, I wouldn't have picked you up on your factual errors.
Clearly the GUI isn't loaded when no-one's logged on, because
the GUI is Explorer and Explorer isn't loaded.

So this discussion has descended to the level where one has
to argue whether switching the graphics card to a different
mode to display the logon screen has a significant impact on
performance? I'm not going to waste my time arguing whether
the pimple on NT's butt is bigger than the one on Linux's.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to read something formatted
like that??? If you had presented the information in a more readable
style I would be inclined to explain what each part of it means, but
it takes more effort than I'm willing to expend cleaning that up
to make it readable.

Look in /etc/inetd.conf to find your problem.

I have a system which has 2 IDE disks.
On the first disk is linux and Windows NT which both can be booted via
lilo.

On the second disk is Solaris and Windows 98 which can both be booted
via Solaris when this disk is made the master.

Question. Is it possible to get lilo to allow the option to boot any 1
of the 4 different OS's?

Thanks Nick

     It depends on what you're trying to do.

     The BSD-style one that Slackware uses has one master rc file
     that explicitly calls in other rc files to configure various
     subsystems. This has the advantage of being traditional.

     The SysV-style one that Redhat, et alii, use has a collection of rc
     directories that contain rc files that start up (and stop) various
     services, These files are named S<number><name> and
     K<number><name>, and the master rc script walks through them in
     numeric order (via something like for rc in S*; ...) to start or
     kill services. This has the advantage of it being really easy to
     add new services, though it has the disadvantage that you have to
     hand-sort the services so that they won't start before their
     prerequisites.

     There are other schemes that try to get around this disadvantage of
     SysV rc services, though they are pretty much experimental. One
     of these -- the rc scheme that my research distribution Mastodon[1]
     uses has a bunch of rc directories containing rc files, just like
     SysV, but instead of ordering them by name, the rc files call in
     the prerequisites they need (cf: UCSD Pascal `uses' statement) at
     runtime, and remembers the order that each services was started so
     it can shut those services down in order later. This has the
     advantage that you don't need to give them special names, but it
     has the decided disadvantage that it's not traditional and NONE
     of the various Unix howto books and FAQs will help a novice
     system administrator with it. Other people have RC setups that
     are somewhat like this, but using different threading schemes
     and file formats (which I have to be vague about, because it's
     been a while since I've see one of the schemes.)

     If you're planning to build a distribution, consider your audience.
     SysV and BSD-style are probably split 50/50 in influence, but SysV
     is MUCH better laid out and is a lot easier to tweak to fit. If
     your audience is Unix literate, you should choose one of these. If
     your audience is NOT Unix literate, you should also choose one of
     these, because eventually something will go wrong that they'll have
     to poke around in the RC files to fix, and it's much better to give
     them a format that's documented. If, however, you're doing it for
     your convenience or are aiming it at people who don't give a fuck
     about Tradition!, I'd <BLATANT SELF-PROMOTION> suggests the
     Mastodon[1] style because it's about as unlike the traditional Unix
     rc as you can get while still using files </BLATANT SELF-PROMOTION>.

 Hi,
 Yes, When you start the installation proccess, you will get a choice to use
either 'Disk Druid' or the Linux 'version' of fdisk. Either will partition your
drive. Then just check the 'format' option in all the partitions on that drive
when asked before the actual installation starts.

    To make a long story short, I tried switching from KDE to Gnome as a
last-ditch experiment in trying to correct some email and news problems
with Netscape. It actually worked (!), and it turns out that I kind of
like the look (and especially the lighter memory load!) of Gnome a
little better, so I think I'm going to switch over permenantly.

    The only problem is, I haven't been able to get dial-up PPP to work
worth a damn. I'm still using the "kppp" dialer that comes with KDE...
but I can't stand the way that it doesn't dock into the panel the way it
does under KDE. I have tried that "PPP Dialer" that comes with Gnome,
but don't know how to configure it to actually dial (right now when I
click on it, it just sits there). The Gnome documentation that I've
browsed through simply tells me what it is and that it is there...
there's no documentation I've found on how to actually configure it.

    Does anyone know where decent documentation may be found for the
"PPP Dialer" that docks in the Gnome panel?

I'm trying to put Applix on my WindowMaker dock, but it won't quite
take. I'm using the Dockit to generate the parameters, and I get an
icon. However, when I try to launch Applix, the tile just greys out. I
_can_ run applix from the window menus using the supplied applix.wmconf
file.

The application path & arguments values I've tried are 'applix' (which
is in my search path), or /usr/local/bin/applix. Both of these point to
the Applix startup script.

I've noticed that trying to start applix backgrounded from the command
line causes it to hang in the background waiting for tty output. Even
redirecting stdout/stderr doesn't fix this:

[karsten@ali-ca12-44 karsten]$ applix &
[1] 1572

[karsten@ali-ca12-44 karsten]$ jobs
[1]+  Stopped (tty output)    applix

[karsten@ali-ca12-44 karsten]$ fg
applix

Hmm...on a hunch:

[karsten@ali-ca12-44 karsten]$ ( echo " " | applix 1>/dev/null 2>&1 ) &
[1] 1602

....well it works in the shell, but still not from the dock. Dunno....

My problem is simple: I want to install KDE 1.1 on top of Debian 2.1.

Now, the Debian folks have some semi-religious problems with KDE. KDE
is deemed "sufficiently free" in itself, but it depends on Free QT, and
QT is "not quite sufficiently free", something to do with "you can
distribute it but not modify it". And for some reason, this is a
problem with QT but apparently not with a lot of other non-free packages
in Debian's, er, non-free section. So, anyway, they don't diastribute
KDE.

(Although they do have QT 1.40, sitting there in the non-free section...
but I digress.)

So, I got the KDE 1.1 .deb packages from KDE, and started to install
them. But... KDE 1.1 says it needs QT 1.42, and Debian's site only has
1.40. I went to www.troll.no for QT 1.42, but they don't have Linux
packages, just pointers to the various distribution sites.

So... I thought, I'd build my own QT 1.42 .deb package and become a
Debian hero. I got the QT source package from Troll... downloads
beautifully. Start to make it... needs g++. No problem. Off to the
Debian site... got g++, libstdc++, libstdc++-dev. Install the packages:
aarrggghhhh. Dependency deadlock. g++ needs libstdc++-dev and
libstdc++-dev needs g++.

So, I'm stuck. If anyone knows:
- how to get g++ and libstdc++-dev to install on Debian
or better still
- how to install libqt 1.42 on Debian
then I'd be most grateful. In the meantime, I can imagine that Mr.
Gates is not terribly worried about Linux taking over the world any time
soon.

I'm a week late but I followed the link to Daves page because of
Wulff's comments and I agree. Some funny stuff there.

You can't. The kernel permits the execution of setUID shell scripts in
setUID-unaware shells. Use a C-wrapper or a secure shell, like sperl .
Or sudo, which is more secure , anyways.
