I would just ignore example.tex --
it is intended to test sophisticated applications of pdftex,
most of which would be very unlikely to arise in practice.
Assuming you are using latex,
why not just try pdflatex on your file(s),
and see how it goes?
Generally, LaTeX files need few if any changes to work under pdflatex.

I think sndconfig is a Red Hat thing.
My experience when I ran it was that it screwed everything up.
After a bit of diagnosis I discovered that it wrote out an isapnp.conf
file, and the Red Hat startup scripts discovered that file and started
running isapnp on boot-up. Anyway, the pnp configuration wasn't quite
right and both sound and my X configuration broke. Renaming the
isapnp.conf file fixed the problem. I have since upgraded to kernel

Has anyone managed to get Linux up and running on the ProLiant 1850R? I
know it is possible, since Compaq is now shipping these boxes configured
for Linux. The only problem I am having is getting the embedded 10/100
UTP NIC that comes with the box working. Is there a compatible driver
available, or do I need to just purchase another NIC for one of the PCI
slots?
Thanks

I'm trying to find out how to convert from symbolic to numeric permission
values. I worked out how to do it if r, w, x are the symbols but what do
you for s and t values. I'v seen s = 4000 setid 2000 setgid and t = 1000
but don't know how to incorporate these into the overall value.

Almost... But not with the kind of offline processing I was talking about
unless I support it with a root maintained local news spool... Which I
don't want to do on my PC... Pine can access my ISP's NNTP BUT the last
time I tried to use it to access news.ttlc.net for reading it took so
long just fetching newsgroup names that something timed out (what I didn't
find out) but the phone rang while the little spinning <slash dash
backslash pipe> busy marker was still spinning... (and yes I do disable
call waiting with *70 so it wasn't that)
And while I'm reasonably sure I can find something like slrnpull to get
selected articals only into some "folder" that I can then read with pine,
I've yet to find one that I can get working that doesn't require INN or
some such... I only want to download <user> selected messages to <user
owned> mailbox files that a <user level> invocation of pine can delete at
will. While any messaage not deleted by the user needs to stay there
forever... And off-line <sending> of usenet articals is also not supported
by pine, Unless you accept the kludge of postponeing each and every one
untill next time on line then WHILE on-line I must invoke pine, select
compose, confirm that I want to continue a postponed message, select the
said message (one at a time) from the postponed messages. and send it...
At the moment I'm settling for just that very thing. I'm also using trn to
mark threads based on the subject headers, while I'm online, which usualy
takes longer that it does to download all the marked threads. <sigh>
Which go into a "mailbox" file named after the newsgroup it was saved
from, then since $HOME/News[] is one of the folder collections I defined
for pine I can log off my ISP before I actualy read the message bodies
of the said articals...
But what I'd like is to be able to download a list of NEW subject headers
without waiting for all that on-line threading which slows the process
down to my modem connection... automaticly catch up the newsgroup pointers.
and then run ppp-off BEFORE my PC asks me which threads I want to retrieve
in the next run. Then I'd read the articals that were automaticaly downloaded
based on the selections I made last time. Write any folowup or new aticals
I want posted, which would be automaticaly posted the next time ppp-go
was run (like sendmail does with those "Expensive" SMTP mailers...) I'd
also want any articals I requested to be automaticaly downloaded at that
time along with the next list of new artical subject headers etc... BUT
I want the selecting, threading, reading, composing, subscribing unsubscribing,
and so forth to be done while NOT connected to the ISP's NNTP. And ALL
actual posting of articals, and retrieving of subject headers and
requested articals be done automaticaly in a user transparant process
triggered the next time ppp-go is run, (just like sendmail and fetchmail
can be set up to do for E-mail) WITHOUT having to get whole newsgroups
or have a multiple user news spool that needs to be expired based on how
long it's been there rather than simply deleted when user is done with
it.

Now that I can agree with. Only I need the same kind og NON-gui yet EASY to
use tool to feed pine, with user selected articals, and to spool outgoing
artiacls till next time ppp-go is run... (And I don't want it to be a
scheduled cron job that triggers the process... I kind of like the Idea of
going online by typeing ppp-go just before sitting down to supper and
knowing that all the uploading/downloading is happening automaticaly while
I'm enjoying a meal that is NOT going to be interupted by some telemarketer
untill ALL the uploading/downloading takes place, ( I'm reasonably sure I
can find enough stuff to keep my 14.4 modom on the line long enough to
digest my dinner... <g> ) Then if the same automatcic process could also
run things like automated ftp and maybe even an occasional wget or to I'd
almost never need to go on-line in an interactive session that ties up the
phone while I scratch my head (or which ever end my brain gets stimulated
from the scratching of <g> ...)

Subject: NIC card not initializing
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 04:07:34 GMT
Greetings all,
I'm trying to connect my Linux Box to a TCP/IP network. I have a 486DX4 100
with 32MB RAM, DTC 2278E controller, ATI Mach32, and an ISA SMC Elite
Ultra Network card (83C790QF Chipset). I tried using the Kernel
configuration utility under Xwindows. I chose the SMC Ultra module, and
configured the card properly. I then used the Network configuration utility
to setup the ip addresses, net mask, etc. The card did not initialize during
lilo boot. I also tried "ifconfig -a", with no output. I then swapped the
card with a new 3COM Etherlink III card and ran the configuration utilities
again. The same thing happens. I then typed "cat /some directory/proc" to
check for address conflicts, there was none. I also can't find eth0 in the
/dev directory. The HOWTO documents says to recompile the kernel to use the
ethernet modules. The documents says to untar the kernel source file in
"/usr/src" and run make config or make menuconfig. I don't see any kernel tar
files and "make config" yielded an error. How can I recompile the kernel
to use the ethernet module? Any help would beappreciated?
Thank You,
James
P.S. I also inserted, "append eth0=10, 0x300" in lilo.conf. Nothing happens

A friend of mine had an smc ultra and there were problems getting it installed.
If I remember correctly, it was finally recognized as an "eexpress" under the
EtherLink listing of rc.modules. I have no idea what x-configuration util.
you're talking about, but nothing works like opening /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and
uncommenting every freaking ethernet /sbin/modprobe line in the file. Do
that, reboot, and then read the output of :$ dmesg to find out which
module did the trick. But try eexpress first...

At the very least, you will need to create a swap partition and such.
And there's the issue of the boot partition... I'd do a minimal
installation, then move your old system over (i.e., /etc, /home, etc.)
partition by partition. Make sure you make a good back up of everything
first!

I have a solution for you, as well as a question of my own...
I upgraded my kernel to 2.2.3, and built the kernel with the
soundblaster
support as modules.
Look in the kernel documentation directory
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Sound
There is a file called VIBRA16 or something close to that. In it there
is a configuration file that you can save out to isapnp.conf. You will
need to upgrade your isapnp package, so go to a RPM repository and
get 1.17 or 1.18 from there.
The other thing you will need to do is set up your conf.modules (or
modules.conf) file correctly. In the kernel documentation directory,
there is another file called README.Modules. That has all the info
you need to set that file up.
OK. That will get you half way there. My Vibra when configured like
this will play 8-bit sounds only. When I run RealPlayer it will only
make noise when I disable 16-bit sound.
My question to everyone out there is How do I get my Vibra Soundblaster
PNP
to play 16-bit sound?
Thanks in advance,

It would appear to be a true viral infection, and McAfee - true to
form - was incapable of fixing it. Try a real AV program like F-Prot,
AVP, or even Dr.Solomons. I have *never* seen McAfee effectively clean
virus infected files (and it will frequently tell you that perfectly
cleanable files need to be deleted).

General: what happens after startx
Startx in /usr/X11R6/bin is a script which can be looked at. It looks
for user defined .xinitrc and .xserverrc files in your home dir. If none
are found it will use system default files. It starts xinit with
arguments that are pointers to these files.
Xinit starts xinitrc in /usr/X11/xinit which is also a script. It also
looks for user and system .Xresources, .Xmodmap and .Xclient files in your
home and system dirs and when done calls /etc/X11/xinit/Xclient with
Xclient or if no Xclient was found executed some apps like xterm,
xclick and then starts either fvwm or twm window manager.
An Xclient will most likely be found so Xclient will be run. Xclients
does more of the same looking for what files are around expecially
.wm_style which can have what window manager you want to start. Xclients
looks for .wm_style. If its not found it will try to start fvwm or twm.
If .wm_style has a window manager choice in there then Xclient starts
/etc/X11R6/bin/RunWM - actually a link is called but it gets finally to
RunWM. This is also a script which can be looked at. If you have choosen
to run Fvwm95 then it will have that choice passed in as an
argument and setup a few things.
Depending on your choice of window managers passed in RunWM will call a
window manager startup function for your choice of window managers.
For RedHat and and a choice of Fvwm95 the start functions kicks off
/etc/X11/AnotherLevel/fvwm2rc.m4. This script looks at the other
configuration scripts in that directory and sets up your environment for
fvwm95. Its confusing but orderly. For these startup file and all the
others mentioned above you can put echo's and some text in each file and
direct the output with >> to /homedir/startingx to see what took place
during startup.
For more startup information see .FVWM.errors in your home dir and
/tmp/fvwm... also for redirected output from the fvwm2 scripts.
===============
Note: for modifying your desktop quite a bit is done in /etc/X11/Another
Level/decors for both FVWM95 and MWM.
