This whole thread is wandering just a little bit off topic for this
group...
Also, it is becoming an excercise in "I know more than you do about
DNS", which
isn't even funny to read anymore. The best answer was one of the first:

Any other manipulation of files will be wastefull and become

I did manage to get this working. This is what I did:
1. Copied vnc programs into /usr/bin (I think it was that directory. Anyways,
one that is in your path)
2. Telnetted into the Linux box from Win95
3. Ran 'vncserver'
4. The first time you run it, it asks for a password
5. Then it gives a name and session # to connect to (ex: linux.domain.com:1)
6. Then, I ran vncviewer from Win95, and instead of typing the word address, I
typed the numberic IP address : (ex:192.168.1.3:1)
7. It gave me an xterm. Doing a 'ps aux' showed a 'xdm' running.
This worked for me. I didn't start any X programs on the Linux box. I hope this
helps.

Can someone point me to or give me information about setting up a Linux
server to provide thin-client services to dos/windoze machines? I
believe something called Citrix WinFrame does this and I'd like to know
how to do this with Linux.
Thanks much. . .

I just got an email back from Real.com telling me that they are not
planning on making a G2 player for anyone but MS-Mac.
That, of course leaves us out and BeOS as well.
Score one for MS!! Give Mac one (after all Billy isn't worried about
them- he bailed them out last year just to make sure he had some "real"
competition) to offset the monopoly thing. But don't give one to the
actual competition.
My RV 5.0 for linux works just as good as my G2 Plus for windows (minus
the fancy knobs) performance is absolutely just as good on the same
machine.
However *we* are locked out from viewing g2 content.
I am extremely disappointed in Real corp, I thought they were actually a
progressive company- I'm sorry that I ever bought their product, but at
least I won't make that mistake again. (I personally have no problem
with purchasing software- just with getting treated disrespectfully,
being lied to, abused and paying good money for crap, which MS is the
absolute master of)
Too bad really, oh well.

Most times, the Linux gurus are ok.... they get their way around. But
I think a lot of the woes may come from those buying new machines or
wanting to use their existing Windows machines, and then wanting to
try Linux, and then running into a lot of problems because they have
winmodems, winprinters, etc. So, perhaps a much less ambitious project
is a site that list manufacturer and model, and then people help chip in
their experience on each piece of hardware they have on that
particular model. This will help people who want to buy a machine to
run Linux. Something like:
manufacturer: compaq
model: presario xxxx
Works: cd-rom,
ls-120 superdisk
hard-drive
X (or maybe the video card) running Mach64
blah blah blah
printer...
Don't work: Rockwell HCF 56K Winmodem.
Some kind of standard format (or maybe via a form at the website),
and only for the original setup. Would this be useful?
This can be an interactive site like the printers website of Grant
Taylor.
This should help people to steer clear of incompatible hardware, and
help others not to ask again if it doesn't work in the first place.
What do people think?

Go to www.linuxberg.com, then go under the
software section and look for backup utilities.
Linuxberg is mirrored in hkstar, so the respond

I haven't opened the box yet, for just this reason. What printers

Jon,
We have had nothing but good experiences with Xwin from a
company called Starnet, http://www.starnet.com/ -- you can download
a free eval (which is limited to 2 hour sessions). It installs real
well on both Win 95/98, no problem with fonts, or mystery crashes.
It emulates both single windows, or an entire window manager
environment. Really was fairly painless!

Subject: Broken FP emulation in RH 5.2 for sparc
Date: 24 Mar 1999 11:04:44 -0500
It seems that the floating-point emulation in RH 5.2, kernel 2.0.35,
for sparc, is seriously broken. For example, the following program:
[lucier@www tests]$ cat test.c
void main() {
double x = 0.0, y;
y = x/x; /* generate a NaN */
if (y == y)
printf("bad\n");
else
printf("good\n");
}
when compiled with egcs-1.1.2 by "gcc -o test test.c"
yields the following assembly:
[lucier@www tests]$ cat test.s
.file "test.c"
.version "01.01"
gcc2_compiled.:
.section ".rodata"

and produces on an IPX box
[lucier@www tests]$ ./test
Floating point exception (core dumped)
with a message on the console something like
"Attempt to emulate unknown FPop!"
(I don't have the console output in front of me.)
Subsequent runs yield:
[lucier@www tests]$ ./test
Floating point exception (core dumped)
[lucier@www tests]$ ./test
good
So the assembly looks correct, it yields indeterminate results, and
running the thing through gdb shows that it's the fcmpd instruction
that is bombing.
Does anyone know if this is fixed in the 2.2 kernel series? Or how
to otherwise get around it? The egcs documentation says that using
-msoft-float changes the calling sequence for functions, so I can't
use -msoft-float here without recompiling glibc with -msoft-float
(at least that's my understanding).

For some reason, I am having trouble sending attachments over email. I do not
think it is my email program, since I have tried 2 ( kmail & netscape ) with
the same results. It simply hangs there and never goes through. Kmail gives
me the error:
Sending failed:
A SMTP error occured.
Command: <body>
Response: network error
Return code: 0
Netscape says: Message sent, waiting for reply, and then just hangs there.
I also don't think it's the server, since nobody else has had
trouble sending attachments. Is there some daemon or program I'm forgetting to
run? I am using PPP and sending mail directly to an smtp server, not using
sendmail. I don't have any trouble sending normal messages. Thanks for your

When I tried to login through the display manager this morning, my machine
locked. When I rebooted, fsck detected errors in the root partition. I
tried to fix them with fsck, which caused me to lose about a dozen files
(including etc/services, etc/protocols). Now I get these messages repeated
several times when booting:
EXT2-fs error (device 03:01): ext2_write_inode: unable to read inode block -
inode=10049, block=40966
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }

sector=81932
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:01, sector 81932
Is this indicative of a serious problem with the hard disk? I dont' know if
I should just replace the missing files or replace the drive.
Thanks,
Thomas

Hi Bernd,
Yes, I've tried combinations of LBA and Large, but the problem is the same.
NT disk admin doesn't see the drive correctly if there Solaris co-exists on
the drive. The Solaris isntall seemed happier with LBA though, it didn't
give me warning messages about the 1024 cylinder limit, etc.
still frustrated...
