There are several popular products, including MySQL, mSQL, PostgreSQL
and an increasing number of commercial products available for Linux --
Sybase, Oracle, Informix.
I use MySQL and have had excellent luck with it (http://www.mysql.com).
The MySQL ODBC driver for Win32 works quite well. I frequently use
Access as a front end to MySQL, using Linux MySQL as attached tables in
Access. This gives great flexibility (e.g. a website database can be
updated by non-technical users right from their W95 desktops).

The Shockwave Flash and FutureSplash plugins are available for linux

Depends on what you mean by "trouble". I don't consider it to be all
that bad that Linux doesn't support Winmodems, since they are rather
brain-damaged pieces of hardware which bog down your CPU and which can
probably even lock your system up if something goes wrong with this
pseudo-real-time stuff.

All in all, after assembling it and getting it to work, I found that

I am using Kppp to dial with my modem. It is found, but it keeps hanging

The Mini-Terminal and minicom finds it. It is NOT a winmodem. The Query

Why does it hang trying to set the volume on the modem?
The modem is a Jumpered US Robotics 56K board.

ANyway I greatly doubt that Linux will be easier to use than NT Server. I'm
sure that NT Server will be a ideal use for a small home network, becaus
eit's very easy to configure comparable to Linux and supports most network
clients better.

Subject: External SCSI ZIP250 woes...
Date: 28 Mar 1999 15:27:18 GMT
First, let's get this out of the way -- Yes I've read the HOWTO. Yes
I've searched DejaNews up and down. No, it doesn't work yet. Moving on...
Relevant setup info:
AHA2940 UltraSCSI adapter (scsi0) with 3 devices:
6.4 GB Western Digital HD (ID 0)
4.5 GB Quantum Viking II (ID 1)
NEC CDR-1810 (??) (ID 5) (note: cdrom, not a burner)
Newly purchased Zip Zoom Accelerator (trying to make scsi1)
External SCSI ZIP250, termination on, ID set to 6
Dual boot NT 4.0 SP3 (ewww) and RedHat 5.2 running the stock kernel and
modules.
Ok, the drive works under NT, and I confirmed (both via jumper settings and
with NT) that the I/O is at 0x140 and the IRQ is 11. In Linux,
modprobing the aha152x driver has these results (from /var/log/messages,
and _not_echoed to the console):
/sbin/insmod aha152x aha152x=0x140,11,7,1
aha152x: BIOS test: passed, detected 1 controller(s)
aha152x0: vital data: PORTBASE=0x140, IRQ=11, SCSI ID=7, reconnect=enabled,
parity=enabled, synchronous=disabled, delay=100, extended translation=disabled
aha152x: trying software interrupt, lost.
aha152x: IRQ 11 possibly wrong. Please verify.
scsi1 : Adaptec 152x SCSI driver; $Revision: 1.18 $
scsi : 2 hosts.
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 3025, scsi1, channel 0, id 0,
lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 3025, scsi1, channel 0, id 0,
lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
The last two lines repeat for each id through 6. Not surprisingly, when
'fdisk -l /dev/sd?' lists only the 2 hard drives on scsi0. lsmod shows
the aha152x driver is installed. So my first question is -- does this help
anyone? I haven't tried compiling the aha152x driver into the kernel
with the options set in the Makefile because it's the boss' machine and
I'm trying to minimize the amount of time I keep him off it! :) Besides,
this should work, right?
My second question is related. After I install the module and it doesn't work,
I then of course want to try with different options. Well, I either
modprobe -r or just rmmod the aha152x driver. However, when I try to
reinstall the module, it tells me on the console
/lib/modules/preferred/scsi/aha152x.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
and in /var/log/messages:
aha152x: invalid module argument aha152x=0x140,11,7,1,1,0,100,0
So I have to reboot before I can try again! Any ideas why that is.
Thanks all, and sorry to bring up yet another zip question.

I need some help getting my Linux system on the 'Net. I have just installed
Mandrake and the install went great. I next set up KPPP and it works great.
The problem is: I can dial to my ISP with KPPP and I get a connection. I
then try to use Navigator to cruise the web and the status bar tells me it
is looking for the URL I need,, It just never connects.
I can ping my ISP and using Ifconfig, I get a ppp0 connection that says PtP
is running. What have I left out? Is it a routing problem? I'm stumped.
I know there must be someone out there that has had this problem and
resolved it. Thanks in advance to any and all who assist.

Nice. I bought something similar a few weeks ago:
300A Celeron o/c to 450
Abit BH6
128 Mb SDRAM (PC-100) (one piece) Corsair CAS-3
Diamond Viper 550 (NVidia TNT)
10 gig WD Caviar drive
36x CD
Sound Blaster SBLive (useless under linux, but kick ass in Windows)
speakers
MS Elite keyboard
MS Intellipoint wheel mouse
huge tower case
ethernet card
no monitor (already had a 17")
for $1200. It's one great machine.
I haven't heard of anybody having any luck o/c 366s to 550. Have you?

I have had absolutely no luck getting Linux to automount any of my WinNT
(SP4) shares. I have no problem mounting these volumes manually via
smbmount, but, I would prefer not be burdened with this task every time I
bootup.
RedHat 5.1 distribution:
kernel-2.0.34-0.6
smbfs-2.0.1-4
am-utils-6.0a16-4
and, for what its worth:
samba-1.9.18p10-5

nfs-server-2.2beta29-5 & nfs-server-2.2beta29-5 (installed, not
active)
autofs-3.1.1-4 (installed, not active)
I've read through the Am-utils (4.4BSD Automounter Utilities) user manual at
http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~ezk/am-utils/am-utils_toc.html about 129 times.
But, due either to a huge mental block, or, utter stupidity on my part, I
just can't seem to get the hang of it! Everything I've tried, so far, had
been greeted with error upon error. So now, nearing the end of my rope,
I'm asking for your collective wisdom on this matter.
Could anyone help me understand the user manual in terms of what I wish to
accomplish? Or, better yet, provide me with a sample of a working

Thank you for your quick reply. The xvidtune sounds like it's pretty
accurate. My monitor doesn't
have that nifty little button for checking the refresh rate - it's a cheap
no-name brand. However, when running under Win95 I can run it at 85Hz.
I'm probably just spending an inordinate amount of time in front of the
