Enable aic7xxx support as a module in the SCSI device section of your .config
file (made during the "make config" step. Make the bzImage again. Make the
modules. Install the modules. Then redo the mkinitrd.

Are you by any chance using a diamonad stealth video card?
Try getting a flash rom upgrade (www.diamondmm.com).

Subject: Fdisk and Maxtor 4320 17.2 Gb disk partitions
Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 20:32:17 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Some time ago I have installed a second IDE disk (Maxtor 4320
17.2 Gb). As I could not get it recognised correctly by W95, I
decided to keep the Maxtor entirely for Linux (which prints a correct
H/S/C at boot time) and free the first 6 Gb disk for W95 (and LILO).
I have partitioned the Maxtor with fdisk (version "fdisk v2.1 (>4GB)")
as follows:
Disk /dev/hdc: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 33483 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 1 1 4064 2048224+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc2 3072 4065 8128 2048256 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc4 7168 8129 33483 12778920 5 Extended
/dev/hdc5 7168 8129 10160 1024096+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc6 9216 10161 16256 3072352+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc7 15360 16257 18288 1024096+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc8 17408 18289 22352 2048224+ 83 Linux native

/dev/hdc12 32768 33281 33483 102280+ 82 Linux swap
and although I noted the discrepancy between the "Begin" and "Start"
columns, I did no paid any attention (and it worked OK since a month or
so). Until I did a "verify" today with fdisk and got the following:
Warning: partition 1 overlaps partition 2.
Warning: partition 2 overlaps partition 5.
Warning: partition 5 overlaps partition 6.
Warning: partition 6 overlaps partition 7.
Warning: partition 7 overlaps partition 8.
Warning: partition 8 overlaps partition 9.
Warning: partition 9 overlaps partition 10.
Warning: partition 10 overlaps partition 11.
Warning: partition 10 overlaps partition 12.
Warning: partition 11 overlaps partition 12.
Logical partition 5 not entirely in partition 4
253053 unallocated sectors
My fdisk was from RH5.1 and I copied the RH5.2 and used that one on the
disk ("fdisk v2.8") and I got:
Disk /dev/hdc: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 33483 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 1 4064 2048224+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc2 4065 8128 2048256 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc4 8129 33483 12778920 5 Extended
/dev/hdc5 8129 10160 1024096+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc6 10161 16256 3072352+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc7 16257 18288 1024096+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc8 18289 22352 2048224+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc9 22353 32511 5120104+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc10 32512 33019 256000+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdc11 33020 33280 131512+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdc12 33281 33483 102280+ 82 Linux swap
This looked of course much better:-) (it simply doesn't print the
"begin" column) but I am still getting the same warnings when I use
"verify".
What is wrong? Is there anything wrong with the disk, or is it
fdisk, or both? I am concerned that I am heading for a catastrophic
disk crash when I would fill one of the partitions.
Thanks for any pointers or help.

No, this is refering to the options selected for the kernel when you run
make config. Instructions for compiling the kernel can be found in the
README file in /usr/src/linux and the KERNEL howto guide.

Excellent!

Yes, this is not unexpected. Tim has been very busy with other things
lately, and the LDP coordination has suffered a little as a result.
We are working on process changes to prevent this sort of problem in
the future.
In particular, there are probably dozens of HOWTO versions queued up
in Tim's mailbox; Lars is working on an automated update mechanism to
fix this occasional problem.
> What procedure should I be following?
You've followed the only procedure there is for getting something
added to the LDP stuff at metalab. Tim will eventually get back to
you, but he appears to be a month or so behind right now.
The other useful alternative would be to have it absorbed as a chapter
of the PPP howto, or referenced therein. I've read the PPP HOWTO
recently, and it's perhaps a bit dated; I'd have expected linuxconf or
some other sort of quasi-automatic tool to be in wide use by now...

Subject: problem compiling
Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 13:06:48 -0800
I'm having some problems compiling some programs on a newly-installed RH 5.2
(2.0.36) system. When running configure for kwintv, it says:
checking whether the C++ compiler (g++ -s) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot
create executables.
I tried installing the libstdc++-2.8.0-14.i386.rpm, and
libstdc++-devel-2.8.0-14.i386.rpm. I also tried egcs-c++-1.0.2-8.i386.rpm,
but it said I needed egcs-c++-1.0.2 which I couldn't find.
Then, I installed gcc-c++-2.7.2.3-8.i386.rpm which then let me get further
along in making xawtv, but I still can't run that other configure script.
Did I not install the C++ compiler when I ran the RH install? If so, what
file(s) do I need?
Thanks,
Tom

This has nothing to do with Web browsers per se. You can't log in to a Web
page because HTTP is a stateless protocol -- it makes a connection, fetches
a document, and then drops the connection. The next time you want a new
document, it opens a new connection.
There is a way to password protect directories so that before a document
can be retrieved, the client will have to send a valid username and
password, but this is dependent not on the browser but on the server. With
Apache, this is done via a file called .htaccess in the directory to be
protected, and a password database which you will need to set up. More
information is available in the Apache documentation. Once set up, a user
attempting to access a document in that directory will be given a prompt to
enter a username and password. Most browsers will cache this request, so
that subsequent requests to documents requiring the same username and
password can be made without additional authentication, from the end user's
perspective.
There may be a few browsers that don't understand this process (though I'm
not aware of any), but both Lynx and Navigator do.

Can someone help me with figuring out how to attach a file to an email
in Linux/Unix. This is the application:
Online Employment Application - browser page. The user fills in the
information, using browse to find the resume file on their local
system. My script (perl5) uses NOTIFY and sendmail to send the
information to the person handling the apps. Everything works fine,
except attaching the user linked file.
Here's the script:
if ($Vars{'Submit'} eq 'Submit') {
open(NOTIFY,"|/usr/sbin/sendmail -t");
print NOTIFY "To: nori\@myhome.net\n";
print NOTIFY "From: $Vars{'email'}\n";
print NOTIFY "Subject: OnLine Application\n";
print NOTIFY "File: $Vars{'resume'}\n"; # This is where the
problem lies
print NOTIFY
"$Vars{'name'}\n$Vars{'address'}\n$Vars{'cstzip'}\n\n$Vars{'comments'}\n\n$Vars{'resumetxt'}\n";
close (NOTIFY);
&ReturnSuccess;
} else {
I can find no supporting documentation for sendmail allowing file
attachment. Is there such an animal? If so, what's the syntax?
Thanx EVER so much. This is the only holdup on completion of this
project.

Something went horribly wrong when I tried to install StarOffice 5.0 the
other day.
I'm running RedHat 5.1 (upgraded here and there) and KDE 1.1. StarOffice
needed some glibc libraries that it supposedly couldn't find on my pc.
Since that glibc .tar file that came with the program was to be
installed in a StarOffice subdirectory, I thought what the hey, install
it anyway.
1. From an X Windows terminal I run /bin/sh to then run the script that
installs the libraries (as is said in the readme).
2. The libraries don't install successfully, and the shell stops
recognizing commands.
3. I can't even exit X properly, and when I press ctl-alt-backspace it
comes back to a command line login instead of kdm.
4. Try to shutdown:
/bin/shutdown: file not found
5. I do the forbidden: press the power button.
Needless to say, nothing cleared up magically when I rebooted. The
normal Linux boot messages scroll up the screen, until it gets to this:
Partition check
hda1 hda2 <hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8>
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
Then nothing. Blank. You enter commands and there's no reaction, not
even an error message. I tried to use RedHat's rescue disk and get
nothing but an error message, too.
So, what do I do? Should I start looking for an upgrade disk? Is all my
data loss (well, the stuff that wasn't backed up yet?) Please help me.
Sob. Sob. Boo-hoo.
