You shouldn't have to recompile your kernel to use ALSA...
I didn't, and my setup works fine. The sound drivers in RH5.2 were
rewritten to be completely modular... which means that all you have
to do is 'rmmod <old soundcard module name>' to unload the old drivers.
(they'll get loaded again at boot time, but once you have ALSA up and
running, you can edit /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit to load ALSA at boot time)
Then you shouldn't have any conflicts with ALSA...
I would guess that your error messages are a result of
recompiling your kernel...

Oops, wrong directions. After you un-tar un-zip it, you should run
directly the setupwfc you find in the current directory (ie don't go to
the linux directory, and don't run hinst).

silly idea. This is something MS will do. this is just more confusion
and more time wasting.
keep things simple. A distribution should have everthing in it, and
less the user decides what they want or not want, not you. You can
give documentations on what is in each package (and some distro' allready
do that) and user can decide what to install or not.

Yes. We need ONE Gnu-linux, not 25 of them.
But get rid of this silly idea of having a Linux workstation vs Linux server
vs Linux personal vs. Linux etc.. stuff.

For those who are new to this planet, the phrase "Microsoft do it this
way, GNU do it the other" is normally a bit of a clue as to which is
better.
Putting '.' in your path is a well known no-brainer. If you put it at
the end of your path then one day you will want to run a file called
'test' and typing 'test' won't do what you think (try it) . Of course,
if you know the names of all 500+ commands on your system that won't
be a problem.
Putting '.' at the start of your path means that one day you will be
in /tmp and some Very Nasty person will have put a Very Nasty
executable file in there called 'ls'. What do you think will happen
then?
There's a REASON why bash doesn't have '.' in its path automatically.
If you really feel you can't type ./ get a GUI.
As an absolutely last resort, '.' at the end is not as bad as '.' at
the start.
Choose life. Type './'.

Hi Chris,
I bought PQ's partition magic (which includes BootMagic) and
had similar hanging problems..
My original intent was to push Win98 into 4G and have 4G for Linux ..
The partioning would be
achieved with that nice, minimal effort GUI...as opposed to fdisk..
Anyway, upon launch, the GUI hangs.. Only resolvable by hard booting -
via the powercord!
Interesting problem though, I wonder what the program is takin' hold of.
..alas, there existed a DOS executable that allowed me to
'effortlessly'
partition the disk - course I had to give DOS a little more memory to
play with
or the operation would fail....
I boot Linux via a floppy - haven't used BootMagic yet.
Just thought I would express my initial disgust with this $60 piece of
software..

Maybe because it requires a faster processor and more RAM than most
of us have or need under Linux, or because of the price, or because

The GNU Service Directory lists individuals and corporations
who provide support and programming services, paid or unpaid,
for GNU software.
It is currently being updated and revised. If you are interested
in being listed, or currently are listed, please read the message
below.
The GNU Service Directory is available on our web site at
http://www.gnu.org/prep/service.html. It is also available
on GNU ftp sites in the GNUinfo subdirectory, and in some
distributions of GNU software (in /etc/SERVICE).
===================================================================
If you are already listed: please go to http://www.gnu.org/prep/service.html
and check your listing. Send a message to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> with an update
or to say that the listing can remain as it is (with a new update date
on it).
If you are considering listing yourself or your company:
Before the FSF will list your name in the GNU Service Directory,
we ask that you agree informally to the following terms:
1. You will not restrict (except by copyleft) the use or distribution
of any software, documentation, or other information you supply anyone
in the course of modifying, extending, or supporting GNU software.
This includes any information specifically designed to ameliorate the
use of GNU software.
2. You will not take advantage of contact made through the Service
Directory to advertise an unrelated business (e.g., sales of
non-GNU-related proprietary information). You may spontaneously
mention your availability for general consulting, but you should not
promote a specific unrelated business unless the client asks.
Please include some indication of your rates, because otherwise users
have nothing to go by. Please put each e-mail address inside "<>".
Please put nothing else inside "<>".
A few guidelines for writing an entry: try to make it short, matter-of-
fact, not "sales-oriented" - list what programs you can support and what
services you provide, give your qualifications, and provide contact information
and rates. Try not to go over about 50 lines at the most; roughly 25 would
be better. A quick look at the Service Directory will give you good models
to follow.
Send new listings to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
Thanks!

its log file however. I've seen posts by others regarding an ever growing log

Someone mentioned a technique where the file (interbase.log) can be redirected

doing this from memory, sorry if I get it wrong). Being completely new to Linux

The MBR is the first sector of the first drive (i.e. hda aka c:). The
one that is connected to IDE 0 if it is a IDE-drive. This sector is the
one that is booted after BIOS has completed its check.

No, the thing that will happen is that LILO writes in the MBR, and by
loading LILO you will be given the choice to either load Linux or an
other OS (such as Win98)

Yes, it is nearly failsafe. I have never encountered any problems with
it, and if anything happens you can erase LILO from the MBR by booting
from a DOS-floppy and doing fdisk /mbr as you say.

To change your LILO-installation you have to, as root, edit the first
line of your LILO configuration file (/etc/lilo.conf). It says:
boot=/dev/hda3 (or something like that. The "hda3"-part is where
LILO currently is installed.)
You should change it to:
boot=/dev/hda (even if the original line said something like
/dev/hdb2 it shall say /dev/hda here.)
Then you save the file and type:
/sbin/lilo
at the prompt to install LILO to the new location (the MBR in this
case).
Note that typing just "lilo" will probably give you the same result, but
if you are su-ing then /sbin won't be in your path. If you didn't fully
understand the last sentence, just ignore it.

Well, there you go. It should work good if you have IDE-drive(s). I
assume you do.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society of America recently started an
advertising campaign with the slogan "MS: It's not a software company".
Seasoned IT professionals will have no trouble telling the two MS's
apart.
One is a debilitating and surprisingly widespread affliction that
renders
the sufferer barely able to perform the simplest task. The other is a
disease.

Hi,
Has anyone had any luck with redirecting the output of the 'at' command to a file? I
need to be able to work with the output without it going through email. The man page
says that it can be redirected elsewhere, but I have had no luck doing so.
Thanks for the help.

Unless, that is, The Man comes back in 6 weeks and delivers a mighty
smack upside the head of Microsoft, requiring them to disclose APIs,
format, and protocols (present and future) until such time as they are
no longer ruled to have monopoly power.
