: If this "dummy libreadline" doesn't actually do anything, then no one would

: supposed to do, so it's irrelevant.
You just changed your viewpoint from there must be an API compatible
alternative library to there must be an API compatible alternative library
that implements all of the features of the original. You're also assuming
that the library is an essential piece of the program. I specifically
picked readline because it's not essential to the working of any program
I've seen it linked against. Even in the case where the library *is*
essential to the program, the clone library isn't required to implement
every single function of the original library. For the longest time,
lesstif was not as complete as motif but yet people were claiming that
motif-linked GPL apps were legal because you could drop lesstif in as
a replacement. The case of using an incomplete dreadline library is
not any different.
: We're talking about a situation where
: someone distributes a program that has to be linked with a GPLed library in
: order to function properly. If the program were linked with dreadline it
: wouldn't do so, and the documentation would presumably not mention this as
: part of its installation instructions. Someone would have to create a
: functional replacement for libreadline, and then the program would no
: longer be effectively derived from libreadline.
The incompleteness of the alternative library shouldn't affect the
question of where the program was derived. Would the author of the
program be at fault if the user runs the program against readline 1.0
which presumably is missing features and has bugs? No, they wouldn't.
Similiarly, if the user runs the program against dreadline which contains
void functions or minimal functionality, the author should not be fault.
Those situations are usage issues not copying issues and therefore are
not covered by copyright law.

: >say that a certain action is against the "spirit of copyright law",

: Using what mechanism? The GPL is only enforceable by virtue of copyright
: law. Although it refers to itself as a license, I suspect that it would
: be considered as unenforceable as a shrinkwrap license. But copyright law
: provides the basis for setting restrictions on copying.
True but no one said you had to rely solely upon copyright law for the
terms of your license. For instance, the newly released QPL specifically
mentions linking and therefore removes the cloud of confusion that we
are currently experiencing. Granted, in the future, the term "linking"
could become outdated due to some new advance in software development
but it closes up the loophole today and is definitely more up to date
than copyright law's interpretation of the situation.
The alternative is to accept that dynamic linking of GPL'd A and non-GPL'd
B is not prohibited by neither copyright law nor the license (since the
license relies upon copyright law).
: All that RMS is doing is claiming that two activities should be considered
: legally equivalent if they're functionally equivalent. Dynamic and static
: linking are functionally equivalent if there's no alternative library,
: hence the resulting program should be considered a derivative of the
: library in both cases.
Ok, he thinks they should be but as it stands, they aren't so distributing
a program dynamically linked against readline should be perfectly legal
(if not acceptible) regardless of the existance of an alternative library.

Heya,
Within a few weeks the amount of computers in my home is going to go up
to three
and occasionally peak at six, that will all at some point require access
to the net.
To this end I have acquired all the parts for a Linux box,
The big question is, will it be fast enough? The serial ports are full
speed 16500A UART
and the network card is 10 mps, however, the rest of it is still a 486
Dx2 50 with 8 megs
of ram on an ISA bus. All I plan to do is get it to dial up on command
to my ISP and run I.P.
masquesrading for all the other computers through the modem. Do I need
to purchase more in
the way of hardware or is it adaquate?
Cheers

Greetings!
As Linux knowledge is getting increasingly important...
I'm wondering whether there is some lecture/lab, instructor based
training course available for fundamental Linux knowledge like
installation, basic configuration, troubleshooting, e.t.c. If not this
media, maybe some CBT or other selfpaced - except the books that are
available in masses...?
Any input highly appreciated!

I've done this on a 6100 with a Newer210 card. You need to change the
load order of the extensions. I got these instructions from somebody
else:
I made a duplicate of the MkLinux Booter extension and used ResEdit to
make it a type INIT, then renamed it with a coupla spaces in front so it
boots early, but right after the MAXPowr extension.
Then I took the original MkLinux Booter extension and used ResEdit to
make it a type ????. According to something that someone emailed me, the
system needs to find a file called "MkLinux Booter" [no spaces] in the
Extensions folder otherwise it will hang. So I took the original MkLinux
Booter and made it a type ???? so that it would be ignored by the boot
sequence.
I left the MAXPowr extension as is. Good luck! Lemme know if it works.

.lrp files are in-fact .tgz files under the covers. Just use the
files you've got. The way things work seems to have changed and left
the documentation behind.

Ummm...are you kidding? Sure they're locked. The C300A is locked at
4.5x, therefore 4.5x66=300, or 4.5x100=450. The C400 is locked at 6x, as

Have you tried adding a "killall X" (or whatever works on your system)

Incidently, does anyone know if there is a way of moving to a certain
virtual console programmatically? I.e. "vt 1" will make virtual

Subject: How to install Apache 1.3.4 + SSL OVER 1.3.3
Date: Sat, 06 Mar 1999 21:06:28 GMT
Hello,
I am a linux/apache newbie. After reading a number of messages
regarding this, I am confused. I am currently running RH5.2 with
Apache 1.3.3. I have apache configuration files that I have
tweaked (virtual servers, etc.) and am quite happy with.
I would like to upgrade the Apache 1.3.3 to 1.3.4 + SSL
_in the easiest manner possible_ and retain my original
*.conf configuration files. I have never compiled apache
before, as it was installed with the redhat distribution.
I need to have both HTTP and HTTPS functionality.
Would anyone be kind enough to give me step-by-step
instructions on what packages I should download, and what
to do in what order? I don't want to screw up my apache 1.3.3
in case the 1.3.4 upgrade is unsuccessful...
Thanks very much for your patience everyone!

I tried 1280x1024 (which is what my monitor docs say it will do at 60HZ.
No improvement. I then tried alt cntl plus and it had NO affect then
alt cntl minus also with no affect, nada , zip zilch. I wonder
if there is something more sinister wrong. By the way Xwindows looked
fine with my original installation of Red Hat 5.2.
