MySQL _is_ a database engine, that means it only supports its own database
format. You cannot "open" an .MDB file with it, for instance. In order to
convert from Access (or anything) to anything else, the most general solution
is to write a small application using both sides' native drivers (or ODBC) to
pump the data over (you'll probably need to massage it anyways)...
Another solution is to dump the source databases as text files (i.e. comma
separated values), and then use the MySQL command LOAD DATA INFILE, as MySQL
_does_ have the (very flexible) ability to read data from ASCII files. This
solution only works if the columns in the source file match up exactly to the
(existing) destination table. Almost _any_ customization requirement during
data transfer immediately makes the first method necessary.
Hope this helps!

MySQL supports MySQL databases. I saw lying around somewhere a little
VBA script to export MS-Access databases to a MySQL server. I don't
remember where it was, but it looked rather trivial. It does require
that both machines be up at the same time, so if you're installing linux
onto the same server, this could be a problem. But you can just copy the
.mdb file to another machine and connect remotely. It also requires the
use of the MySQL ODBC driver on the Win32 machine.

I'm trying to set up a dual boot system with Red Hat and Win98
I used a mini-how - to posted at
http://www.eskimo.com/~praxis/win98.html
it has you create a few batch files and a menu that asks for the OS to load.
It seems to load but I get the following errors while linux is loading:
VFS: cannot open root device 08:22
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:22
any ideas? I have two HD's the first is 4.3GB and is solely for WIN98. The
second is a 1.2GB that
is entirely partitioned for Linux. The problem is I can not recall what
partition it was on. Right before the error
it lists:
hda1, hda2, (hda5)
hdc1, hdc2, (hdc5), (hdc6)
in the linux.bat file there is a command:
c:\loadlin c:\vmlinuz root = /dev/hda3 ro
it says to substitute the hda3 for what ever partition linux is installed
on. I originally didn't have loadlin or vmlinuz on the c: so I copied them
from the CD. In WIN98 I am unable to see the second drive but it shows up
in the start up. I just can't access it with windows explorer et al. Any
ideas would be greatly appreciated...

I would recommend checking permissions to the device, like:
ls -l /dev/hda1
if the windows partition is the first partition on the first
IDE drive, and check the options it's being mounted with in
the file "/etc/fstab". If root can write to it but users can't
it's probably permissions on /dev/hda1, (or what ever the
proper device file is...) so "chmod 777 /dev/hda1" as root
would give all users full access to that device, (if it's
been mounted without any other restrictions in /etc/fstab).
Hope this is of some help...

Make sure you include 'generic' scsi support in the kernel. (The helps
on it mention something about scanners and other devices.) This is
needed since the kernel proper doesn't know a thing about cd burners and
it needs to allow the application (cdrecord) to issue scsi commands
directly to do its thing.
That -scanbus can't find anything is indicative of that: it uses the
generic scsi access to find drives on the system and query them.

Hello,
I got a PowerMac 7300 running with linuxppc-R4 and I have upgraded the
kernel to 2.2.6 and installed Qt1.44 from source. Everything is fine
except when I tried to install the icq clone for KDE, like the kicq,
klicq, kxicq. Of coz there is no binaries for ppc. So I grab the source
and compile it. It complains there is not icqlib and then I grab the
icqlib and compile it. It does generate errors during the make, it said
errors occurs in /usr/include/linux/in.h. 'cos I got two other intel
machines running linux already and I compare the in.h file and they looks
the same.... I'm just wondering what is the different between linuxppc and
linux i386? I mean if I want to do some application compilation, what
should I look for to fix the problem?

The DocuPrint P8 does not work with Linux. It's a WinPrinter. I owned one
and wound up giving it to my son and buying myself a Brother HL-1040. The
only way I could get the P8 working with Linux was over the network on a
Windows machine using RedMon.
Do a DejaNews search... there's a thread on this.

Subject: Playing through xcdroast
Date: 11 May 1999 01:58:45 GMT
Hi!
I'm completely stuck on this one and hope someone can shed some light:
1) Bought an HP8110i, an IDE type CDRW drive.
2) I am running RH 5.2 with an Intel Motherboard which has a CS4232
sound chip on it.
3) Connected the drive up. Recompiled the Kernel with the SCSI emulation
of IDE. Also did the module thing where I load:
23 % cat /proc/modules
opl3 3 0
cs4232 1 0
uart401 2 [cs4232] 0
ad1848 4 [cs4232] 0
sound 15 [opl3 cs4232 uart401 ad1848] 0
soundcore 1 [sound] 5
soundlow 1 [sound] 0
Now:
cat songfile.au >/dev/audio works fine
xplaycd works fine (I can hear sound through the computer speakers).
Storing to/reading from Data CD's works fine.
/dev/dsp exists.
xcdroast counts tracks and track times of audio CDs fine.
First (minor) problem:
I get "tkPriv(activeMenu) No such element in array" when I try to seleect
the output device from the Misc Setup Menu.
Second (major) problem:
All my audio CD recordings are blank. And I hear nothing when I try to
play through xcdroast. I get a "pop" which I always get before playing
sounds, but otherwise I'm hosed. A friend of mine is a singer so I was
hoping to be able to help him burn some CDs but have no idea where to look
next.
Anyone have any thoughts on what could be wrong?
Thanks,
Roger

Has your /dev/fd0 definition been changed?
Do you have a loose wire in your hardware?
Does A: work if you dual boot (assuming you can or are willing to do that)?

Has your BIOS somehow been redefined? A low battery can sometimes do this if
you turn your machine off at night to save power.
If not, then you may have a failed floppy on your machine. This has happened to

Some M$ users are quite smart in other departments. As someone with an

somehow. Besides I have a SPARC II Solaris box at work and write lots

Linux works nicely for servers and has lots of programming tools for
developers. As a bonus your code will probably run without any changes
on all those networks of Unix boxen and your local T3E (probably not
geographically close to most of its users). The closest T3E to me is
abnout 200 miles away and I do not have access to it (but could get
access given a good reason).
There are alternative projects, which are not for idiots, like proving
P != NP or P != NC (note that P means different things in each
case). Proving either means instant fame. (Nobody believes P=NP or P=NC).

Yup.
Just twidle the keyboard's state out of cooked mode. Nice programs
will return the keyboard to the state they found it when they have
finished or get halted by job control. To do this restore the original
settings when to get SIGTSTP and change them back again when you get
SIGCONT).
This is portable across all known unicies and POSIX includes cooked,
rare and raw keyboard modes.

Also, under Unix the difference between a source code install vs a

If you take a look at /var/log/messages you should see a message

When you "kill" a process, you're sending it a signal.
You can handle this signal. For instance,
$pid = open( ... );
$SIG{INT} = sub { kill 9 => $pid; exit 1; };
Then if your program received SIGINT, it would execute the
(here anonymous) function to kill the process.

Then I guess economists don't get to experimentally determine what
monopolistic means, right? Because the top 5 producers owning more
than 50% of the market is the stage at which price-fixing enters the
picture ...

No, I made sure everything was set.

I'm starting to think that's what it is. Kinda sucks, since I got a new
floppy anyway that doesn't work, leaving me with nothing. I'm gonna
have to get another one I guess. *sigh*
