I have just upgraded from RH 5.2 to 6.0 (intel) and I am running
Linux w/ GNOME. I am having a couple of problems.
1) I have also installed all of the KDE RPMs from the RH CD. However,
when I try to open some of the KDE applications (under GNOME), they
crash. Some work (e.g., xdvi), but the icons are messed up. For
example, when I try to open kmail, I get the following error:
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$ kmail
We are starting normaly
ERROR: cannot load bitmap /opt/kde/share/apps/kmail/pics/stopwatch.xbm
kmail: QPixmap::convertToImage: Cannot convert a null pixmap

kmail: QPainter::begin: Cannot paint null pixmap
kmail: QPainter::setPen: Will be reset by begin()
*** KMail got signal 11
*** KMail got signal 11
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$
I should also mention that the KDE applications show up in my GNOME menu.
As for KDE:
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$ rpm -qa | grep kde
switchdesk-kde-1.7.0-1
kdebase-1.1.1pre2-2
kdelibs-1.1.1pre2-2
kdesupport-1.1.1pre2-1
kdeutils-1.1.1pre2-1
kdenetwork-1.1.1pre2-1
kdemultimedia-1.1.1pre2-1
kdegraphics-1.1.1pre2-1
kdeadmin-1.1.1pre2-1
kdegames-1.1.1pre2-2
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$
2) I have installed the enlightenment and Window Maker RPMs, but have
not been able to use either one. When I use FVWM2, all is well. My
.xinitrc file is
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$ cat .xinitrc
xrdb -merge ~/.Xdefaults
# xsetroot -solid darkgray
# xv -quit -root /home/cribari/images/grayback.xpm
# xearth &
# xterm -geometry 80x60+0+0 &
# xterm -geometry +500+0 &
# xclock -digital -geometry -0+0 &
panel &
# background-properties --init &
# keyboard-properties --init &
# mouse-properties --init &
ical -iconic &
# exec wmaker
exec fvwm2
# exec enlightenment
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$
It only works w/ the exec fvwm2 line. When I coment it out, and
uncomment either the one above it or the one below it, it does not
work. These window managers are installed:
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$ rpm -qa | grep Windowmaker
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$ rpm -qa | grep WindowMaker
WindowMaker-0.52.0-2
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$ rpm -qa | grep enlighten
enlightenment-conf-0.15-5
enlightenment-0.15.5-32
[cribari@edgeworth cribari]$
This happens even when I am logged in as root.
How can I run GNOME with elightenment and/or WindowMaker?
Thanks. Best, Francisco Cribari.

I think this is a 'feature' -- my guess is that the kernel won't allow tar
to chown/chgrp files to the owner/group specified in the tar file. This is
a good thing, since users can't just untar a suid root-owned executable to
facilitate their hacking of the system. :-) However, since root is the
super-user, when root untars a file, root has sufficient permissions to allow
the chown/chgrp-ing of the files to the owners specified in the tar file.
(When a tar archive is created, the owner/group of the files is stored in the
archive. Sometimes the owner/group may match the UID/GID of someone on your
system, in which case you'll see the files owned by some user/group on your
system with the matching UID/GID. If they don't match some UID/GID on your
system, that's when you see them owned by numbers.)
As for your vmware/mtv problems, I think that they might not be related to this.
I don't know what they could be, without more information.
Hope this was fairly clear,

Without having seen the CD, I would guess you should look for 'egcs'
instead of 'gcc' (egcs being a rapidly developed offshoot of gcc).

Looks great on screenshots, easy install.
I haven't used it however because the system requirements for the
Java1.2 version are a bit high.
Starting up is very, very slow on my current machine, and seems to quit
on me when it comes to building the main screen.
I'll try and run it on my new to come machine.
Be sure to get the blackdown JDK1.2 first.

Urg! What are you doing this for? Can't you just change all the 100_xxx

a) Type "./a.out" if you are in the directory.
(check for correct permissions)
b) Add "." to your path. Might be a security risk.
c) Move your programm to a directory which is in your path. Might only
work if you

I have been using diald for the 2.0.x kernels.
Now that I have change over to RedHat 6.0, it appears that I have to use
pppd for demand dialing.
The documentation for demand dialing is relatively sparse. I know I need
demand and idle but the active filter rules elude me. What is the format
for filters? I have a tough time figuring out the output of tcpdump.
Where can I find adequate documentation?
I need to rewrite /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup used in RedHat 6.0
so that demand dialing is supported.

Problem solved. I upgraded to RH 6.0 and also upgraded Netscape to
4.5.1-5 (the latest RPM) and the serious problems went away. There
is a minor error related to X on startup, but Acroread 4 runs fine
as a helper app now. Unfortunately I do not know what step solved
the "segmentation violation". RH 6.0, the new netscape rpm, or both?

I use a Slackware distribution. Does that mean that I don't belong to the
"Linux Community"? I'm glad that Red Hat offered support for the product that
they sold, but that doesn't make them the sole representative of the "Linux
Community" any more than S.U.S.E or Slackware or Debian or Caldera.
I agree that Mindcraft could have received service through Red Hat (yes, I did
know that Mindcraft used a Red Hat release, and was entitled to such service),
but that doesnt mean that Red Hat is the exclusive voice of the "Linux Community".
They are a bookstore selling a popular book, not the author of the book.

It's interesting to note that the most likely reason for the "right to
bear arms" is not to protect oneself from other citizens, but to protect
the citizenry from the government. Recall at the time of the american
revolution the "government" was the enemy. Also note the way the bill
of rights are written, i.e. the do not gaurantee your rights to free
speech, or to due process ... They *prevent* the government from
passing laws to restirct these "rights". Why do you have to *protect*
the *people* from the government? The answer - human nature. There
is always a certain percentage of humans who would willingly use
whatever means(laws, rules, ...) to deprive you of life, liberty
and the persuit of happiness. It's also a fundamental precept
of any republic that the *people* are more powerful than the
government. Throughout history it is almost always the other
way arround, and I would venture to say a republic is a
very difficult thing to acheive and to keep.
These are also the wrong newsgroups for this discussion. If you
wish to debate the issue, then please go elswhere.

It uses a p200 cpu and an asus socket7 MB, 32MB RAM and a standard

First rule when using kppp is to have a clean /etc/ppp directory with
nothing in it:
cd /etc
mv ppp ppp.x
mkdir ppp
A lot of the default settings for ppp (provided in the /etc/ppp/* magic
files by your Linux distro) are not right for kppp.

Bob,
Check each of the ls-lR files in the directories to be sure that all of the
appropriate symlinks exist and that all permissions are correct. I had a
number of problem with the second stage until I figured out that I was
missing a large number of symlinks.
Once I walked the directory tree checking ls-lR files against the actual
contents, I was able to create all of the appropriate symlinks. Don't panic
if it looks like a symlink points to nothing. Many of the symlinks actually
point to files that won't exist until the actual installation boot.
Setup the links, check the permissions, burn a new disc and you should be
working.
