lprold is installed, I did lpr /etc/passwd, lpq listed no jobs, lpc
status showed 1 job printing, it never printed, I removed the
/var/spool/lpd stuff and re-did Yast, this time the file printed but
from the end of each line to the edge of the page it printed solid
black...
I have set up printing on Slackware, Freed BSD, Interactive UNIX, Red
Hat, Sun, HP-UX, IBM AIX, etc., and I've read the Suse docs and sone
linux books but can't seem to find out what I'm doing wrong with Suse.

Hi
make sure u are in /usr/src/linux, before you type the make config.
here is a great Faq on kernel compiling
http://jgo.local.net/LinuxGuide/linux-kernel.html
btw, for any kernels 2.2.x use make bzImage instead of make zImage
;)
good luck

Upon further thought on the matter, since the "bully" in the anecdote puts a
wood chip on his shoulder, I wouldn't be surprised if the origin of the
story was in one of the many "Tales of the North Woods" in American folklore
about the loggers of the Pacific Northwest and their legendary hero, Paul
Bunyan. This is strictly a guess here but I'm otherwise prety sure about
the rest of the details of the "chip on the shoulder" story.

I just bought SuSE 6.1 Linux. It came with a boot disk and a disk labeled
"modules". What is the purpose of the modules disk ? It wasn't needed in
the installation. I couldn't find reference to it anywhere in the manual.
My modules disk happened to be unreadable, unformatted or corrupted. Two
possibilities come to mind :
A) The disk is supposed to have something in it, but by very bad luck of
the draw, the copy I just purchased was defective, corrupted.
B) SuSE deliberately gives away an unformatted disk for some later use.
Which is right ? Can someone tell me what's the purpose and use of the
"modules" disk ?

Probably the most featureful option in this regard at this time comes
with CBB, which has been offering the feature of "scheduled" transactions.
Essentially, you put together a file that schedules transactions using a
format not-merely-reminiscent of a crontab, and can then run a process
that adds in scheduled transactions. Anything that's scheduled and
is future-dated gets purged, to be replaced by the transactions that
the process adds; anything that is dated before the present date gets
largely left alone, although "budgeted" transactions get marked...
It would make much sense to add such functionality to GnuCash, although
hopefully that will wait for there to be a "production" release that
may be treated as a stable baseline...

I'm trying to build and run tripwire-1.2 on a Red Hat 6.0 Sparc
Linux box, but have run into the strangest problem: when running
"make test" after the build, all of the "sha" signatures fail
to match!
I've built tripwire on quite a number of boxes, but have never
encountered this before. I checked the patches that Red Hat
uses to build what it calls "tripwire-1.2-3" but see nothing
there that could affect this.
Does this sound familiar to anybody?

Don't trust linuxconf (my horror story later). It's really easy to add the
thing in by hand anyway.
As root, open /etc/fstab using your fav text editor, eg vi, emacs.
You would find an entry like this
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy ext2 noauto 0 0
To allow normal user mounting, change it to
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy ext2 noauto,user 0 0
This will allow user mounting of linux (ext2) floopies. But I guess you're
more likely to want to use windows floppies. Then change it to
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy vfat noauto,user 0 0
cheers

The other day I posted asking for help with a sound problem, in which
sound would stop working for no apparent reason and only return upon a
reboot. I looked on Deja after no one responded (I know, wrong order).
It seems quite a few other people have had this problem too, with no

to immediately bring back sound. I'd be interested to know if this

This is only moderately tricky, but there are several steps.
1. Find and install the sendmail source stuff; you will need to
end up with a batch of files in /usr/lib/sendmail-cf. How to do this
depends
a great deal on which distribution you have access to. You will also
need
to have the m4 preprocessor installed; mine is in /usr/bin/m4
2. in /usr/lib/sendmail-cf/cf/ you should find a bunch of *.mc files.
Choose
one that has OSTYPE(`linux') in the first few lines, to use as a
starting point.
(Mine is named redhat.mc). Add the following lines to this, just above
the
spot where HACKS(...) begin to appear.
define(`LOCAL_RELAY')
MASQUERADE_AS(mydomain.net)
MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(mydomain.net)
FEATURE(masquerade_envelope)
3. Following the directions in /usr/lib/sendmail-cf/README, run m4 to
generate
a sendmail.cf file (your choice of names), and then TEST IT using the
sendmail -bt option.
4. I think I also needed to create the file /etc/sendmail.cw which
contains
the various names by which my server should be known to sendmail. I have
two lines in this file: the ONE TRUE NAME for the host (its A record,
per DNS),
and mydomain.net, in your terms.

Subject: New kernel -old sysmap?
Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 16:45:31 -0400
Hello,
here's another little issue I ran into the other day. I have
RH6.0 installed and I got, configured, and installed kernel 2.2.9. Then
_sometimes_ when i boot it ,the boot process fails and complains that
the Systemmap has the wrong kernel version (2.2.5-15 as supplied in RH)
That's correct, sometimes it fails and sometimes it doesn't. Not the
kind of behavior I expect from a computer. ~8^0)
Now, cp ing System.map-2.2.5-15 to System.map-2.2.9 doesn't
help. So I dumped the copy. I can't find explicit references to
"2.2.5-15" inside the file as it's largely hex or whatever, and I can't
edit it. I haven't made a symlink to System.map-2.2.5-15 for 2.2.9 as
the kernel version # disparity seems to be the problem. There is a
symlink "System.map" -> System.map-2.2.5-15 in my /boot. I don't want to
remove that, do I? There is also a binary file "map" which is mentioned
in lilo.conf, and I can tell it does reflect the changes to the
systemmap since there are regular text references to the new Linux
images. I can't find any reference to generating a new System.map in
the kernel HOWTO, so if you know what I am not doing right, please say.
I mean I could delete vmlinuz symlink to 2.2.5-15, and delete the
System.map symlink, but then supposing the new kernel panics?
Thanx
