After WWII, yes. Before that, you were NOT a "superpower".
Your country was the only one in the northern hemishpere that was NOT

therefore, you had plenty of money to put elsewhere.

The only countries that really BENEFITTED from the war were Germany and the

Normally there are 3 disks delivered with the 3Com NICs. On one of these
ist a tool called 3c50xcfg.exe. With this tool you can test and configure
your NICs. You simply have to boot DOS on your machine (if possible).

Been there and done several permutations of that. Connect using your
favorite text terminal program and record the prompts. Demon internet
is, wiht the things in [..] general omitted from the trigger strings,

[l]ogin: <your name here>
[Pa]ssword: <your secret here>
[Pr]otocol: ppp

then start talking ppp. My current ISP is
ogin: <my name>
ssword: <my password>

then start sending LCP requests. They use livingston portmasters and a
(linux) radius server. IT has changed about twice in quite a few years.

Although several solutions are possible the usual method is to use some
sort of scripting language (shell script and perl are probably the most
popular but use whatever you like) and parse the output of ps in
some simple-minded way. Extracting a field with sed of awk really and
getting into a shell variable is not exactly rocket science.

(Having said that something along the lines of "Learning the bash shell"
and a good book on sed and awk helps a lot. ORA will happily sell you both
and so will various other people.)

Find the process id of the program associated with /dev/dsp and use the
kill command to kill the application. Like below:

fuser -v /dev/dsp [this will give the id of the program using it]

kill xxxx [x's represent the process id]

That should do it.

Sorry if you already read about it many times, but I tried almost
everything I saw on USENET about this topic, and failed...

I got this WesternDigital 9GB disk.
Windows fdisk says it's only 8GB, but I know about the 1024 cylinder
problem, OK.

I reserved with FIPS 2GB to Win98, and went to RedHat5.2 install

No matter what I do in DiskDruid, I can't go beyond "L" at LILO boot,
 -> geometry problem (LILO-HOWTO).
>From the floppy it boots OK, anyway.
I tried making a /boot (in /hda5, it seems to me), but no way.
I put "linear" in lilo.conf, but no way.

HOW can I put a boot partition inside the damned 1024cyl limit?
(By the way, diskdruid does not tell you where it creates its
partitions,
just how big they are).

Thank you for any help

Subject: Please HELP: sending email from RH6.0
Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 09:22:37 -0400

Hi,

I have just installed RH6.0
I have a PPP account (dynamic IP) with my university which is working.

I can send emails with netscape using the mail server of the university
(SMTP).

I want to be able to send email from my computer to my university
account with the "mail" program (not netscape). Basically, I want my
computer to connect PPP automatically and then send me the (dynamic) IP
address so that I can log on it from the university.

I read the Mail-HOWTO (twice, went through the "Linux Network
Administrators' Guide", through the BIND documentation, through
Networking-Overview-HOWTO.

I still can't figure it out !

What should I do? Do I need to give a name to my computer (other than
localhost), a domain (other than localdomain) ? How do I do this ?

Please help.
I am willing to summarize answers for those interested or even to
propose a draft of a new introductary section for the mail-HOWTO (with
all due respect to the author, it seems to me this is missing).

Hi,

Have an i7000 and it works very well with Linux, with the following
caveats:

1. Yes, you do have to "downgrade" the BIOS to 0.6 to get X working
2. You will need a patched X server
3. The sound is not supported, except by OSS's beta commercial drivers,
and they are still beta
4. Some flakyness around power management, particularly to do with
PCMCIA ethernet (I have the 3Com 575 CardBus)

You will get most of the help you need from:
http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/ thanks to Steve Hsieh.

All in all, I'm happy with the machine. The 15" screen is a joy, and
once the sound is sorted it will be great.

Hope this helps.

You won't need to do that if you have the "defaultroute" option set for
the pppd. You can set this in the /etc/ppp/options file.

I used to be a Berkeley mail guy too. Then I discovered mutt and
haven't looked back. Mutt will actually allow you to change
the From: line based on which mail file you are reading (and a
whole lot more...).

They are not. My ISP for example runs everything on UNIX.

Is it so difficult to distinguish PAP and CHAP ?

Mine does not fully support, but has a lot of info and scripts to get
you going. Then again, I live in the Netherlands, so I don't think it's
useful for you :)

Hell yeah, everybody should, but the problem is trained personnel.
So all you new linux hackers can get really good jobs in a couple
of months if all goes well ;)

Uhm, isn't all the fun about linux the figuring out yourself ? I mean,
yes it was nice to get scripts from my ISP, but I thank the gods that
they didn't work the first time, so I studied them and *understand*
them now, so I can fix my shit when something fucks up.
