Hmm... in the process of backing up and restoring my system, I
seem to have lost a lot of the file permissions. Now when any
user but root tries to start X, I get

Fatal server error:
xf86OpenConsole: Server must be running with root permissions
You should be using Xwrapper to start the server or xdm.
We strongly advise against making the server SUID root!

I think I'm running a 'plain vanilla' X installation (with source
downloaded from xfree86.org) so its already being run with Xwrapper
or xdm, if that's the stock installation.l

How can I figure out what file's permissions are wrong?

ifconfig ppp0 |grep inet ? theres a better way using awk, but I cant
remember it.

I'm not sure because I haven' tried installing xfstt on my system since
I installed Red Hat 6, but I think the incorporation of an X font server
into XFree86 3.3.3 may have put the kabosh on xfstt (see the "FontPath"
entry in a recent /etc/X11/XF86Config file). If I'm wrong on this,
would somebody PLEASE tell me so. I would like to use True Type fonts
in Linux, but have no idea how to do it under the recent release of X.

Unfortunately, as several people have pointed out, this does not give

Mike
this reply comes from another newbie at linux. Worked till 5 am one night to
install the darn thing, but had problems with monitor - this will probably
be your biggest woe at the onset. Read smart (not just carefully - there is
a lot of things that are likely to confuse one) the instructions how to
install - make sure you DON'T create boot from hd on your main hd (I used
secondary hd and after being intuitive linux screw me up by redoing mbr to
linux from my main - WIN98 - hd. Enter 'floppy' for boot when asked) But
fixed it by booting the system with boot 98 diskette, and run CDrom support
etc etc then fdisk /MBR. Now I can boot to linux from floppy or regular boot
gives me win98.
Few commands - dos like - will be helpful to learn, but you'll get the idea
soon enough. I needed about 1 mb hd space to install their suggested default
package. After installation and login type 'startx' and you're in
windoze-like desktop. There are many drivers you'll have to get from the net
(sound, modem, etc..) I wish one could install and configure hardware from
the desktop, but still haven't found the way (it's done from dos-like
environment in YAST install program that comes with package.) This is still
in infancy, but I think it's going to take off. Good luck, Tom in Toronto,
very much newbie at this.

I guess you need to switch the parameters around. The first file should
be the one you link to (it already exists), the second file is the link
you want to create:
ln -s /home/gergo/myfile /home/gergo/mylink

mkdir.

You can also find it on the distribution CD if you have that. Also, there
is a dos utility---it may be called rawrite or something similar---which
comes with the distribution and allows you to make disk copies using dos.

I have naming working fine, but I had to use actual numbers....

The only problem I have now is that it takes 1 - 2 minutes for my Sun to

that there is a mount/export option that I can set, but have yet to find

Any takers there?

Hi !
I am a Linux newbie and need your assistance in one matter.

Let me first state the facts of the case. I have a TCP-IP dial up connection
to the internet with a local ISP here. I am currently using kmail (the mail
client that comes packaged with KDE). I think that it is
prudent to configure sendmail to get and send my mail. One reason is that I am
right now somewhat bored with KDE and want to shift to WindowMaker(which I
already have). Therefore, I will not have to configure and reconfigure each
time I move my GUI if can get pine (really the best mail client that I have
used) working. I do not mind the absence of graphics frills : it is robust and
"portable").

Accordingly, I configured my sendmail.cf file. (I am using the domain name
of my ISP (ch1.dot.net.in) in the sendmail.cw
file._
Details of what I want to realise :
I have a single email account ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
and multiple user accounts on the local machine. My dream is to set up a mail
system that will will accept mail from each user and queue it (something that
it does imperfectly right now.) and when using fetchmail, it uses some filters
to redirect all the messages to respective users. Currently, the DM entry is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and the DS entry is ch1.dot.net.in (in the sendmail.cf
file).
When I queue an email from root it gets entered as originating from
[EMAIL PROTECTED](user x gets queued as [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
I want all these users to use the single email id : [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  How do I fix
this ? Related problem : whenever I do a mailrun (see the file
attached as an addendum), I connect to the mailservers of the people that I am
sending emails to . This is extremely wasteful of my time. Is there some way
that I can dump these to the local SMTP server of my ISP (ch1.dot.net.in 25) ?
(the way kmail does). Fetchmail works OK though the filtering is not yet in
place.

Please guide me about the way it can be done.

Thanks in advance,
Madhusudan Singh.

I want to backup , directly to its scsi controller
it takes 1hr to backup 10GB.

When I connect the DLT to the second linux box, it takes
3 hours to backup the same..

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas how to speed it up??

I'm using the following tar command to back it up.

tar -s -p -b 20 -cvf second.linuxbox.com:/dev/st0 /

Both are using a 3C905B.. rshd has been replace by ssh..

in Makefile:
 TOPDIR= .... echo $$pwd ...
HPATH = $TOPDIR/include
FINDPATH=$HPATH/asm $HPATH/linux $HPATH/scsi $HPATH/net

HOSTCC = gcc

(seems ok, right ?!?)
I went into mkdep.c and fully qualified the #includes and gcc found
most of them, but then other src files were not. What am I missing
here?

Is my problem w/ gcc or make, or ... uh... my brain?

This is my 1st 'manual' kernel compile... the term 'crash course' has
new meaning to me...

Thanks for ANY help!!!!!!

Subject: Resize linux partition w/ Partition Magic!!
Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 01:03:00 +0800

Hi, I am a new linux user, using RH 6.0:

Recently, I have resized my linux partition with Partition Magic 4.
After that, I can no longer boot into my linux partition without the use
of linux floppy boot disk. I can dual boot my machine before using the
PQ4 to resize my linux partitioin. I have NT installed and use NT OS
loader to daul boot my machine. If I use the NT OS loader to boot into
linux, it hangs on the prompt: "LI" and nothing goes on. Well, my linux
works fine if I use the floppy to boot in!! Any ideas to fix the
problem? Pls

Thx for you help.

Hilton:

Caldera's Open Linux 2.2, actually can be installed from Win98. It will
automatically seek out space on your hard drive, create the required
partitions, and install Linux as a dual-boot setup! About the only thing
you have to do is answer a few questions regarding your video, and mouse.

I had a rather pessimistic attitude about this, so a co-worker watched me do
it, rather carelessly I must admit, and it worked perfect!

It sounds kinda like xisp. Xisp has a nice user interface and you enter all
the info right there (user name, passwd, dns, gateway, connection speed,
etc. No scripts to configure manually. When it dials, it displays what it's
doing.

I wouldn't expect it to be. Do you know of specific things that are
unsupported?

X serving only needs TCP/IP, which I'm sure is implemented by now. And
the GNU website says that the XFree86 project now officially supports
the Hurd, so that point isn't valid. I can't comment on PPP, though.

I'm wondering, what kind of applications would be practical for the Hurd
yet unpractical for Linux?
