IF you really want a windows jingle nothing really matches "The

Robbie Williams really comes nowhere close to the level of pain

some of which is illegal, plain and simple, in the UK).

Subject: Where is $PATH set in RH 6.0?
Date: Wed, 07 Jul 1999 22:12:03 -0700

I have recently installed RedHat 6.0. One small problem I am having is
that the $PATH environment variable is a little absurd:

> echo $PATH
/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/bruce/Pytho
n-1.5.2:/home/bruce/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/bruce/Python-1.5.2:/home/bruce/
bin

(manually re-entered, but hopefully correct)

The only places I have found where PATH is set are in /etc/profile:

PATH="$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin"

and in .bash_profile:

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/Python-1.5.2:$HOME/bin

What else am I missing? How do I set up a clean PATH?

Thanks for any pointers,

Hi-

I just wrote this program called NTPowerd. It is a WinNT/9x program that
will properly shutdown an NT/9x machine if it is notified of a power failure
from a Linux machine running powerd. This is really only usefull if you have
a NT and a Linux machine on the same UPS and want them to shutdown
automatically when the power fails. (Which is my situation) This is only the
fifth C program I've written, the second Win32 C program and the first
program to do tcp/ip stuff so don't expect it to be a perfect program. All I
can say is, "works for me". For more information see this quick web page I
just wrote up at
http://www.brianweb.dyn.ez-ip.net/~brian/ntpowerd/
It would be really nice if someone experienced in Win32 programming could
look this over and tell me what they think. Also I was wondering if I should
try to get an announcement in c.o.l.a. It's not a Linux program, but it is
used with a Linux program. I really just want some opinions on my program.
It's the first program I've written that I've decided to release to the
public so I'm kinda new at this.

Thanks for any advice/help

I _know_ this is a lame question, but I'm not affraid to admit that I'm
still a beginner.

I just installed RH6 and Gnome was the default Xwindows GUI. I switched to
AfterStep (because I like it), but I noticed that there isn't a nice easy
(graphical) way to switch it back to Gnome.

How to I manually edit the Xwindows environment to reflect the fact that I'd
like the X Server to load Gnome instead of AfterStep?

Thanks!

In the lilo.conf file, enter two lines like these:

restricted

You may seriously want to reconsider changing root's shell away
from a Bourne-compatible shell. There are still some things that do
depend on this, and in the long run you'll be better off knowing both of
the major shell varients (Bourne and C).

If lilo has been configured using the "restricted" option, than
there is a password listed in /etc/lilo.conf that is required to boot
with *any* options passed manually. I certainly hope this isn't the same
as the root password on any system.

The other possibility about "boot single" is that the
distribution in question may use sulogin as the last rc script; this is
common practice in System V-style Unices. This will require the real
root password.

In either case, init should try to launch /bin/sh when running
in single-user mode. Try running strings on /sbin/init and look for the
string "sh".

Lastly, to answer the topic of the original poster: leave root
with a Bourne-compatible shell - there are some things that depend on
it. You can always exec another shell, but it's better to become
conversant in both major variants of shells. It's a lot like driving a
car; some people prefer an automatic transmission, others a manual. If
you want to be able to drive the overwhelming majority of cars, you need
to be able to drive either.

It shouldn't be a problem. Are you using XFree86 3.3.3.1? Which server?

I'm running the XF86_Mach64 server on my Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop with the
ATI Rage LT Pro 8MB. I use the VESA FB stuff to set the thing into
1024x768 mode at boot time, and I have the X server using the same mode.
Console switches are quite painless, mostly because they don't have to
change modes.

Sorry if this message shows up twice. I'm having some networking
troubles.
But, to the point at hand .....

I have a Sound Blaster AWE64 card and am running RH6.0
There are alot of things I can't do with the sound, such as
1) play *.au files off of webpages, 2) play the *.wav files in the
desktop settings directories, 3) get audio out of Real Player
(though video works fine).

When I try 1), I get an error window saying "Can't open
/dev/dsp". 2) gives silence. 3) gives an error window that
says something like "Can't open sound device. May be
locked by aonother user."

i have tried using the fuser routine to see what might be
locking up /dev/dsp, but it just returns nothing.

I appreciate any ideas you might have about this.

Try this.

Boot from the Win98 floppy and enter FDISK /MBR to rewrite the master
boot record.

Run FDISK again and repartion the hard drive as you want it.

Install Win98 first then Linux.

Thanks to all of you guys for the help!!! After 're-installing' these c
libs, make dep worked, but a few files were still not located. make bzImage
ran for a long time, then bombed with little indication as to why.

Well, I booted to my Caldera Lisa / fdd install img, and formatted by little
300MB hdd. To make a LONG story short I got base installed, recompiled
kernel with ipmasq support, etc. My LAN
(http://www.awtechnologies.net/mynet.html) has Internet access! There is
still some strangeness going on: many modules (that I did NOT select in make
config) attempt, and fail, to load. Everything that I intended to install
works fine, but from every filesystem supported to every 3com nic driver and
everything in between, all of these modules 'fail to load'.

Oh, well... my wife and I have shared access to the Net, and I have a new
challenge!

I would expect the issue to be resolved over the next year or perhaps
2 years at worst, particularly as 64 bit platforms become more
commonplace.

Furthermore, it looks like the relevant code *is* getting into GLIBC
2.1, which means that it shouldn't take infinite time for it to become
usable at user level.
