It is in the SuSE distro
Perhaps you can find it at ftp.suse.com
then SuSE6.1 or 6.0 and the in the directory n1 or n2 perhaps even in a
but it's a matter of loooking I'm afraid.

Have you tried yahoo or altavista yet? by the way It has nothing to do
with the sendmail version .

Hi,

since I had difficulties in accessing our network, I wrote a short
section about accessing files (ncpfs) and printing under a Novell
network on my homepage. It's easy stuff, Linux experts will probably
laugh at it, but a poor newbie might find it useful... Hope it helps.

Local or state run schools are still better, though not ideal
in that regard. That's just sign of compromise. Like libertarian
standard, vouchers. Vouchers are not perfectly libertarian,
they are kind of compromise.

Subject: Simple command won't run in Crontab script
Date: Wed, 04 Aug 1999 15:46:29 +0000

This one has me stumped.

I've installed a Linux file and print server for a client. The server
also runs Informix SE. All seems to be working normally. There is a
printer on lp1 which functions normally - - i.e., one can cat a file to
the device or do "lpr filename" with no problem. The client wishes to
run a simple script out of crontab which prints a report.

Running the script ("test1") from root from within cron returns the
error message, "/usr/bin/lpr: lp: unknown printer".

We have run the script out of bash and it executes properly. It is a
very simple script. Crontab and the script contents are as follows:

**************************************************************************************************

#Cron command file
0 0 * * * cat /dev/null > /var/log/messages
1 0 * * * cat /dev/null > /var/log/wtmp
00 23 * * 1-5 /usr/Local/backup_usr >>
/usr/Local/Backup/cronlog
00 13 1 * * /usr/Local/data.ck >
/usr/agency/y.datack
00 5 * * * /usr/Local/run.report >>
/usr/Local/Backup/cronlog
00 14 * * * /usr/Local/test1 >
/usr/Local/ytest1

# test1 commands:

DBPATH=::/usr/agency:/usr/tracnet:/usr/gl:
INFORMIXDIR=/usr/informix
INFORMIXSERVER=agency
PATH="/usr/informix/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin:::/opt/kde/b
in:/
usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/Local:/usr/agency"

export PATH INFORMIXDIR INFORMIXSERVER DBPATH

cd /usr/agency

/usr/bin/lpr yfileupd.sql

******************************************************************************************************

Any ideas? By the way, we can run "cat yfileupd.sql > /dev/lp1"
successfully from within cron. It is not acceptable to the client,
however, as redirecting to the printer in that way leaves the printer
unusable for subsequent jobs. It seems our problem is with the lpr
command. We've tried "lpr -P /dev/lp1 yfileupd.sql" with no luck.

TIA,
Tim

Not really more than what can be found on the man pages. I think there's
enough info there. Maybe there's something in the LDP documents, too.

Basically typing
chmod root:root file
will change file's owner and group to root.

I think there's /etc/cron.daily directory in Redhat, from where all scripts
are run daily. There's other /etc/cron.* directories too.

A script there would look something like this:
#!/bin/sh
tar zcfv /backup/backup.tar.gz /home/foo/work/

Don't forget to set the executable bit for the script.

For a finer precision on the timing of the backups, you really have to read
cron's man page.

Eventually you will come to love man pages as detailed reference
material, but... man pages are technical reference manuals, not
tutorials. HOWTO's are tutorials, but of course they generally
exist for subjects where Linux distributions are unique among
unix varieties.

What you have to do is buy a good book on running Linux. There
are several of them out there, and certainly some of them are
specific to Red Hat distributions. Almost any good bookstore
will have one or more, and even a horrible bookstore can order
one. Check out Amazon.com on the net too.

It is hard to believe that you have actually "Checked the man
pages" as you said above, because in the case of ls it is very
easy to get this information from the man page. What is not so
clear is what best to do with the information. The -l option to
ls gives a long form printout. Originally the ls command on
UNIX was linked to several different filenames, and each caused
a different set of options to be the default. The "l" in "ls"
is for "list" (as in list the directory contents). The "s" is
for "short", "ll" would give a long form, and "la" would give
all files, even files beginning with a dot. Since the concept
of using an alias to redefine commands was introduced to the
UNIX shells the ls command has not been linked to different
names, but instead users commonly use a series of aliases,
defined in their ~/.bashrc file, to accomplish the same thing.

Here are the ones that I use:

  alias ll='/bin/ls --color -lF'
  alias la='/bin/ls --color -axF'
  alias ls='/bin/ls --color -xF'

Those are the formats that I want to see 99.99% of the times
when I use the ls command, and on the other occassions I have to
suffer using "/bin/ls -options" to get something different.

>2. Is there a CHMOD 'HOWTO' ? Is there a page/site that someone can point me
>to that explains more information about the CHMOD and perhaps CHOWN

Read the man page for chown. I believe that adding even two more words
would be wasted effort!

However, to use chmod requires that you understand permissions. Indeed,
probably in three different ways too! You will see things like,

chmod o+w fname # set write permission for "other" users

and

chmod 0644 fname # set all permissions to 0644

and

ls -l fname # see what the permissions are

All of which reference permissions in different ways. Rather
than asking anyone to write a chapter for a book to explain
that... you need a book on UNIX (almost any book on UNIX will
explain that part).

That is indeed a complex subject because there are about as many
ways to do backups as there are system admin people doing it! Any
good book on UNIX systems administration will provide you with at
least the basics. Clearly a book on Red Hat 5.2 will be more
useful than a 1984 book on System V R2.0 though! (But a 15 year old
book would indeed have a great deal of interesting information
in it, because it's all unix.)

Whoa, man... I just took a quick peek at your web site. Let me
revise slightly my comments about books. Go buy at least two or
three books on systems admin, and every book you can find on
security for 1) the Internet and 2) unix and 3) linux.

You *definitely* want to visit with the folks at O'Reilly, at
www.oreilly.com. On the left side, click on "linux", "unix"
and "security" (not necessarily in that order). They have
the absolutely *best* books available.

I think that I would like to make a general comment here
about the tenor of your argument. You are very happy to continually
throw out left right and centre references to Adam Smith, and Milton
Friedman. There are two major points here. One this kind of reference
does very little to enhance your argument. Friedman got a nobel prize
so therefore he must be right? Well no. If you want to use Adam Smiths
arguments go ahead, but present them, dont just refer to them as holy
script. Also it is clear that Adam Smith, Friedman (and Marx for that
matter) were placing their own spin on things, that what their
writings are, are an interpretation of what they see, from their moral
viewpoint which they constructed for themselves.

The second point is that you have written a lot about what
Marx said, and I am starting to think from your constant
misrepresentation of his works that you have in fact never read any
Marx. You may disagree with everything that he says, but to say that
he "created belief system consistent and closed philospically" is
really such an abrogation of what Marx wrote.

     >It has happened. Redistribution of wealth and unionization have
     >prevented the `revolution of the proletariat' envisioned by Marx.

  MK> Oh please...

MK> There was no freaking revolution. There was not even the
  MK> potential.

Which again makes the point. There have been a number of
revolutions in this and the previous century, although you may argue
over their character if you wish. If you think there was not even the
potential then you need to study the history of the luddites, the
corresponding societies, the tolpuddle martyrs, or even the general
strike, and yarrow if you want examples from this century. And thats
just in my country. Others have their own history.

What Kenneth says (hope Im attributed this to the correct
person. If not sorry) about unionisation and redestribution, or in a
nutshell reformism is I think very true. Im not sure on which side I
fall yet in deciding whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, but
none the less it has managed to temper many of the socially
disasterous affects that occured during the industrial
revolution. From a software point of view (wow relevance to the
group!) GNU and linux are interesting, in that most people who support
the idea can be split into either the revolutionairy or reformist
camps. It seems to me to be a fascinating microcosm of the social
processes that we have seem in earlier history. Which way will it turn
out? I dont know.

recognised during the boot, AND I get that message later. If its not
turned on during the boiot, then there is no way to access it later, st
simply can't be found by modprobe. Or mt for that matter. Its a PITA to
have to reboot to do a backup. Somebody? Kernel 2.2.10-ac12 BTW.

In order for that to work, you'll need a driver for the particular card.

If it's a 3C509B, compile 3c509.o into the kernel. I.e., answer "yes"
to 3C509 support in make [x]config. This particular driver probes around
on the ISA bus for 3Com's unique self-location mechanism. It's safer
to do that at boot time than to use this driver as a runtime loadable module.

If it's a 3C59x (Vortex), 3C90x (Boomerang), or 3C90xB (Cyclone, Hurricane)
compile 3c59x.c as a module or link it in. This one is safe either way,
being a PCI device. Answer yes or module to Vortex support.
(Is 3Com shipping Tornado yet? It might be 3C905D or something.
It's got the fancy wake-on-LAN router keepalive gadget in it.)

In linux-1.2 and -2.0 kernels, 3c509 was on by default. In -2.2, 3Com is
out and Intel is in. However, your installation kernel probably has them
all.

For that to work, you'll need TCP/IP in the kernel. But that's on
by default anyway.

You may have those on your Linux system. Look in /usr/doc/howto/.
Maybe even /usr/doc/howto/html/.
