This is all mildly puzzling to me. I'm running a SB16 PnP on an

after. In fact, I'm listening to a CD through it right now.

I just bought a new CD-RW and had a few question about the process of
recording cd's.

1) Can one record on a CD-RW disk in more than just session? That is,
can I record a track; stop; and then come
back at a later time and record another track on the same CD-RW disk
without writing over the first track?

2) Can the same be done for CD-R disks? Or does
the buring all have to be done in the same session?

3) Which is the best program to use for cd buring?

Thanks much,

There is not yet significant support for "MMX variations" (e.g. -
Intel MMX, AMD '3DNow') for either the Linux kernel or for XFree86.

This means that this doesn't presently represent an issue that would
"break any ties" between your selection of one distribution or
another:

- Both Red Hat and Debian use X servers from The XFree86 Project,
which means that neither has any persistent advantage from the X
  perspective;

- Both Red Hat and Debian use the same stream of Linux kernels as
managed by Linus Torvalds, again meaning "no persistent advantage;"

- Ditto for compilers like GCC and libraries like GLIBC.

There are few persistent performance issues that would cause Red Hat
to be preferable over Debian, and the same is true for most
distributions.

There is a tree utility on the Redhat cd. The install defaults to
not installing this one.. Look in the RPMS directory on the redhat CD
or their ftp site..

I think that setting up software raid in Linux for a company is a
very bad idea at this time. I have done a kernel patch in kernel
2.2.11 to stripe a couple of drives together as an experiment, but
no way would I do this on a machine used for business.

Depending upon how dead in the water your company would be if the
RAID array has problems, I'd recommend finding a company that does
this professionally. You need to decide how fault tolerant the
system needs to be, and provide for a backup mechanism that is fast
enough so that you're not backing up during high-usage times.

I know, this isn't exactly the question that you asked, but I felt
strongly about this and wanted to make sure you had taken these
factors into account. There's just so many factors to take into
account when choosing a RAID+backup solution that I'd personally
stick with proven SCSI hardware, known redundancy, hot-swapping
of bad disks and fast tape backup. You may find that backing up
250Gb of data requires a very expensive tape drive, like digital
linear tape. Scary to get it wrong!

As a note, there is a mail archive for linux kernel RAID that's
worth looking into:

http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-raid%40vger.rutgers.edu/

Good luck with your storage quest.

You are confusing GNU tar with common (or garden) tar.

Using a regular, unenhanced tar, untarring an archive that has been
created using something not too clever, like 'tar cf /dev/st0 /usr/bin'
will give you something that will _always_ untar to /usr/bin, because
of the leading slash in all the filenames, and it does't matter what
directory you are in when you try to untar it.

This is why you should always do something like this instead:

'cd / && tar cf /dev/st0 usr/bin'

Fortunately for the original poster, GNU tar will automatically strip
leading slashes off pathnames in stupidly created archives (unless you
tell it not to). SO, if your Solaris box comes with some other version
of tar, you should dump it and get GNU tar instead--problem solved.

Hi!

I tried to replace wuftpd with proftpd by doing the following:

Now it tells me there is a conflict with wuftp, which I understand very =

rpm --erase <wuftp-package>

Then finally:
rpm --install <proftp-package>
rpm --install <anonftp-package> (I tried with and without this)

I also changed the entry in inetd.conf but now every connection fails =
anyway:

ftp> open 192.168.1.177
Connected to 192.168.1.177.

:(

Trying to run the proftpd program NOT as service unveils the following:

bind() failed in inet_create_connection(): Address already in use

I understand there is a problem, but please someone tell me where =

Probably because of the reason in bold the daemon doesn't work either.

Hi

The proc man indicates that in /proc/<pid>/stat, utime is "The number of

jiffies that this process has been scheduled in user mode."

But I found 2 definitions for "jiffy" (in
http://foldoc.doc.ic.ac.uk/foldoc):

1. The duration of one tick of the computer's system clock.
2. Confusingly, the term is sometimes also used for a 1-millisecond wall

time interval.

So in the case of /proc/<pid>/stat, should I consider the first
definition or the second?

Thank you for your help

A .deb file contains some identification files and some .tar.gz

On my system, cat is in /bin. Check to see if it is there. It
is one of the most elemental utilities used in linux. /bin (on my system)
also has things like bash, mount, echo, du. See if /bin looks fairly
complete. The only other thing I can think of is that your PATH variable
doesn't include /bin when you are running sysinit. What you might do
is try editing /etc/rc.d/rc.sysint (should be a text ASCII file) and
where it says cat give it the full path name /bin/cat (assuming you have
cat in your /bin directory).

Error in startup script: ibfind:
IBSTAT = < ERR>
IBERR =  EDVR <OS Error>
    while executing
"gpib find scope "
    (file "gw.tcl" line 14)

/dev/gpib0 is 777. I don't know if there are other devices I need to
check as well.

Thanks!

This does not sound at all like a partition problem.
Maybe you have a rotten disk, or bad SCSI cables, or bad termination -
a hardware problem.

The subject of this thread is why not C++? I think it was why not for
writing an OS. Could this be the answer?
- I'm not asking rhetorically; I really want to know.
I've stayed out of this thread because I'm not that much of an expert
on C++, but I've done my share of C and assembly language programming,
including working on device drivers and the like.

A source package format offers some advantages, e.g. separating original
source from fixes/improvements, standardising the build procedure etc. This
can however be achieved without resorting to RPM.

A quick search on freshmeat results in
http://freshmeat.net/appindex/1998/03/09/889429231.html which gets you to
http://www.kiss.uni-lj.si/~k4fr0235/icewm/devel/icewm-0.9.48.src.tar.gz
(I haven't tested whether older versions are available from there too).

ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/{stable,unstable}/*/source/*/*

I have gotten messages similar to that when using hdparm trying to get 32bit
transfer w/sync, but when it resets, all is well.
