I'm not sure I entirely understand. What OS is your company's product
known to work on. Is it a Win98 program, Mac, Unix/Linux, Amiga, etc.?
Do you have the source code? Porting from one flavor of Unix to another
(including Linux) usually just involves recompiling the source, although
it may be necessary to do some recoding in particular situations. If you
are wanting to got from something else to Linux, you will definitely
need to recompile. You will also likely have to recode some sections
and may even have to use different sets of libraries and so forth,
depending on the particular language and the specific functions of
the application. For example, coding for the Windows graphics handlers
will not normally be cross-compatible with the X libraries.
Final answer: I don't know. Insufficient data.
Antryg - Cross-platform ports are a tricky subject...

I have an e-commerce program on my Apache web server, on this PC I am using
now. Index.html is at:
/home/httpd/cgi-bin/store/protected/files/index.html
Script Alias is set /cgi-bin/ /home/httpd/cgi-bin. Now, I was advised
elsewhere that given this arrangement I could probably see the index page
with http://server.dom.com/cgi-bin/store/protected/files/index.html
However, when I try this I get 'Forbidden - You don't have permisssion to
access / on this server'. Why am I forbidden? Is it a password thing or
something to do with being root? I changed to being another user and that
didn't make any difference.
Is the server.dom.com part a problem? Is that the standard way to address
your own server? Document root is /home/httpd/html

Not really. I suppose you could have a look at UMSDOS, which treats a FAT
partition like an ext2 partition by inroducing some hidden files that
contain Linux-specific info... problem is, this is kind of slow.
>Is there an optimal filesystem to share data between Linux and Windows ?
Not a filesystem per se, but "tar" will preserve information about a
file's ownership and timestamps.

This was a RedHat package you installed... the "6.1" gives it away. RH
and SuSE seem to have different names for the same libs(!) for reasons I
only barely begin to comprehend. So, try this:
# cd /usr/lib
# ln -s libstdc++.so.2.9 libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2
Then see if it works. It *might not*; I have no idea. I compiled
Knapster from source partially so I could avoid these problems. Bonne
chance.

That's "FDISK /MBR". The all-uppercase should tell you something :-)
1. Find a Win9x machine (not hard, right?)
2. insert blank floppy into said machine.
3. From a DOS prompt, FORMAT A: SYS A:
COPY C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\FDISK.EXE A:
4. Take that bootable DOS floppy and boot your machine from it.
5. FDISK /MBR
...voil, no more LILO and you can get on with your program. HTH,

Yes. Blame the silly BIOSes; mine can report up to the max. RAM capacity
of the motherboard but that capability seems to be somewhat rare.
The later 2.3 kernels use a better memory detection routine that
eliminates the need for "mem=" at boot time even if your BIOS is being
silly. It'll be in 2.4 for sure. Of course, no one knows when 2.4 is
actually going to be released, but the mem= hackaround works and you only
have to do it once. Ah well.

Hmm, sounds like your serial port is one of the older models (16450 UART
or even older) and you haven't done the optimizations you can do with
hdparm. Try:
# hdparm -u 1 /dev/hda
which sets the "unmask interrupts" flag--then the kernel can leave the HD
hanging and go service a serial port interrupt if necessary. *Most*
systems can handle this without barfing, and if it works, it'll increase
HD throughput by about 10-20% as well. This may destroy all data on the
drive and cause all your hair to fall out; you have been warned!
Other hdparm parameters to try are "-m 16", "-c 1", and "-d 1". Read the
man page to find out what they do; put 'em in /sbin/init.d/boot.local if
they work. (That's /etc/rc.d/rc.local for RH people.)

partitions last month with no problems? Took about 15 minutes, but that
was it. This was the full version of Partition Magic 4.0, not the
slightly crippled version that comes free with Caldera's distro, and
earlier versions of P-Magic might not have this ability. Ah well.

sox might've come with your distribution; "which sox" to see if it's
installed. Its purpose in life is to convert/mess with audio files.
Unfortunately, the interface isn't all that intuitive; read the man page

C++? Hmm. This works in C:
#include<stdlib.h>
...
system("clear");
the ncurses package is the de facto standard for doing terminal I/O.
There are probably C++ wrappers for it somewhere. Don't know where; I
tend to use C for the non-graphical stuff.

Replace all their ~/.xinitrc files with this:
#!/bin/bash
exec /usr/bin/netscape
Nothing to it. These users will have netscape launch automatically upon
login, and when netscape exits, they'll get logged out. Oh yes, make sure
you chown and chmod those .xinitrc files so that they can't write to them.
Wouldn't want them slipping though security, would we? Though letting
users execute netscape on a Linux box is a recipe for trouble when it
gobbles up all the memory...

Subject: ,,~~SAY A PRAYER FOR THE INNOCENT VICTIMS OF BLACK VIOLENCE AND
LAWLESSNESS!~~...
Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 04:02:08 GMT
It's interesting to see how selective the black community can be when it comes to what
they get outraged about.
-
A couple of recent examples:
-
1) A four-year-old white boy was dragged 4 miles to his death by a black man when the
automobile his mother was driving got car-jacked. The child was attached to a
seatbelt, hanging out the side of the car, clearly visible to the perpetrator. The
mother frantically pleaded for the life of her son to no avail. Some other motorists
watching this horror unveil eventually subdued the driver. According to bystanders and
police, the man was completely remorseless.
-
Tell me something... How is this man any less of an animal than the 3 rednecks that
dragged a black man to his death behind a pickup truck last year? So, where is all the
public outrage and cries of racism here?
-
2) Yesterday, a black man went on a firing rampage, shooting 5 white people - killing
2 and leaving 1 in critical condition with a bullet lodged in his brain. When asked
why he did it, he told a neighbor and police that he just wanted to kill as many white
people as he could. Again, completely remorseless.
-
Again, where is all the public outrage and cries of racism here?
-
Whenever incidents of this type occur, there is a defining silence coming from the
black community. The double standard that seems to apply, suggests that it's OK for
black criminals to victimize whites but not the other way around and has led to a well
deserved lack of credibility for black's when it comes to criminal justice.
-
Americans (law-abiding blacks and whites alike) have finally decided not to allow this
double standard and racial bias to infect the judicial system any further and this was
at the rudiment of the judge's decision to move the Diallo trial out of The Bronx.
-
And since no discussion on this subject would be complete without a comment on the
Diallo verdict;
-
For the record, I didn't agree with this verdict. At a minimum, I think these cops
should have been charged with extreme reckless indifference to human life and they
should have been punished.
-
This was not murder however... It was incompetence... If these cops set out to murder
this guy, then would have done it quietly in a back alley or other such place and they
would have quietly gotten away with it.
-
The real culprit here is the culture of young, black, African American males, which
engender an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness wherever they congregate!
-
These neighborhoods to which the NYPD Street Crimes Unit are assigned, are some of the
most dangerous in New York City. Kids pull handguns on cops all the time and many
policemen have been shot, killed and maimed.
-&
In this highly charged, hair-trigger environment, no cop is going to risk his or her
life if he or she believes someone is about to pull out a gun.
-
No degree of sensitivity training, weapons regulations, political pressure, threats,
or other feel-good expedients is going to change a thing until the black community
starts to take responsibility for their children and their communities.
-
In a strange sort of way, one might consider the final outcome of this trial payback
for the O.J. verdict.
-
-
-
-
-
