I would be glad and pleased to get answers to any of my following
problems. NOTE-I am a newbie user of WINLINUX 2000.

Cd recording programs need cdparanoia, mkisofs, cdrecord. Where can I get
these. Or the path if they are already integrated in winlinux 2000 as I
could not find them with find utility.

I need a program to play mpeg video files. I downloaded many and most of
them work in console mode with commands, but I need a graphics player.
Any reccomendation of what program to download.

My AddRemove programs or Kpackager always unpacks to the /folder. What
should I do to make it unpack in diff directory by default. And what does
all the path options in kpackager mean.  After installing the programs;
where are the files usually located with which I can run it.

I tried to install QT 2.02 version after which the X server does not start
and does not recognize any password to enter even as root. My
installation did not show any error. Am I not to use it?

Hi,

I just bought an ORB 2.2Gb external *parallel port* drive.

I want to use this also in Linux.

How do I mount it in Linux? Right now, I'm using Mandrake 7.0 dist.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Ken Mort)

Linux and/or LILO seem to be pretty smart in
finding the right system map if you are careful
in naming you new kernels. Lets say your original
kernel was 2.2.12-20 then you will see a system map
named System.map-2.2.12-20 and if you compile a new
kernel that is 2.2.14 then just copy the new system
map to /boot/System.map-2.2.14 and it will load the
proper symbols. If lilo.conf has an entry for you
old kernel then when you boot the old one it will
find System.map-2.2.12-20 and load the old symbols.
This works similar to how it finds the right directory
for the modules.
I have many different kernels and corresponding
System.map.??.??.??-????? files in my /boot directory
and everything works fine.
Let me know if something need more explaining and/or
and explanation of how to change the kernel extraversion
(that's the -20 in the first system map).

You need to be more precise about what you hope to accomplish. Samba is a
server on Linux that makes the Linux box look like a Windows computer in
terms of file and printer sharing. As such, Samba definitely does *NOT*
obviate the need for DAVE; in fact, if you run Samba, you'd use it in
conjunction with DAVE.

If you want the Linux box to function as a file and print server for the
Macintosh, you should take a look at Netatalk, which is to Macs what Samba
is to Windows -- it lets you use AppleTalk networking protocols to share
files and printers on a Linux box on an AppleTalk network. You can't
access Mac files from the Linux box via Netatalk, though. If you need
documentation on Netatalk, check http://www.umich.edu/~rsug/netatalk/ and
http://thehamptons.com/anders/netatalk/. I also cover it in my book,
_Linux: Networking for Your Office_ (http://www.rodsbooks.com/network/).

Yes. Several ways, in fact, some of which at least *SHOULD* work under
Windows, as well:

1) Use Apple's DiskCopy utility to create an uncompressed HFS image file.
Copy that file to the PC and burn it *AS AN IMAGE FILE* to the CD.
You'll then be able to read it on the Mac, but not on the PC (unless
you've got an HFS driver loaded -- Linux has this, but you need to dig
up third-party HFS drivers for Windows).
2) Use an Apple CD-R-creation program to create a mixed-mode HFS/ISO-9660
image file. Copy this to the PC and burn it, as in #1. You'll be able
to read the CD from just about anything.
3) Use Netatalk to share a Linux filesystem. Copy the files you want to
appear on CD to that shared filesystem. Use the Linux program mkhybrid
to create a mixed-mode HFS/ISO-9660 image file (possibly including
Joliet and/or Rock Ridge support, as well). Burn this file to CD-R. You
can then read it in just about any OS. You'll need to use the correct
mkhybrid options to get it to recognize the creator codes, resource
forks, etc., stored in the Netatalk-shared filesystem.

There may be additional possibilities. These are the three that spring to
mind, though. I've done #1 and #3, but not #2 (I lack the required
software).

You can't print because the print daemon died. To restart it, log in as
root, and type 'lpd' at the prompt. The print daemon must be running when you
try to print or you'll get that error message saying it cannot start the
daemon.
As far as the internet connection, I suppose there could be several reason
why it isn't working. It might be a problem with your internet service
provider. If you can log in, but Netscape can't find anything, sometimes its a
problem with DNS settings either locally or with your ISP.
If a lot of stuff isn't working and you don't know what to do, you can
always reboot the machine which will restart everything that might have
accidently been shut down.

In the same vein, I would highly recommend Phat Linux
(http://www.phatlinux.com). It's what I'm using now to test out the
system and hardware compatability before my next upgrade (when I'll
install on a real Linux partition).

Winlinux bombed on me when I tried out its "final beta" several months
ago (display driver problems). I've tried several times to download its
final release, but for the past month the server's been too busy (ftp
message says 530 user limit is reached). Also, Winlinux would
immediately launch into X/Kde, and since that didn't work, there was no
way of fiddling with configuration files. The situation may have
changed, but, as I mentioned, I can never get a crack at downloading it.

I hope the original poster realizes that lilo can only pass parameters to
kernel features which are "compiled-in". If using a modularized kernel,
those parameters must be put in /etc/conf.modules.

I have a Windows Fat32 partition on my computer along with Linux

am not usually working as root, I cannot delete add or modify any files
to this partition without issuing super-user command. I have tried doing

which /mnt/DOS_hda1 belongs to. It says the permission was successfully
changed but when I do 'ls -l' it is still "drwxr-xr-x" instead of
"drwxrwxr-x". I have tried chmod with 775 or whatever it is and it also
says it has changed successfully when it hasn't. I have tried with the
partition mounted and with it not mounted with the same results. 'chown'
does not work either; it says something about cannot perform operation

There is really no need to mess with any files on the Windows 2000 side of
the computer. I currently run
Win2000 and Linux at the same time. All I did was install Windows first and
then Linux. Lilo had no problem booting the Windows 2000 partition, thus I
didn't do any configuring of the NT boot loader.

Under Linux, this is dependent on whether or not the end-user has the
window manager/desktop environment set up to do the following things:

1. automatically mount CDs inserted in the drive
2. look for a file called "autorun" or "autorun.bat" and try to execute
that file as a shell script when a new CD is mounted

Both 1 and 2 have to be true for "autorun" to work. There's an option in
GNOME to do 2, but I forget whether the default file to run was "autorun"
or something else. Also, I believe the end-user can change the name of
the default file to execute. (autorun under LoseXX annoyed me quite a
bit; automount can be annoying on a Linux box--don't expect your users
to appreciate what you're doing here.) HTH,

xanim (free beer) or mtv (shareware). mtv is better. Again, see
freshmeat.net for the downloads. Don't expect stellar performance, since
you're not running off a real ext2 partition.

Read The Fine Manual for the KDE program; see if your questions are
answered there. Better yet, use tar/unzip from the command line; you'll
get more control and learn more. When you do a "make install" from a
source tarball, the programs are almost always installed in
/usr/local/bin, which should always be in your $PATH. Programs installed
from RPMs tend to end up in /usr/bin somewhere.

What do *you* think? Either there are bugs in Troll Tech's latest release
(quite possible) or there's some odd incompatibility with your distro.
rpm -e it, then reinstall qt-1.44 and possibly the X-server. HTH,
