I finally found a driver for the CJ1000 sitting on my desk, but it's not an
official driver, IMNSHO the CJ1000 is not officially a printer either. I
haven't had much luck with modern Linuxes on the 486s anyway, I would have
to dig out an old Slackware disk.

I'm not sure from your description whether or not you can
boot your Storm Linux from the disk with your present configuration.
>From what you say I would assume not since one can't boot using
lilo if one puts its boot loader on the second disk. I've
just told someone how to run lilo using Tom's root/boot disk,
but that won't do you any good if you want to preserve being
able to boot NT. If you can boot some version of Linux, then
you might be able to do what you want by mounting your second
disk root system, using dd to copy the kernel to a floppy and
then use rdev to set the root file system to the one on your
second disk. You should also be able to do the same thing
using the installation boot floppy by entering something like
linux root=/dev/hdbX
where X is the number of your root system on that disk.
Of possibly
vmlinuz root=/dev/hdbX
Finally, if your Storm Linux has mkbootdisk, it may be
possible to use Tom's root/boot disk to mount it and run it
from the second disk after mounting its root file system.

Also look at /etc/isapnp.conf if it is there. Or you might

The generic kernel provided by RedHat 6.1 certainly supports
FAT32. You may be doing something wrong. Did you try to
make your own kernel of something?

You should be able to do this using linuxconf. But you can
also do it using the command chkconfig. See its man page
and study it carefully. If you just want to stop (start)
a service temporarily use
/etc/rc.d/init.d/service_name stop (start)
To check the status, use
/etc/rc.d/init.d/service_name status

I haven't studied your specific question, but let me raise
another point. I have the same drive, but I use tar to backup.
I've found the mt command cannot place me at the appropriate
tape archive for recovering something if I put multiple archives
on the same tape. (The same thing happens on a Travan SCSI
tape drive we had.) But if I do an
mt -f /dev/nht0 weof
between the archives, then I can position the tape using twice
the requisite number of skips.
Have you checked if the same thing happens for you?

Also, once you have done the modload of snd-pcm-oss and OSS sound works,
if the mixer you are using is gmix (the Gnome mixer), you don't need to
use the amixer commands. Gmix knows how to unmute; it has mute buttons
on it.

I've used 'electric ears' (found at the GNOME website) to record from a line-in,
and it seems to work well...it offers WAV recording and simple editing, but that is
it. As far as WAV clean-up goes, I haven't seen anything for linux. Seems like
advanced editing and cleanup features for audio are, at this point, non-existent
for linux. However, apps that do such things are in the works. As for mp3, GRIP
is a nice frontend for the cdparanoia ripper and bladeenc encoder (other encoders
are also supported). Bladeenc is a great encoder and although text-based, is easy
to use. Check out freshmeat.net for details

You're probably one of the lucky people who had the old system
grandfathered. They don't do static IPs anymore. Sympatico HSE now uses
PPPoE [PPP over Ethernet] to assign dynamic IP addresses. At last report, it
was a bitch to set up under Linux -- and Sympatico only officially supports
Windows and MacOS, natch. It's also notoriously unstable. I'll also bet you
have one of the old 2.2 mbps ADSL connections. Today's version of HSE gives
you 980 kbps... on a good day...

Thanks guys for your reply. What I did was following the the procedure of INSTALL in
the alsa package directly: I put those alises of snd-card-0, etc in my

modules including via686a, snd-mixer, snd-midi, etc. No oss stuff cos I didn't include
those in the modules.conf. Shall I include them and use oss instead? I will try your

Executables have a text (code) segment that contains all the functions in a
program, a data segment that contains all static data, an an uninitialized
data segment (called the bss, and yes that stands for what you might guess)
and a symbol table. The nm program is used to generate a map of the symbol
table (function and variable names and their addresses). The strip command is
used to strip the symbol table off an executable.
System.map would be useful for debugging the kernel, might be required by the
ps command and the /proc pseudo file system. I really don't know for sure
because in the 2+ years I've been using linux, it's never crashed. :)
Perhaps a real hacker could elaborate.

I'm interested in Win4Lin, but find that lack of sound
support is a big deal.
Primarily, I know some people who think they need to use
Windows or a Mac, and won't consider Linux unless they have
assurances that they can run all the programs they might
be interested in. 3D support isn't an issue, yet.
Does anyone know when sound support will be added?

Why can I play audio Cd's in KDE, but can not in Gnome? Both are set up to
detect
the cdrom. I am using Mandrake 7.0(air)
thanks, Robert

I checked with the SuSE Hardware base ( since I am running SuSE and
there is only a 1211 (no _tx_) 100Mbit a driver is listed as rtl8139....
Could it be that you need to compile your kernel and use the RealTeK
8139 driver..
I checked with make xconfig and the above Card is listed in
Western-Digital as 8139 support try that if it works :-)
sorry I wish I could help you more :-/
if you need help in compiling the kernel just let me know :-)
