Hi,

I have a certain directory on my Windows partition.
The Windows partitions are generally accessible only
to root. How can I set up my ftp or http server, so
that when I'm running Linux, files from that AND ONLY
THAT Windows directory were readable to anonymous?

Also, files in Windows partition have spaces in their
names. Should that be a problem?

Thanks a bunch!

The "acct" file is missing (but may not be needed). Check the contents of
"filter" to see where it wants to get the smbclient information from (the
username, printername and password) and make sure that file exists. "Filter"
should be a shell script.

The ownership and group of the files shouldn't matter as long as they are
readable by the appropriate uid/gid.

Simpliest way is to open up the case and clip the leads into the PC speaker.

What's the best way to setup internal email on a linux box for an intranet

there?

OK...I can connect to two printers that I have been trying to
setup as remote smb printers using smbclient. I can get them
listed as available shares using the smbclient -L switch.

Connecting to them directly with smbclient and then trying to
put a file or print a file fails. I DO get a file transfer,
or so it seems, in that I get a bitrate for data transfer.
I do not get any printer output. I can scan the printers
with nmap and see them up as well. I can print to these
networked printers from windoze 98 too on the same laptop
that I am running linux on.

Now I am really cornfused. Both are postscript-compatible
printers (one is a Phaser Tek350 color printer and the other
is an HP laserwriter 16). I have tried using the basic
postscript printer driver under printtool when setting it up
and I have also left that field blank so that it is automagically
set (usually to postscript) as per the suggestion of a local
IT guy at my university. Nothing.

What is going on here?

Hi,

I have a MandRake 6.2 linux box with HP Colorado 8GB tape drive. It worked
fine before (There was only about 2GB information backuped to 8GB tape).

Since last week, I got following error message, Found end of tape. To continue,
type device/file name when ready. Normally this means I have to clean the
tape drive.

I bought a tape cleaner, but the drive does not initiate a cleaning process.
The instruction of the tape cleaner said, If the drive does not initiate
a cleaning process, the drive does not have the firmware necessary to use
this cleaner. And the CD come with this tape drive do not contain any software
for linux.

How to clean this HP Colorado tape drive?

Please sent a copy of help message to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks in advance

Thanks for all those who responded!
I found a boot disk off the net and boot my system up with it.
I edited the two files and ran lilo. Everything is fine now and
I am keeping the boot disk.

I looked thru filter (and ran grep on it as well) and find no instances
referring to smbclient nor smbprint. As a matter of fact I see nothing
referring to samba anything.

Hi,

Re attempts to get two LAN cards running in a W98-Linux dual-boot
machine;

It IS true that Linux "identifies" my D-LINK 528 PCI as a RealTek,
because it has a Realtek chip in it. So one has to know the maker of the
chips in a card, as well as the maker of the card!?

Anyway, attempts to reconfigure the ISA PnP D-Link 220P have not been
successful. Although I have turned OFF the "PnP Operating System?" option
in my bios, the software that came with the card will not permit changing
the IRQ or I/O, saying "determined by PnP OS".

I have looked into isapnp as Peter suggested, but I don't really know
exactly what to do.

I have 2 files in my Linux, I'll post them here although they will make
this a long post:

1. isapnp.gone:

# Standard motherboard stuff
#
# COM1
#
#IO 0x3f8,8
#IRQ 4

#
# Sound
#
#IO 0x220,16
#IO 0x330,2
#IO 0x388,4
#IRQ 5
#DMA 1
#DMA 5

= = = = = and = = = =

2. isapnp.conf:

# Trying port address 0273

# Trying port address 0283
# Trying port address 028b
.
.
.
# Trying port address 03e3

Thanks for help so far, and for any further suggestions-

That isn't quite correct. I checked again and find only this:

if [ "$PRINTER_TYPE" = "SMB" ]; then
filter: bestpath="$bestpath | ${FPIDIR}/smbprint ${SPOOLDIR}/acct"

This is the only thing in there. This points to acct but as you
mention,
acct doesn't exist in my lp directory.

Did you put the ISP's nameservers IP numbers in /etc/resolv.conf

search domain.org # domain of your system
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # primary nameserver
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # secondary nameserver

You must specify the the type of system you want to mount, take a look at
man mount.

search
the next two lines have the IPs of the nameservers

If this file was not correct wouldn't I also be having this problem as root?
I am not having this problem as root as you can see by my username. I am
getting out with Netscape just fine as root but not as a normal user or when
I su root out of the normal user. When I use Linux I really need to stop
having to be root to do certain things, like this. Those prior messages I have
been sending as Rick Hoffman was with Windows.

Man this is too wierd. The last time I was sending out messages in Linux as root
my sender name was "root"! I guess I have done something to change that (although
I don't know what it is) because I am in as root now but my sender name is what
I have always had in Netscape preferences. This is really weird.

Never-the-less I do not want to have to be logged in as root to get out with
Netscape.

If you put either of the following lines in your ~/.inputrc:

  set bell-style none

  set bell-style visible

... then the shell (and other readline-based programs) won't ring the
bell (in the second case, they'll make the window flash instead).

If your speaker's wired through your soundcard, you could use a mixer
program like aumix to turn the speaker volume down instead.

I always thought that it was. What I heard was that Linus called it
something
else but the person who hosted the ftp server where it was stored
thought that
the name was dumb so they called it Linux after Linus.

Can't recall the web site I saw that on though
