OK, I should have expected it:
I just finished installing Caldera 2.4. Netscape crashes immediately when I
enter my mail server password. This occurs both as root and as a regular
user. The .netscape directory for the regular user is from NS 4.61 used with
my previous installation (Mandrake 6.0).
Any ideas (besides use the KDE client)?

I guess it is a bit weird,
but what at is doing is printing that job number to stderr instead of
stdout.
The pipe '|' just pipes stdout by default.
use 2>&1 to direct stderr to stdout
at -f file now + 1 hour 2>&1 | grep job
this should give you the line with the job number.
or:
at -f file now + 1 hour 2>&1 | awk '/job/ {print $2}'
this should just return the job number.
If you just want the output of the at command to go into a file:
at -f file now + 1 hour 2>> bla
this will add the stderr output from at to the end of the file bla.
with at this is all of its output.
with a lot of commands/programs some output goes to stdout,
some to stderr. These are both useally the console.
they can be redirected seperately.
command > stdout 2> stderr
this directs the stdout output from command into the file stdout,
and the stderr output into the file stderr.
hope this helps.

After MUCH stuffing about it all falls into place quite easily. You have a
couple of options. You'll need to knock up a filter script for normal
postscript printing. For photo printing get hold either xwtools or
GIMP print 3.1.4. For postscript you'll need a RECENT version of Ghostscript
and /or Ghostview. Postscript printing can be done fro the command line by :-
gs @stcany.upp -sOutputFile=|\lpr -q -sPAPERSIZE=a4 file.name -c quit
the uniprint parameter file (stcany.upp in this case) may be different
for your printer.

Really though if a printer box is said to work with NT it _generally_ means
that it will work as a pretty swtandard lpr / lpd box. Beware, though, of
boxes claiming to be certified for Windows 2000. _Some_ of these NEED w2k
to work. You don't want on of those bastards though, they clog up the network
with who knows what. And lots of it.... Epson photo printers are REALLY bad
with thjis sort of box. ( The Epson printer driver also has a monitor thingy
which constantly polls the printer...you can guess the rest...:( )

Thanks for the insight.
I have solved the problem by 'grep'ing `atq` and then parsing
jobs and doing back flips to get the job I want.
I will definitely clean up the script by using your suggestion.

Paul,
Thank you very much. This was bugging me. I installed RH 6.1 from the 2
CD set and picked up c, source and the man pages. Or I thought I did. I went
back to the CD and could not find anything I did not install but strcpy was
not there. I got the man pages from the ftp site you listed and put them in
usr/man and now strcpy and all the crew show up.
For info chmod I get chmod(1) so I'm not sure what to install to get info
to work. If I man chmod I get chmod(1). There is a chmod in man2. I thought
-a was supposed to display both but it does not. May be my less pager is
stopping the displaying of the second. I'll switch it to more. At places
I've worked gettting multiple man pages was always setup and the last RH
install I did (5.2) everything was there so 6.1 must have changed things.
I'll try the emacs interface.
Thanks dk

Is there a program that will display your bandwith usage, how much you
downloaded since the beginning of the month, what speed a particular file is
downloading, etc... ?
Only requirement it must be a console program (not a gui thing that runs

Umm. I've installed 5.2 and 6.2 and latex worked fine both times.
But every time I try doctools -- regardless of OS -- something breaks.

This one's easy: you either
a) don't have an entry in your catalog file for
"-//Davenport//DTD DocBook V3.0//EN"
or
b) you do, but your catalog is not in a place
where nsgmls can find it
You have to fix this before you can go any further.
Check that whatever is invoking nsgmls is supplying
the name of your catalog file correctly, eg
nsgmls -s -c/home/peter/sgml.cat mydbfile.sgml
A typical catalog entry would be something like:
PUBLIC "-//Davenport//DTD DocBook V3.0//EN"
"/usr/local/lib/sgml/dtds/docbook/docbook.dtd"
but the filename part will be specific to your system:
you have to know where these files are stored.
All your other errors are contingent on this first one.
But you need entries for all the files which make up the
DocBook DTD, not just this one.

More data:
1. It worked. Once. After it broke as root, I exited KDE and logged in as a
regular user, where it was broke also. Logged back out, then in as root. Browsed
the web to check some HOWTOs. Decided before exiting that crashing was a fine way
to exit, so I tried again, as root. It didn't crash.
2. Logged out and logged back in as a regular user. Tried netscape messenger.
It worked (didn't crash when logging into the POP server)
3. Rebooted, then logged in again (as a regular user). Broke again. Tried
many times. Discovered that closing the Password dialogue with cancel or via the
window ("X") also causes netscape to go by-by.
OK. Caldera gets an F-minus. Time to restore my Mandrake distribution.
(granted, the problem is with netscape, but Caldera should not have put 4.72 in
the distribution.)

I would just point out that not all DSL providers using PPPoE will

Not sure what your problem is if Mandrake had your monitor and video card listed
in the installation process. If it didn't then you will have to configure the
XF86Config file, in particular the mode settings. There is a great website that
explains all those parameters, but I cannot put my hands on it.. sorry. You may
try chasing down the handware supported Linux site; start with the usual
linux.org for a link.

Why would you need luck? All you do is "apt-get -i lpd" or whatever the
package name is. That'll take out your old lpd and put in the unbugged
one.
