Trackballs are out -- they're even worse than mice in terms of
having to take your hand off of the thing several times for large
movements, and EVERY motion, large or small, requires moving the
hand back and forth between the ball and the buttons. Eeeeeyew!

I used optical mice back in the mid 80s and again a couple of years
ago. They have the same problem as roller mice, in that you have to
take the mouse off of the pad and move it over to the other side to
make large cursor movements. On top of that the optical beasts
are Procrustean; they are the new 'ergonomic' designs that work
fine if you have exactly the hand shape that the designer has but
range from painful to totally useless otherwise.

I just want a more sensitive mouse.

Yes, they are totally compatible.
Netscape bookmark files are plain HTML.

Yeah, I'd heard about that but thought it was a cron option. Good thing
I didn't open my mouth and make an arse of myself. :>

JOOC - what's the name of this other product? (Perhaps he'll see it, too?)

I don't use either of them. KDE is far too big and bloated, yeah, and as
for the latter, I don't want to even think I'm using Windoze. That's why
I use WindowMaker. Nice and robust, with all the features I like. (When
I use a GUI, I want pretties. Superfluous animations, backgrounds, pretty
blinking lights, etc..). An exclusively-Windows-using friend of mine saw
my WindowMaker up and running, with half a dozen dock apps of all sorts
running, and was awestruck. "Wow! That looks nice! How'd you do that?"

All this time she was under the impression that Linux was either a text
only OS, or a Windoze knockoff.

It looks to be like you need to specify the -r option to syslogd when it is
started (you may have to edit the script in /etc/rc?.d that starts it. Then the
resto of the setup is to tell each router to log to the machine running syslogd.

Did you compile the kernel module (es1371.o I think)? do a "modprobe -l
| less" to check that!
are the settings ind /etc/conf.modules correct?
did you check the README files in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/ ?

I personally think the redhat sndconfig tool is crap
But the PCI128 is a fine card, I am very happy with it, except that it
dont play MIDI, but who needs MIDI?

If all else fails: the ALSA drivers (http://www.alsa-project.org/) work
fine too,
and you will be able to use the joyport (IF, and only if you enable it
in the alsa config file)

Do you have a file /etc/ftpshut?

If you do, delete it. That will fix your problem... If not, reinstall ftpd

If you can bring up another terminal window, then type 'panel &'. When you
get the desktop the way you like it, you should save the session.

What cpu?, motherboard? If you're using an Intel cpu, you should
be using the internal diode to get the cpu's core temp, but your mobo
must support this also. Cpu temps from a thermistor border on useless,
or at best are 10 to 15C less than the actual cpu core temp. eg.,
35C from a well placed cpu probe == 45 to 50C core temp.

55C in bios is too high, but you must also factor in that the cpu is
not getting 'hlt' instructions. When you have booted Linux, assuming
'hlt's are enabled in your kernel, the cpu should be cooler while
receiving idle instructions (hlt's). So you should see a lower temp.
Check 'dmesg' after boot up to see if 'hlt's are enabled, they
prob'ly are.

On avg., cpu at idle (with 'hlt's) should be close to room temp.
This of course depends on how well your case is ventilated. Case temp
should also be close to room temp. Normal core temps should be in
the 25 -> 30C at idle, <= 45C under extreme load (eg., 'cpuburn').
50C core temps are marginally close to too high for error free operation.
Depending on the cpu, you will most likely begin to have errors at
> 55C. 'memtest86' (L2 0n) or 'prime95' (16 hour self test) can check
for errors, altho any software test is actually gonna test the ram/
cpu/cache working as a system.

   To illustrate, I have a p3-450 oc'd to 608mhz at 2.18 (+10%) Vcore.
As I type, the internal diode is reporting 24C. Under extreme load
it never goes over 43C. My motherboard (Soyo 6ba+III) temp is 33C as
reported by a thermistor built in near the BX chipset. This temp is
usually in the 30 to 40C range (with the BX chipset running at 135%)

Sort of. I played a lot last week when I installed my second Linksys
LNE100TX. The only configuration that didn't work was when the BIOS
assigned the same IRQ to both cards; then eth1 wouldn't work at all.

With a voice mail capable modem, can modem pass CallerID info to the

Greetings to one and all,
Now, I dont really know how to approach this subject, but... well Im
having trouble with my whole learning
process. I possess no great love of an operating system that crashes
frequently, which is the main driving force for my learning linux as
opposed to using Windows. Other than that though I have very little
motivation. This problem also plagues my quest to learn a programming
language, ANY programming language... Ive tried to learn c, c++, perl,
python, even HTML causes me to stumble and turn into a vegetable...
these things seem to me like lack of motivation, or laziness, or perhaps
im am just not at the right age to start cramming all of these things
into my cranium. I know this is a bit off-topic, and also that its not
really a question one can answer in concrete terms, but im making this
call out to all listening; my path to linux is obscured, show me the
light!
