Yeah. SuSE is EXTREMELY easy to install.
Plus rock solid and stable. 99.9% works right out of the box.
But wait a couple of weeks for SuSE 7.0 release. Get the DVD release.

Almost the entire installation is automated, other than language, time
zone, apps selection, and networking / dial up. info.

Subject: Detecting new size of partition in Windoze
Date: Wed, 02 Aug 2000 20:30:01 GMT

Hi,
first, I know this should go to a windows newsgroup, but since it's a linux
program that caused this, I thought that you guys might have had the same
problem.

I had 3 partitions on my HD, a 1G for windows, 256mg for swap and the rest for
linux (about 4.5G)... and soon realized that I needed more space for windows,
so I backed up linux and erased its partitions and erased windows partition too,
making a 2G partition at the same place windows used to be, and remade the
others within the rest of the HD...

I reinstalled linux, restored my backup and everything is perfect except for one
thing... When I load windows, it doesn't recognize the new size of its
partition... I used fsck to do all that job...

I asked the question on a windows related newsgroup they told me to _buy_ a good
partition utility; I don't have the cash and I think fsck is very good, isn't
it?
They also told me I should simply reinstall windows; that I won't do... I don't
want to go through that painful process! ;)

So, is there a way I can make windows recognize the new size of the disk without
buying anything or reinstalling windows?

Thanks,
        Simon

PS: I've tried to write an "infinite" file with a program I wrote to see if I
would be able to tresspass the disk's limit to crash on the new limit, but
windows wouldn't allow the program to write passed the 1G of disk...

Most Unix clones are reasonable well compliant with standards POSIX,
Xopen, etc. these days, so the "flavor" shouldn't be a big issue.

If you want to make it easy on yourself, I'd recommend SCO UnixWare 7,
since it seems to have the best documentation, it's easy to set
up, and for administration, about all you have to remember is "scoadmin".

SCO OpenServer is a mountain of links and patches, so I wouldn't recommend
it to a newbie. It's being replaced by UnixWare 7 anyway.

FreeBSD and Linux are solid systems, too, but as a newbie, you'll probably
to a lot more head scratching. Then again, maybe that's the better way to
learn...

Good luck,

I used to try symlinking the Linux bookmark file to the Windows one, but
that didn't work very well. It was fine until I tried to add a bookmark
from Linux, then it would write a new local copy of the file.

I haven't tried this, but I just thought of it. Write a short shell
script to copy the Windows bookmark file into the Linux bookmark file,
and another short one to write it back out to the Windows bookmark
file. Then run the copy-in script at boot time (I guess set it up in
the runlevels), and run the copy-out script at shutdown/reboot time.
This is assuming that you have mounted the Windows partition into the
Linux directory tree somewhere.

I'm using RedHat 6.2 now.
When I tried startx after making a few modification as suggested in the
readme file for the installation of nvidia geforce drivers, it came up with
the following:

xauth: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.2' not found (required by
/usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6)
xauth: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.2' not found (required by
/usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6)
xinit: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.2' not found (required by
/usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6)

and stopped.
If possible I would like to upgrade the currently installed rpm. I checked
different ftp-sites (redhat among others), but didn't find a newer version.

Subject: Cron behaves differently on Sundays?
Date: Wed, 02 Aug 2000 13:35:32 -0700

Here's an odd one. I have many systems running RedHat 6.2 or 6.1.
They all have the same entry in root's crontab:

        0,15,30,45 * * * * /usr/sbin/sendmail -q

The purpose of this is to clean out /var/spool/mqueue, because
none of these systems run sendmail as a daemon (for security
reasons).

Six days of the week, this works fine. But on Sundays, from 00:00
to 23:45, every occurrence of this command yields the following
message in an e-mail to root:

        Subject: Cron <root@cachalot> -q
        X-Cron-Env: <SHELL=/bin/sh>
        X-Cron-Env: <HOME=/root>
        X-Cron-Env: <PATH=/usr/bin:/bin>
        X-Cron-Env: <LOGNAME=root>

        /bin/sh: -q: bad option

This is so bizarre! Why only on Sundays? Any ideas?

Inflation...

But not really. The supports now has been extented, the "Personal"
version is now cheaper.

Plus SuSE usually gives some real improvement in the extras as well.
I've been using *nix for a decade now. SuSE is the only Linux I have
confident in. It's pretty solid engineered, well polished stuff.

Get the DVD. It contains more than the 6 CD set have.

If you can wait. You can get it at a discounted rate from other vendors.

I'm running SuSE 6.4 right now. I'm not interested in the 2.4 kernel, or
any of the Linux kernel du jour at all. But I'll update the FFS from
their ftp site, or the new SMP patch, if any. I even dumped ipchains
already.
