Thank you very much for the replies.

However I am still stuck. I am able to get into single user mode and
mount the following: /, /proc /usr, /opt all with ext2 rw.

I could not find a vi, pico or ed as suggested by earlier poster. And I
dont know why. I cd to /usr and nothing is below it and I dont know
what happened to those files. Is there any tricks I can insert that
initdefault level without access to a full editor? just a thought.

BTW just to clarify things, I had a working X window logon and was
able to log on and do normal stuff. It is the part where I modified
the inittab that caused all the problems. Now only if i can get an
editor to modify that inittab :-)

Being Unix I would think that the default for Solaris is ^? for erase, BUT
your .login or .profile might be setting erase to ^H for lowly Windows
users (my ISP did that). I fixed it to set erase ^? and TERM=vt100 if
TERM=linux and RedHat xterm worked fine with the ^H. Then I started using
Mandrake on my laptop and that uses ^? for erase in xterm (Konsole).

What is strange is that RedHat xterm automatically works with Mandrake and
vice versa even though erase is different on each. And either works
automatically with BSD. But Solaris does not seem to be able to
automatically recognize the erase character. This is easy to fix when
different TERM uses a specific erase. But the question is how to get
Solaris to recognized different erase for the same TERM (xterm) like Linux
and BSD do?

OTOH, Linux servers were the only part of Dell's business
growing at double-digit rates according to the latest
earnings report.

I'd forget about kppp or any "GUI" thing until you get your hardware
strait, the command line is much easier to see what is really going on.
Check your BIOS first, you may have one of the ports disabled. Most of
the basic hardware such as com ports and printer ports will use defaults
for IRQ and I/O and can be set in the BIOS. "BUSY" is almost a sure
thiing for IRQ conflict.

That maybe the problem 03F8 is the default I/O for com1 ( which is what
ttyS0 would be using ) and if you don't see it I'd guess the kernel is
not able to find you serial port. Look in /var/log/messages , you should
see a statement about ttyS devices being found.

I'm running Linux Mandrake 7.1 and have an HP 8GB internal IDE tape
drive. I use the ide-scsi module for tape access (/dev/hdd <->
/dev/st0), which seems to work great.

My questions:

1) How do I make devices on a bootfloppy so ide-scsi will work from said
bootfloppy? Using DrakFloppy, I created a disk and told it to pre-load
ide-scsi, but the only devices on the floppy are /dev/hdb6 and /dev/fd0.

2) I'm shooting for a ``painless'' recovery plan, so what is the best
way to backup data (using only GNU tools that come with a common Linux
distribution)? I'm thinking something like `tar cvzpf /dev/st0
--exclude /proc /' after unmounting the cdrom, floppy, and windoze
partition.

3) Which programs do I need on the boot floppy? fdisk, mke2fs, mount,
umount, tar, gzip sound like good choices, but what else do I need?

4) Are these the steps to recovery I need to follow, or have I left out
something?
    a) boot to floppy
    b) create partitions with fdisk
    c) recreate file systems with mke2fs
    d) mount new file systems (e.g., /mnt/, /mnt/home, /mnt/tmp, etc.)
    e) restore data from tape: cd /mnt; tar xzvpf /dev/st0

5) lilo and grub: If I want to use lilo, all I have to do next is run
`lilo /mnt/etc/lilo.conf' right? If I'm using grub, though, how do I
update the mbr?

Thanks for any help with these questions. If all this is in a HOWTO
which I missed, I apologize for the superfluous posting. . .

Here is what I have to do per the recommendations:

1. I rebooted and from the prompt LiLo boot: myconfig lilo init=/bin/sh

2. This got me to boot single user
3. issued #mount to check whats mounted
4. #mount / -o remount,rw
5. #mount /dev/hda3 /usr earlier i did not do this so i was not
able to
see the editors
6. edit the /etc/inittab
7. wait for good minute to flush the buffer to hardisk
8. reboot and it reboot to a nice xdm login prompt.

Thanks to all that assisted.

fit my graphics card. however when rebooting i have errors and i can no

because i am a newbie kinda and i dont know any commands to run from # to

even with windows 98 installed in my computer i was not ablke to use it

If that is a i810 chipset, then the following Red Hat errata maybe of
some assistance: https://www.redhat.com/support/docs/tips/i810.html

Are you sure you actually deleted the Windows partition? At the boot
prompt, press tab and see if there is another boot option. You can
also get rid of Linux (atleast the bootloader) by typing 'lilo -u' as
root at the console. Then restart and it will no longer boot Linux.

to boot to windows, just go into your linux config and set lilo to boot to windows,
then if you want, you can
also set the default as windows...
no need to start all over

in your linux config, you can not only set lilo to give you windows as an option, you
can
also set it to boot windows as default

Okay...I worked this out. Ran minicom as root, and saw path to Lock file
was /var/lock. So...as with pine and making /var/spool/mail/ chmod 1777,
I did the same thing to /var/lock, and lo and behold...minicom will now
run for me as non-root user. I had already made /dev/ttyS1 available to
non-root, so I knew that wasn't it.

Anyway, I hope this can help someone else out.

See www.debian.com for info on their Mac ports.

Here is part of what they say about the Motorola/IBM PowerPC Linux:

It could be that Solaris uses ^? (that would be good since then it would
be consistent). However none of my configs set it. I don't source any
files and the only one called is my .tcshrc. TCSH understands either
erase, but when you call something like rm -i filename, it asks for
confirmation, and that only accepts whatever is set by stty. This
version of solaris is just a standard install, so noone changed the
features. I also work on an Irix machine, but I don't know if that
setting was changed there (I am not an admin there). Both Solaris and
Irix I work with have ^H as the default erase character. Both linux and
freebsd have ^?. BSD's do have a way of setting this for the terminal so
that all users are effected, but I didn't completely understand it
(going to have to test it), linux as I get it will have to use stty in
init files (.tcshrc in my case).

Is there a way to call stty on bootup so that all connections use ^H by
default or do I always have to put it into startup files (like .bashrc
or .tcshrc).

I realize that the developers don't see a problem there, but I still
think Backspace should send Backspace.
