What about renicing cron, or using nice inside the crontab.

afair there is a version of cron for laptops that will test first to
see if anyone is arround before launching stuff. Otherwise the best one
can do is use a line like "if load_avg > 0.5 then reschedule".

Subject: problems starting mysql
Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 12:30:11 GMT

I have been trying to do this project that is in a linux
magazine and I am having great trouble. I cann't get PHP to configure
because it cannt find the headers. I have pointed it to
/usr/include/mysql where I see files with the .h (headers). What is
it looking for.

Second question.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled it many times. The problems are
1) when booting I now get a message that says "Starting mysqld daemon
with databases from /var/lib/mysql and that used to not be there.

2) I cannt "log in" to mysql because I am not authorized to even
though I am root.

Please help I want to do this project very much and I am having great
difficulty

Thank you for you help

Yes. from p100s to Athlon700s to G3s. They mostly run the default packages.
Which are compiled for 386s and ppc.

Well done. That extra math performance makes your mostly integer using
kernel so much faster. This is from a i586 2.2.16 kernel, with only things
in it I need. It makes little difference to anything.

2.2.14 has a serious security bug in it. This is why SuSE has released and
update to the k_default.rpm package with a 2.2.16 kernel. Keep up with the
security advisories.

I know.

RH, Debian etc do sound, SMP, pentium and other optimised kernels. The
entirety of Mandrake is pentium optimised. Stuff that's in the SuSE kernel is
available as patches elsewhere, and they are being used by other
distributers.

Yes. This is all the kernel. SuSE 6.4 'out the box' has optimised kernels.
Which makes a difference. But not much. *Everything else on the CDs* is not
optimised. They are i386 rpms. They will not have pentium, or mmx, or 3dnow
optimisations in them.

If you recompile from source then they will, but that's not SuSE 6.4, is it.
AT least it sort of is but then you're having to faff about in ways you're
detracting other distributions for. If you want that extra speed get
Mandrake, it's *all* optimised.

Is there a way (thru scripting) to determne if the box is REALLY busy

Hi,

We installed the cvs on our Linux server and it works ok there.

But when i installed the WinCVS client on the windows plaform i couldn't
connect to the Linux server in order to access the cvs.

I set the following parameters:

CVSROOT:
:pserver:alex@datanaut1:/usr/local/cvsroot

Authentification:
"passwd" file on the cvs server

So when i set them up the client said:
NEW CVSROOT: :pserver:alex@datanaut1:/usr/local/cvsroot (password
authentication)

Saved settings for D:\Work successfully...

Then i tried to logon to the server, i entered the password and got:

cvs login

(Logging in to alex@datanaut1)

cvs [login aborted]: recv() from server datanaut1: Connection reset by peer

*****CVS exited normally with code 1*****

Could anyone help me with this, pls?

Hello,

After attempting several installations here is what I can conclude
about the "mount failed" installation problem:

I don't know what exactly is causing it but there must be an error
with the Red Hat 5.2 installation program because, cronologically:

(i) I did a workstation install and things went fine
(ii) I went back and did a custom install defining more partitions
than those defined by the workstation install and I got the
     "mount failed" error
(iii) ...but after that I clicked on the Back button all the way back
to the installatin class menu and selected workstation
install instead of custom install. This had the strange effect of
preserving all my partitions and mount points as I made them but
not al packages I had selected were installed. But there was no
"mount failed" error after doing this.

Perhaps this error is fixed in later releases of RedHat (?).
The funniest thing is when I installed RH 5.2 with my FAT16 partition
instead of the FAT32 partition I never got a mount failed error and
did the same steps as for custom install.

Thanks,

Neil

/bin/sort ? Or perhaps /bin/sort | /usr/bin/uniq -c ?

The newer LILO uses the newer BIOS calls that don't have the 1024
cylinder limit. Of course you need a new enough BIOS for this to work...

Creating a small (64-128meg) root (/) or a tiny (5meg or so) /boot file
system early (entirely below cylinder 1024) *always* works.

This is a PCI modem? If so, Linux won't ever see it. Toss it and get
an *external* RS232 Serial modem.

Yeah, well...I was hoping for a means by editing a file
somewhere. I understand at least some of the advantage to
identifying one's box as a Mac, Doze, or linux system running
this or that browser, but I would like to hide or change this
information on occassion - preferably by editing some config
file or adding a file or SOMETHING. Is this not possible? Is
it built into the navigator binary?

Subject: parport / kernel message problem
Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 15:35:43 GMT

Right after I compiled the kernel and modules, and configured the
/etc/conf.modules file with parport, I saw the name of my printer, an Epson
Stylus Color 800, appear after parport1 during bootup after the modules
installed. Of course the printer was turned on at that point.

This is (and has been) my parport configuration:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x3bc,0x378 irq=5,7

Mysteriously, the printer's name no longer appears, even though I have the
printer online during bootup. I made no changes to conf.modules other than
to add a sound driver / module on irq 9. What I see now is:

parport1: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [SPP,ECP,ECPEPP,ECPPS2]
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
parport1: Unspecified, Unknown vendor Unknown device

Parallel printer support has been compiled as a module.

The printer prints fine in linux, as well or better than it did before the
change in the bootup message.

What could account for the "unknown vendor Unknown device" message? I know
that the printer is IEEE-1284 compliant. Do I need to recompile the kernel,
even though it's highly unlikely that doing that will resolve the problem?

I'd be grateful for any assistance or suggestions anyone could offer.
