What do you mean by "logout"? Don't you just mean "exit the login
shell" (whichever that is - it'll probably be your process group session
leader). Is that what you want? What is the effect you are trying to
achieve? Are you trying to launch a daemon?
Perhaps a book on unix programming would be helpful?

that subject is not a scheme for a quick answere, this really is
confusing......alright:
I have windows and linux installed. at LILO when i first start my computer
i now have the options to run FLOPPY LINUX or WINDOWS. i would like to run
windows but when i select it its says "windows loading", it says this for
hours on end and windows never starts. here is what i think it may be. i
have no space in my "Primary Partition", but all of my 6GB is in
my "Extended Partition" now my extended is divded half and half, one for
Linux Mandrake 7.0 and one for Windows. The problem is windows loads
forever and i wanna know how to fix it? i can never run windows. I have
edited my /etc/lilo.conf file to have windows as an option but it wont go
into it. i think the problem lies somewhere in my hard drive. what can i
do?
P.S. reply to this even if someone already has please, i need all the help
possible.

Wrong. .bash_profile is the first file bash looks to execute
for a ~login shell~. If you had said .bashrc your answer would
have been correct. The other solution is to invoke xterm with the
'-ls' option to make it a login shell. As an alternative, he
could also export those variables in his .profile, making them
available to all child shells after login.
[ aside: I like the .bashrc idea better as invoking xterm with
'-ls' is fairly rare. ]

Are you somehow claiming that noone upgraded their systems, that all
licences sold are for new installs? Are you somehow claiming that all
win3.1 machines are still in use? But even if this were true, it still doesn't
add up to 500 million, (I don't know for sure what milj means, is this an

lower than the number of Win95 licences. So no way can it all add up to 500

the traditional pc manufacturers are a tiny fragment of the embedded market,
and WinCE a smaller fragment of that. Even among handheld pcs, which is where
WinCE has it's largest segment, WinCE is less than 20% of the market, and it's
basically invisible in the rest of the embedded world.

Well Perl uses dynamically growable arrays. :-)
But it sounds like you speak of C.
DS> In this day and age, there is no excuse for being able to overflow a

Recall though, than an individual can write bad programs in ~any~
language. It is not the fault of the language, but generally the
programmer. So perhaps, your comment should be altered to say:
"In this day in age, there is no excuse for writing a program that
contains a exploitable buffer overflow."
But then again that has always been true, C is a sharp sword.

Subject: Persistent Superblock, mkraid (SoftRAID)
Date: 9 Sep 2000 19:48:08 GMT
Hello,
A problem I had lately was with an RAID0 array (md0 = sdd2 + sde2)
with the P.S. enabled. I added a second RAID0 array (md1 = sdf2 +
sdg2) which changed the device name 'mapping': md0 and md1 got
switched. Trying to startup md0 failed because sdd2 and sde2 no
longer 'map' to the original drives of md0, but instead to the
newly added drives, which are uninitialized. Changing the device
names in /etc/raidtab didn't help either. To fix the problem I
changed the drive IDs so each drive got its original device name
again. Is it also possible to fix this with the raidtools (leaving
data on array intact)?
In the man page of "mkraid" there's a note that states that
initializing an array (with "mkraid") destroys the data on the
drives. However, for an array without a P.S. it seems to be
necessary to run "mkraid" for the appropriate array to get it
'active'. After this it can be mounted and the data on the drives
is still intact. This is a bit contrary...
But, what I'd like to know is if it's save to run "mkraid" on an
array to change a setting like the P.S., the chunk size, or the
drive device names without destroying the data on the array. I'm
not eager to try and find out ;)
