Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 22:33:50 GMT
Hello world,
I guess the subject say it all.
I'm looking for a Client/linux-server based fax solution that also has
windows clients.
Something in the genre of GFI's Faxmaker -> www.gfifax.com
Basicaly I want want to run the run the fax-server on a Linux box (Incomming
and outgoing). But I need a client software that runs under windows as well.
Does such a piece of software exist ?? Is it being developed ??
Or is it still a DIY-project (Do It Yourself)??
Kind regards

I'm not sure how to take that... Hmm.
Well, I have a couple of IBM UltraStars in there. 80MB/s U2W SCSI, 10k
rpm, so they're pretty loud. And fast, I might add, so even when there
IS a disk write, the clanging is over almost before it starts.
As for the 4am cron slamming, It's all over in about 10 seconds or so.
As far as no swap... Well, I have never used all of my ram all at once.
Even using the Gimp (which I use quite often), so I don't think it's a
problem. Of course, with the way memory prices are dropping, I may just
slap another 512MB in there for the full 1 gig... ;)

mkbootdisk is just looking for your kernel and assumes it is named
/boot/vmlinuz-x.x.xx. Just link your 2.2.17 kernel to that name and it
should work.

There is a script available to ease the setup,
called "install-sendmail", which does both fetch- and send-.
Search for it on google.com.
Kmail is a good, usable GUI, if you run KDE its in the
menu tree.

Good morning, I hope someone can help me.
I'm trying to access our Linux server via FTP to transfer files to our NT
server. I can login as any manner of users, but none that give "across the
board" access to all files/directories. The only FTP login that I've tried
that DOESN'T work is 'root'.
What do I need to do to have full access to all files and directories? (a
bit like 'Administrator' login on NT).
Thanks in advance,

It's always good to run "ldconfig" after you install libraries, whether
this will solve your problem, I don't know, but it never hurts.

You are right, you should just install the two packages mentioned below if
you want just the browser. Netscape is a hog, so the less components you
install the better. Plus, isn't it the most frustratoing thing in the
world when you right-click on a web link and netscape gives you a dialogue
with about 43 different choices of what to do with the link? GEEZ just
gimme the "open in new window" and leave it at that, fer chrissakes !!

I didn't realize that pine could do POP3, but apparently version 4 can.
http://www.washington.edu/pine/faq/config.html#9.3
But if you have a working smtp server, you might want to use fetchmail,
which can grab mail from multiple POP3 servers and redirect it though your
local mail server where you can read it all at the same time with pine.
I heard that fetchmail can also save received mail to a file instead of
your mail server.

yes. redhat supports SMP. they will load two kernels, a
uniprocessor and an SMP one. the SMP is set to the default. however,
it can be good to have a uniprocessor in reserve in case there are any
problems.
on the other hand, compiling your own kernel is not difficult. it
usually doesn't matter all that much if a distribution supports it out
of the box.

"libc6" is a funny way of referring to the library installed as
/lib/libc.so.6. You have version 2.1.92, which is newer than 2.0.7pre6.
If your system works now without libc5, then you don't need to worry
about Documentation/Changes advising you to upgrade it.

Subject: generating kernel crash dumps?
Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 15:18:53 -0800
Hello:
I would like to setup a few RH6.2 boxes to save any crash information. In
Solaris one can enable crash dumps (to /var/crash) and/or use the savecore
command to dump it to a file. After which you can anaylze the dumps with
adb/kdb and other tools to determine the system's instructions leading up to the
crash.
I cannot seem to find any similar command or configuration in linux. I have
searched and read many documents, but have not found an answer. The closest I
have come was to find a crash dump analysis kit at:
http:://www.missioncriticallinux.com/technology/crash/
This requires recompiling the kernel with a core dump patch.
I am looking for a way to generate crash dumps without patching and recompiling
the kernel.. If anyone knows how to do this, could you please post/email me
instructions or point me to some documentation describing the procedure.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: can't execute file on local drive
From: John Hunter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 19 Dec 2000 19:56:55 -0600
I am working on a networked linux client with a solaris NIS password
server and NFS file server. When I try to execute a script on one of
the NFS drives, it runs fine. When I try and execute it on a local
drive, I get a permission denied.
Here are a few commands that may illustrate why I find this
perplexing:
video:/video/hunter/optsolve> ./testexe
./testexe: Permission denied.
video:/video/hunter/optsolve> ls -lF
total 1608
-rwxrwxrwx 1 jdhunter 120 50 Dec 19 12:35 testexe*
video:/video/hunter/optsolve> head -1 testexe
#!/usr/local/bin/perl
video:/video/hunter/optsolve> ls -lF /usr/local/bin/perl
-rwxr-xr-x 2 root root 733995 Apr 14 2000 /usr/local/bin/perl*
video:/video/hunter/optsolve> grep video /etc/fstab
/dev/hdb7 /video ext2 defaults,noauto,user 1 2
Is there some feature of a mounted filesystem that makes it impossible
to run executables? Could this be caused if my user/group ids are
somehow now properly in sync w/ client and server?
Thanks for any advice,

I found the easiest thing to do to get KDE2 going, is when you install RH
7.0 select Gnome as your desktop environment. Then open up the File Manager
and double click the KDE2 rpms. Do not force anything! The first thing you
should do is install htdig, then install QT. Then install the KDE2 files.
When there are no dependencies you are installing it in the correct order.
It should also let you know what files are dependent upon each other and you
can work your way up the ladder. OR you could read the correct order to
install the files on http://www.kde.org.

No.
You need to adjust your mail sending software (MUA), not the
mail routing software (MTA). Once a mail message is sent, there is
no easy way to change it. I suppose you could set sendmail to queue
all outgoing mail, then process the mail files in the mqueue (mail
queue) with a Perl script. But don't do it! Instead use a custom
program to generate the email (say using a web page and CGI Perl
program).
