There should be a kill buttin.

I don't have an attitude. I'm telling you what's wrong. If you want to
interpret what's wrong as in some way an insult to yourself, that's
your problem. The facts don't care! If it helps .. I'm not insulted by
being told that "I've messed up". That's just the fact! Now you need to
take it into account. You now know that you can stop looking for other
things to blame, with high probability. The bios is not to blame, in
particular. You can be sure of that. That leaves two things to blame:
the memory, or you.

Which is it? The procedure I suggested will enable you to find out.
Cut the memory size parameter you give at boot until you discover.

And please say thanks later!

Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 22:29:11 +0100

Hi All,

Up to date I've been using the SuSE rescue system incase of boot problems.
However I was wondering how to manually create a boot disk/rescue disk.
(I'm taking a guess it will run over multiple floppies). What would be
the most useful tools to have on such a series of disks.

This was an easy task under Windows 9x (not NT or 2k), just system format
a disk, put on a set of CD-ROM drivers and a series of system tools and
fav' DOS text editors. Seems to be a little more under Linux.

Just as a side question... My SuSE rescue disks seem to give me root
access to all files on any device. Does this mean that anybody with a
bootdisk and physical access to my PC can view/modify my documents?

TIA

Thanks a lot for your help. I now use rsync with ssh. But it does not
work fine in scripts because I have to type the password twice! There
is the variable RSYNC_PASSWORD, but it is only for use with an rsync
server.

Note that I DID 'man ssh'. Any suggestion to avoid typing password with
rsync/ssh?

The Linux Users' Group of Davis will soon be planning a game-show style
trivia game about Linux. We're considering having it taped and broadcast
on local public access, or perhaps even on PBS, if, of course, there's
interest.

We are currently in the planning stages, and have no idea when this
event will take place.

However, we thought we'd share this event with the rest of the community.

If you're interested in:

My up2date progam will not run. This is what it gives when I type
'up2date':

Traceback (innermost last):
  File "usr/sbin/up2date", line 9, in ?
    import rpm
ImportError: /usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/rpmmodule.so: undefined

I have tried updating to 2.4.4-1 but that seems to be broken. Now RPM
says (on a -V) that "up2date-gnome-2.4.4-1.i386.rpm is not installed"
but when I goto install it (-i) it says it is installed. Even when I
use --force, -V still reports it as not installed.

It's STAT is R. Here's the complete line:

What is the MT command? Which package is it it a part of?

Did you try http://www.ping.be/bios/index.html ? Found it using Google a
while back when upgrading a BIOS.

I'm using that same BIOS version and haven't had any problems with 96 and
128 MB of RAM, so I doubt that it's a BIOS problem... I didn't even need
to change the LILO file.

I'd think it's RAM related. Try just running the new sticks alone and see
if that brings up the kernel panic.

/dev/srX is for reading/writing RAW data (i.e. no format is considered)
/dev/scdX is just another device link but usually assosiated with a
format consideration (e.g. ISO9660) but it all depends on how the device
is mounted (e.g. mount -t ISO9660 /dev/scd0....) etc.

Otherwise until the device is mounted there is no real difference
if the Major/Minor number points to the same device.

For my part, I use `exim' instead of `sendmail'. It has a nice
graphical interface called `eximon' which could do what you want.

Did you read the TOMCAT documentation ??

Tomcat runs at a default port number and dependent
on where you have configured the JSP (port 8007) and other modules
(assuming you have installed them too) they also use
other service ports. Also if you are running apache (httpd)
concurrently you will probably have to modify the httpd.conf
to accomodate tomcat to handle servlets & JSP's.
This is all in the Tomcat doco.

Your error message simply is stating that the tomcat
port (probably 9080) is already being used by another service.
Reconfigure tomcat/httpd and restart it and you'll be OK.

Cheers, Grahame
PS: I have put a pointer in the error message to assist you.

Oh how it tries...

If you're updating, use rpm -Uv packagename ....
If the problem persists, try issuing rpm --rebuilddb, to rebuild the rpm
database.
