I realize the OP apparently is interested in Red Hat, but I believe a look
at Turbolinux
http://www.turbolinux.com/
which is based on Red Hat (IIRC) and widely used in Asia, might help.

Search on freshmeat for a program called CPUBURN. It has some options for
stressing the CPU and memory.

A couple things:
Upgrade your mkinitrd if you haven't done so. The kernel drivers are in a
different hierarchy than before.
If you've built the driver into the kernel you won't see a module.
BTW, your mkinitrd command contains a typo -- or was this what you used?

I suppose that you've checked the obvious -- you do have write access to the
port? I.e., ls -l /dev/ttyS0 should have crw-rw-rw perms.

No, I've got FB support on 2.4.3 and that works fine. Perhaps you've not
turned on prompting for experimental drivers.

I'm running StarOffice 5.2 on a Sony VAIO P166 with 64MB of RAM that has
SuSE 7.1 installed. It takes about 75 seconds to load but after that the
speed is acceptable.
Now on my 1GHz Athlon Beast with 512MB RAM, also running SuSE 7.1, it
talkes less than 2 seconds to load. SO5.2 is great!

Usually the wrong driver for the video card or the wrong monitor

Great? I have a 1g Athlon beast too. I use staroffice on it on occasion.
SO5.2 does not seem so great to me. It consumes several different
processes, crashed the X session with the athlon on the 2.2 kernel,
and seems to be just as unwieldy as previous versions were.
Great is not the word I would use to describe SO5.2. Perhaps acceptable
is... But acceptable definitely is NOT the word for slower machines and
SO5.2. I would use the word "frustrating" for those machines.

Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 13:46:37 GMT
Hi,
I am trying to compile linux-2.4.4 kernel on my linux machine comprised of
an Asus K7M Mobo and an AMD Athlon 500MHz CPU. When configuring the "USB
support", I get stuck and am confused as to which UHCI support to choose:
CONFIG_USB_UHCI or CONFIG_USB_UHCI_ALT (Alternate JE Driver). Can anyone
please shed some lights in this matter?
TIA.

Basically, there's two versions of the UHCI driver. The JE driver is the
older one. You can check Documentation/usb/uhci.txt for details, but as
I read it there's only one or two things you might need the JE driver for.
My suggestion: build both drivers as modules and modprobe the one you
want at boot-time ( or set up /etc/modules.conf to autoload the correct
one when anything wants to use USB devices ). I'd also go with the newer
regular UHCI driver if it doesn't give you trouble, and use the older JE
driver only if you absolutely have to.

On cola, a database tool called QDDB was announced. It claims "you can

Thank you Kwan for your answer. I use the command as in Quik-HowTo, and in
other books, exactly like above.
After the error message, anyway I use lilo command and reboot.
Of course checking kernel after that shows there is no update in anything,
at least because mounting NTFS partition in another hard disk does not
work at all.

Why are you such an asshole? Did your mother refuse to breast feed you as
a baby? Once again, you fail to follow a thread. Then you hurl insults
over issues that were openly and clearly declared in the original or later
posts in the thread.
Of course I "haven't done any work" as you put it. Not only did I state
that I hadn't been installing source (other than kernel), but the WHOLE
POINT of my original post was to find out the best way to do this. Why
didn't you describe the function of usr/local, and its subdirectories, in
more detail in your last post--instead of simply replying "usr/local"? Now
that was helpful, NOT.
Why don't you take a vacation or something. Your attitude is NOT
appreciated. It completely overwhelms the minimal assistance you
occasionally provide.
