That's the default setting and it works fine for me.
Just make sure you're running dosemu's ems.sys if you want expanded
memory.

Do you mean xdosemu (xdos) or dosemu (dos)?
If xdosemu/xdos doesn't work, I have no idea.
But if dosemu/dos doesn't work, then:

1. Make sure you are running dosemu in a real linux console (CTRL+ALT+F1),
*not* an xterm, rxvt, eterm, konsole or any other terminal emulators.
2. Make sure the dosemu binary is suid or you are running as root.
