Well, it's official. Palmtree, the Linux/DosEmu terminal server I set up in July of '99 has been taken off line for good. After two great years, it has been retired.
I left the company June 30 and it was replaced by a Citrix server approximately 2 weeks later. Just last week, in the wake of the Nimda Virus, I was asked to format the server for them and install Windows NT. :-( Here are a few highlights of Palmtree's glorious career: Served 35 -55 simultaneous users and up to 63 concurrent DOS sessions across a wide area network and the Internet. Handled printing from DOS Jobs through LPD ques AND Terminal Pass through printing. Even at highest loads, users did not notice a difference between Palmtree and running DOS on their own computers. Had a PIII 450MHz CPU 128 RAM RedHat 6.0 (With DOSEMU downgraded, remember that fiasco?) Total cost of the solution: $3,000 (aprox) for the Server $1,250 for Site license of Van Dyke's CRT terminal emulator for Windows -------- $4,250 Total Total cost of the Citrix Solution that replaced it: $30,000 (aprox) Total Total Improvements of Citrix System over Palmtree: 1. Perceived ease of management. The good news is, they let me make an archive of the complete system before formatting it. Therefore I've been able to preserve the configuration in case someone else needs a similar solution. Matthew Nuzum followers.net
