There might be a misunderstanding here. You should _not_ need SUID-root for DPMI. Regarding FreeDOS vs. DR-DOS: FreeDOS supports the redirector interface for lredir'ed drives, but does not implement locking yet. So you're best bet is still with DR-DOS if you need locking.
