I have _exactly_ the same problem with EDIT.  Also happens with FreeDOS.
I'm running SUID root and it still happens (I think it's either an obscure 
permissions problem or a bug).  Strange thing is: if you save to something 
other than the root directory of a dos drive, it works.
Does anyone have a solution?
